If you think about it, this is a completely true fact. Like he has done pretty much everything through his decades of operation. Not only is he probably the most loyal star wars character, he's also lovable and heroic. I liked him so much I nearly cried when he almost died during the death star trench run. Pretty much the most useful too. He combines a mechanic, pilot, hacker etc while having enough AI to think creatively and develop a personality. I mean in the eu, he crashes the Eclipse ii into the galaxy gun, becoming the only star wars character to destroy 2 superweapons at once. R2 is love, R2 is life
I actually saw ESB last night, and, as always, R2 simply stands out. It's easy to be human when you're human. But when R2 does it, its pure humanity. He's brave, loyal and full of emotion. Of course, we all know how he consistently saves the day -TMP = fixing the power source for the shields -AOTC = disabling the foundries to prevent Padme from being toast -ANH = trash compactor -ESB = TWICE (1) opening the door at cloud city so they could escape, not no mention selflessly making the smoke screen; (2) fixing the hyperdrive -ROTJ = Tossing Luke the lightsaber But, we have sheer bravery as well...R2 never backs down, especially if his loved ones need him -ROTS = fighting off the droids on Grevious' ship, as well as making the necessary diversion in the confrontation with the General -ANH = receiving the plans from Leia and then bravely carrying out his quest to find Obi-Wan -ESB = pressing Luke on when shadowing Boba Fett -ROTJ = bravely getting in the middle of the line of fire to try and open the doors at the shield generator But most importantly, it's R2's pure emotion and intensity. We can just hear it through his beeps! -ANH = sound reflecting sorrow when C-3PO lost his arm -ESB = after setting the smoke screen in Cloud City, we can almost hear him beep "wait for me!"; when he looks into Yoda's hut. And on, and on, and on......R2-DS, the most human of the Star Wars characters! -
I agree with all of this. R2 is my favorite. Though, I also give props to Threepio, who was an unarmed protocol droid that stood by his friends on the front lines of a war.
R2 is the ultimate always be there for you kind of friend. R2 is adorable, reliable, adaptable. He says EXACTLY what is on his droid mind. Look at him with C-3PO. R2 has put up with the protocol droids' abuse for decades. How can you not R2-D2?
Was there ever a doubt? R2-D2 and C3-PO are the best droids ever IMHO. Why did I mention Threepio too? Well, it's like mentioning Tom without mentioning Jerry. I love them both, but they're always at their best together.
I'm wary of people who fail to give Artoo the proper accolades. Fortunately, I've not met many of them. R2-D2 is clearly the best little droid-pup in the galaxy. And I agree with enigmaticjedi-- I love Threepio too! He has a more grating personality, perhaps, but he's there to help his friends and allies when they need him. It's even harder for him, it seems, as he has to overcome the more cowardly aspects of his programming to do so.
R2 and 3PO are fabulous characters. They're two important reasons the CT is excellent. If only they could have had bigger roles in the prequel films.
I love the Darths and Droids webcomic's explanation for R2's hyper-competence: He's a min-maxed character whose amazing abilities are only possible thanks to a flaw preventing him from communicating with anything other than beeps or boops.
