From my clueless North European perspective that feels more like a big country (USA) running over a smaller country (Ecuador) that they don't have any respect for than a race question.

Remember that Hispanics and Latin-Americans are also discriminated against. It definitely ties into a race question.

But why is the US in that place of power or treated preferentially? You can say it's because of the US's political position and clout, which is true... But that position comes because of the USA's white imperialist history in places like Latin America and the Caribbean. Hell, our British forebears are the people who brought black people to the Bahamas in the first place as slaves.

So really, that ingrained sense of "people from the USA get special treatment" is itself a legacy of white privilege and power in the first place.

Do you think it would have happened if it was a small, "white" European country she was from?

Similarly, I doubt that old dude would have yelled at that woman in the park in Chicago (Merk posted link on previous page) if she were white and wearing a shirt of a "white" country. I'm sure he wouldn't have repeatedly asked her if she were a citizen.

    And yet again....

White woman calls 911 to report a black 11 year old boy delivering newspapers/

At one point, Uriah got a little mixed up about the brand-new route and accidentally delivered a few papers to the wrong houses.
That's a pretty innocuous mistake—understandable for an 11-year-old kid working the first day of his first job—and neither he nor his mom thought much of it. Sharp just ran back to grab the papers he'd taken to the wrong addresses and redeliver them to the right ones. Unfortunately, a woman in the neighborhood apparently thought that Sharp was acting "suspicious." So instead of doing the normal, neighborly thing of just, you know, going outside to chat with Uriah and his mom to see what was up, the lady dialed 911.

I'm sorry you and your fiancée had that awful experience. But experiences are often how we learn. Statistics are one thing and as a scientist I'm sure you value a lot of that kind of data, but it often does take a personal experience to really bring things home to us. Kudos for having the courage to admit that you were wrong about something. That's really, really hard sometimes.

And I do want to say a couple of things. Because you mention that you haven't converted to the left. And that's absolutely fine. Because racial equality shouldn't be an issue people on the "left" care about. It should be an issue ALL people care about. Right and left absolutely have their clashes, and it's good that you can keep an open mind about things, but things like "white people are treated better than other races" . . . well, that's not a "political" issue in my opinion. Your personal political views can be what they are, but racism should be abhorred by both sides and everyone in between. It often isn't and that's a problem.

Also, if you mean what I think you mean by "white guilt," then don't worry about that. Everybody has different kinds of privilege. I don't have white privilege myself, but I do have male privilege and straight privilege and some other things like that. I don't feel guilty for those things; I didn't choose to be those things, nor to be born into a society which grants privilege based on them. That just happened. I think it is easy to conflate the notions of privilege and guilt. People can get defensive about that. But feel no guilt for being white or having the privilege it does give you. Just recognize it, as you have, and try to make sure you don't fall into perpetuating it and call it out when appropriate. But guilt is, yeah, counterproductive.

I don’t feel guilty about being white any more than I feel guilty about having been in a position to go to college and earn a degree, or earn a middle-class income.

But I do try to use these privileges to help society however I can.

As far as converting to “the left,” the left definitely isn’t a monolith. I’m not familiar enough with politics in the UK to comment, but just on this board we have Americans who are in the center (Clinton supporters during the primary), those who support capitalism after a strong social safety net (me, a few others), and some who align more socialist or communist.

Inb4 someone says Clinton is “center right”...correct, but my point is made.

Quoted, because I cannot "like" this enough, and bolded for emphasis. Being on the political left does not innoculate one from racism.

Well, there are many different factors but mostly historical, economical and geographical reasons to why USA is in that place of power. But I don't feel we have time to go through them all.
I would say that the colonisation of what's now inland USA is more important.
Not that I have anything against blaming the EU-leaving Limeys for everything ( :p) but I will have to point out that the British was just one of many countries that brought Africans to the Americas. Spain, France, Netherlands, Portugal, Denmark and Sweden (and possibly others I don't remembers) all was part of the slave trade.

Also to be fair the British navy was leading when it comes to stopping slave trade after 1807.

Possibly. But at the same time so is Ecuador, like USA a nation of immigrants with people that comes in many shades of skin colour, from dark brown to unbaked-dough (I really finds it interesting that USA seems to classify people as PoC because they talk Spanish).

Now, I cant really say how the flight people was thinking when doing their tactless decision, but I would personally not be that surprised if they did something similar to people from any of the Balkan countries or East European countries that are not EU members.

going by how chauvinistic some people from USA have a tendency to be: yes.

Have her speaking a accent he don't accept as "American" and a flag he don't recognize as from USA* and we could see the same result.
    * which going by the jokes about how badly educated some yankees are and that he did not recognise a flag from USA, could mean a flag from USA.

USA are after all the country that invented "freedom fries" and throw out perfectly fine vine (that you had paid for) just because France did not agree with your decision, among many things.

And in fact, I know many on the left in California for instance who are definitely racist, including people who are pro-capital punishment and "tough on crime" measures.

For one thing, the vast majority of the population of "Latin" America are what would be termed "mixed race"-- usually including Native American blood, and I suspect an even higher proportion of those who come to the United States are mixed or Native (e.g., ethnic Maya face persecution in Mexico and Central America). And "Person of Color" doesn't necessarily refer to skin tone; it's political and cultural, just like entirely non-biological concept of race itself.

I was gonna say... Most of our Spanish-speakers are at least part Native American. That definitely means their ancestors have different backgrounds and they currently have different struggles because of that fact. We're generally not talking about Spaniards here.

[/My soapbox about how California has the nation's largest Native American population]

White people calling the cops for stupid reasons. Can it get any more ignorant?

    Oh yes, it can...

    https://deadspin.com/virginia-man-c...up-b-1827659622/amp?__twitter_impression=true

A man called the police during a pickup basketball game after getting knocked to the floor by a hard pick at the LA Fitness in Sterling, Va. yesterday.

JFC, fellow white people... I don't even know what to say anymore. Personally, I hope the guy gets identified and outed for his complete stupidity. What a *******

Sorry for the late reply, it's been so hot over here that I have been really sluggish.
    I did not say Latin-language speaking, I said Spanish-speaking = Hispanic.

You people* are the one who throw around Hispanic as meaning non-white more or less every time I see/hear it. It also seems to mean a specific type of non-white when you use it, which TMU create problem for Spanish speakers in USA that don’t fit that mold. And it ignores Brazil and the Brazilians, who don’t speak Spanish (this has actually lead to stuff like the Brazilian Marvel character Sunspot using Spanish when he should be using Portuguese. (Not that people speaking the wrong language in pop-culture is unusual, it’s always interesting to see people use Danish letters when making IKEA jokes or giving north British accents to Vikings)).
    * #proboblynotallnorhtamericans :p

Do I understand you right that PoC is just used as another way to say minority and/or not part of the Anglo-American-ish mainstream culture? Great, and here I was thinking that I was beginning to understand your system [face_sigh] Oh well, back to square one then.

Going by some stories I have heard it's a-bit more complicated then than that.
