Ragnarök: Flight of the Aesir

In the Year 2236, an invincible army descended from the heavens, and mankind was no more. What few humans remained, a petty million, where forced to flee to the stars. They fled in the four ships known simply as Höðr, Baldr, Móði and Magni under the leadership of Admiral Yui Anno, in the hope of finding a new home for themselves even in face of the nigh invincible enemy, the Jötnar. This is the tale of this these people abroad humanity?s first and last fleet, the Aesir.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    [image=http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g12/zero107/Battlestar.jpg]

Humans around across the world converged for the launching of the Aesir, a fleet that promises to find humanity a new home, from the Pacific. As Earth?s first Interstellar vessels known equipped with Ascension engines, they are the only ships with faster than light speed travel, and with the failures of terraforming Mars and the moons of Jupiter, they represented man?s only hope of escaping the overcrowded Earth.

The Midgard government, the former nations of America, Korea, Japan, China, India, and England where funders of the project, as they were the only remaining Super Power in the world, and Earth?s 36 Billion Population was hurting them the most.

Because the historic and important nature of the event, 25 high schools randomly chosen from every nation from the Midgard goverment, was selected to see the event first hand on the floating artificial island created to serve as the launching pad for the Aeir?s fleet?s take off.

From the beginning, they should have known something was wrong . Most cell phone connections where severed during the Opening Ceremonies, as the Jötnar descended from the heavens. By the time of some of speeches of the key members of the project, the cities of Chicago in America, Canterbury in England, Fukuoka in Japan, and Beijing in China where nothing but burning rumble. Ten minutes before the launch, all of the nations of Midgard government destroyed , crushed under the mighty boot of Jötnar.

    [image=http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb132/4umTroll/09_C346_israfel-2jump.jpg]

As the Jötnar descended on the floating artificial island, all hope should have been lost and mankind been destroyed. But as they descended from the heavens, revealing their gigantic ice and steel like abstract bodies to the humans, a miracle occurred. A small group of humans refused to give up into hopelessness, as the crowds where attacked, and the courage in their hearts somehow summoned Mecha like devices that would simply be known as the Vanir.

    [image=http://i389.photobucket.com/albums/oo331/caiza26/Machines/625-F-rahxephon_mech.jpg]

Somehow the children where called to the Vanir, and somehow the children piloted them and defeated the small but powerful Jötnar force. Wasting no time, the Aesir fleet launched and broke out of the Earth?s Atmosphere to find Earth?s landmasses ablaze bleow. As Admiral Yui Anno was about to order the fleet to "Ascend", she saw that not only was a new compartment added to each ship on her fleet, but that somehow the Vainir had managed to board their ships their ships. Knowing that the Jötnar would continue to pursue them, she ordered them to protect the Aesir fleet at all costs.

    Influences and Story

This is of course HEAVILY influenced by the Space Opera: Battlestar Galactica 2003 series , and anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, Space Runaway Ideon, Mobile Suit Gundam, GANTZ, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and RahXephon with a touch of Norse mythology. Anyone familiar with the anime series realize towards the end of each of these series, a lot of people die. Including main characters (hint, hint). Don?t be afraid though, this will have a

    Gender: Male

    Age: 18

    Nationality: Japanese

Appearance: Kisho?s looks are about average, with medium length black hair, black-rimmed glasses, and black German-style school uniform. His expression is nearly always distant and aloof. Also, he?s rarely seen without his projection-screen computer.

Personality: Always confidant and focused on logical solutions, Kisho tends to come across as a cold and condescending, which suits him just fine. He?s obsessed with technology, science, math, and chess, and is constantly trying to figure out the latest developments in the former fields, and trying to find a decent opponent in the last.

Background: Born and raised in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan; Watanabe Kisho?s life was primarily influenced by his parents? desire for him to do well in school, his own curiosity, and his grandfather?s old chess-board and projection-screen computer. So he studied like mad, tinkered like mad, and practiced like mad, and in turn he's become a near expert in his fields of devotion. As a result of his prowess, he is attending Japan?s premier preparatory academy with top marks in math and science. He is in his senior year and bored out of his skull.

Having already upgraded the old projection computer to its absolute limit (He calls it his Pocket PC in reference to the popular terminology of centuries past), and having achieved the rank of a chess grandmaster, he?s looking forward to the artificial island? and maybe hacking it. Why not?

    Nationality: German

    Appearance: [image=http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/9692/rise1.jpg]

Personality: Bright and outgoing, she's almost instantly popular amongst many of the people that she meets. Outwardly she is very optimistic, but inwardly she is struggling to find her true self. She feels distant from people due to her idol status, yet also feels close because of it. Largely, she just wants to be a normal high school student.

Background: Born in Berlin, her father and mother both worked for the government. Germany, looking to increase its role in global politics, had several of their officials send their children to countries in the Midgard superpower. At the tender age of twelve, Clara was sent to attend school in Japan. She has always been a popular girl, but in Japan it was different completely. Her foreign status along with her natural beauty instantly made her something of an idol. This was not unnoticed by those in the actual modeling business, who contacted her about a contract. At the age of 14 she began modeling for magazines and other idol outlets. Nothing risque, but she was instantly famous. This interfered with her life as a student, forcing her to become tutored while on the road and severing her ties with her new friends.

At the age of 16, Clara became burnt out of the lifestyle and tried to quit. She couldn't escape it, due to contract, but was allowed to return to school in order to attend High School. Here she was instantly recognized and people expected her to be just like the person she was in the model videos. When she wasn't exactly as they imagined her, many became distant and viewed her as a fraud. Trying to come to grips with her true self, and trying to incorporate both her lives, she longs to return home to her country, her parents, and to just be accepted.

    Name: Valentin Vasilivich Stukov

    Gender: Male

    Age: 18

    Nationality: Russian

Appearance: A tall, sharp-featured young man, Valentin Vasilivich is growing into his body; one day, he will be an imposing, proud figure, the sort of man others look upon as a leader. His eyes are gray and his hair is blonde, an oddity for a Russian, but largely unnoticed by most.

Personality: Valentin Vasilivich is a cautious young man who likes to wait and watch for the best course of action. He has a fiery temper when angered, but it takes a great wrong to rouse this anger. Above all else, he is calm and calculating, but he also carries a subtle, sardonic and self-deprecating sense of humour about his person. The issue is, he's generally too quiet for others to see it.

Background: Born to Vasili Pyotorvich Stukov and Andrea Petrovna, Valentin is the latest of an old Russian family's military heirs. His father was a soldier, his grandfather before him; so too will Valentin be a soldier. It is assumed the Stukov name is from the old German "Von Stukov," but the elders in his family refuse to acknowledge this. They are Russian, were Russian, and will always be Russian. A Stukov defended Stalingrad, a Stukov led the charge into Berlin, always a Stukov. Valentin attempts to look at his past as objectively as possible, but has great difficulty in convincing his family otherwise.

    Gender: Male

    Age: 16

    Nationality: American

    Appearance:[image=http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/xephronus/Denkou.jpg]

Personality: Normally a quiet young man. Adam keeps mostly to himself. Most teenagers his age find him a little strange in that respect. His intense likes of the Japanese culture have led him to be alienated by his peers. Most of the time, Adam can be found alone in a corner, thinking to himself pensively or simply observing others when they don't expect someone is watching them. His clothing is strictly of the American style, however he also sports what appears to be a type of Japanese, old style, "ninja" glove, as he finds them immensely comfortable and stylish to his own liking. This odd mismatch of clothing has furthered any kind of viable friendship between other American children his age.

Background: Adam grew up in a normal enough household. He was loved by his parents and family. Nothing seemed overly spectacular about the young man. He got average grades in all of his education through his life. Nothing out of the ordinary seemed to happen to him. Normal was simply a state of mind to him. He was serene at the best of times, even in tense situations that may have presented themselves to him. When he was 10 years old, Adam grew to love watching television, specifically cartoon anime. His favorite shows were those about Sword-wielding heroes from Japan. The chivalrous figures excited and enticed him to no end. They did this so much, in fact, that it drove a young Adam to beg his parents to allow him to take swordsmanship lessons, even though the nearest Dojo was many miles away. Due to his sudden increased attentiveness to his studies and his sheer will to learn swordsmanship, his parents agreed.

Since then, Adam has been training both at home and in the Dojo, every moment he can. Though he has never had to use his learned martial arts skills, the training alone has made him extremely fit. The Japanese style in which he practices requires him to be very agile on his feet.

His life is rather simple, if only seeming that way to him alone. He works hard at what he wants, and doesn't worry about the rest. While the lack of friends sometimes troubles him, Adam never lets it bother him long enough to cause any really real harm to his emotional state. He sees having friends as a want. But not a necessity. Deep inside of his soul he longs for belonging.

...But that longing is second to his new found swordsman's spirit.

Personality: Ken is rebellious and honorable. He does not strike an opponent when down, but is fearless and does not tolerate disrespect. His pride is raging for the human race and fuels his subtle, yet commanding personality. He's quiet, but when he does speak people tend to listen because he has tremendous charisma. When Ken is around people he is comfortable with, he bleeds his soul to them about how his parents are no longer around, the weight of responsibility, how he does not have any friends, the reasons behind his pride, and his sense of helplessness at times. Most importantly, his fear of being alone forever.

He is the Leader that others want, the leader he has to be, bares the pain quietly and stands up for what is right.

Background: He was born to a complete family, the ideal family: A father, A mother, two daughters, and two sons. His parents were both government workers, his dad was military and his mom was a scientist on the Aesir project. Ken excelled at school, a particular interest in science and technology, and even picked up extra curricular activities like football and karate. This is where he learned strong discipline along with his father's don't take any crap style of parenting. Around the neighborhood, Ken was known to fight bullies and not back down to anyone, but he never went looking for fights, just fighting the battles that came to him. He loved his family, his life, and school and it would all be taken from him.

The day of the launch was not unlike any other besides the trip to see the take off, which he was comfortable seeing as his whole school was there with him. When the attack came and people started being killed, Ken had been on the phone with his parents who were in Chicago with his little brother and one of his sisters. He heard their cries before they died and while he cried, an absolute, angry resolve came over him to save his sister who was with him. That was when the Mecha came.

    Episode I: Exodus part I

    IC:Admiral Yui Anno
    Bifröst,the artificial island city

" A hundred years ago, the world was torn apart by war. The world was split apart, brother against brother, sister against sister, father against daughter, mother against son. They killed each other. Stole from each other. They where almost literally eating each other alive. Basically for humanity during World War III, it was business as usual.

"It is hard for us now, in this day and age, to imagine what it was like back then. To imagine the streets of our home cities being nothing more than rubble, to think that rivers ran with blood, to think of starving children left on the street because, well, their parents couldn't feed all their children because some crack pot dictator decided to 'confiscate' all 'extra' food supplies for his loyal soldiers. It is hard for us imagine people being lined up against a brick wall, awaiting to be shot to death from a firing squad. It is difficult to do so even now because humanity FINALLY decided to put down their weapons, and extend their hands in friendship and love. Mankind had finally been united, under the leadership of Midgard government."

"But there is nothing to celebrate yet. Children still starve, humans still steal from each other, people still kill each other out of spite and in many cases to simply survive. That was something Japan wasn't able to fix when it handed the crushing blow to the American-Chinese forces in War World III. It wasn't something America was able to do when it defeated Japanese and German Nazi forces in World War II, and to be frank it didn't stop when Cesar crushed Pompey for control of Rome thousands of years before that. For a the longest time, even with most of Man united under one flag, it seemed we would be following this route once again, even with all of us deciding to place our arms on the ground, and deciding to head into the future together in peace. The world proclaimed to us 'Yes, you want peace from each other and shall receive it, but you shall receive none from us. It is your lot. Some wanted to give in and say, at least we have some peace and that is all that matters. But some including myself said otherwise. We said we will not let others go into the night without a fight. Our only foe left was our lack of creativity, and after all but defeating the enemies called Hate, of Bigotry, and of Fear, we knew we could win. If they couldn't stop us, we wouldn't let a little thing like that stop us. And here is the fruit of that labor.

"Welcome to what will be called in time, the new beacon of hope for mankind. Welcome to the future to the mankind. Welcome to what will one day will take mankind to their new homes. Welcome to the launching of Aesir Fleet." The tall Japanese women with blue hair, Admiral Yui Anno, proclaimed pointing at the four extremely large vessels behind her. The building exploded with applause.

It was amazing to know a such young women rose to such high position of power. She was 29, yet she had reached one of the highest ranks available in the Midgard government. It was amazing that women called " The World's Greatest Mind" looked more like a super model than say Einstein, what most had imagined geniuses to look like. The black and white uniform on her body was covered in various medals of distinction, making her almost glow from where everyone stood in the audience due to the lights. She stood in the middle of the large auditorium, like a beacon of light herself, and with the fleet in back of her, it would almost make it possible to confuse her with an angel.

Everyone in the building knew the significance of this event. All of Earth's resources, expect water, wood, and food, where gone. All of Earth's mining operations where on the moons of Jupiter and Mars. With the Terraforming projects having failed on them, it was only a matter of time before the resources needed on Earth exceeded that could be acquired on Mars and the moons

    Bifröst, the Artificial Island City

Kisho couldn't help but sigh in mild frustration. Here he was, aboard one of the most remarkable scientific developments in recent history, bristling with all sorts of technological innovations... And he was stuck on a stage, in plain view, completely unable to take a gander at the programming. After all, people tended to notice when you messed around with a holographic projector when you were only surrounded by a handful of westerners.

He looked over the four ships, taking note of their size and how it compared to the blueprints he had... found... previously. It seemed as if a few changes had been made. Changes he couldn't look into because he was stuck on this stage. Given the statistically insignificant odds of him actually winning that moronic lottery, this was the one variable he hadn't accounted for. Now he knew how that Korean fellow had felt just last week when Kisho had mated him in six moves.

Turning his attention back to the podium, he took a mental evaluation of the Admiral. An attractive woman, if her attitude was a bit pretentious. Probably the type who would overemphasize a queen at the expense of her pawns and knights, but that was just based on her speech.

Still no inquiries coming from his companions. Very well, then, if they weren't going to ask...

"If you don't mind, Ms. Admiral, I have something of a multipronged question: I'm presuming these ships have a sort of inertial dampener in order to account for the sheer force of high speed turns. What system have you decided to go with, what sort of scale is the reduction coefficient on, what kind of security systems are in place to ensure its safety, and approximately how long is the reaction time between the initial turn signal and the system's activation?" His question finished, he pushed his glasses back up the bridge of his nose.

" You've done your Homework young man." Yui offered a smile to the young man and gave a salute "But I'm afraid I can't answer the latter two questions. Anything dealing with any security systems on the ships is classified. Not that I believe you to be a terrorists of any sort, but we can never let a sliver of how any security system runs, encase it got in the hands of one." Yui said dryly "But I can answer the first two."

" The system we are using is the one that Newton himself would have loved. Using the simple effects of motion in the universe for our own advantage. Inside 40 points on the ship are what I like to call "Gravity Wells". By fooling the universe around us through the clever spread of small amounts of protons and the building blocks of matter, we make them think area around that one point is heavier than Jupiter. We activate the points in the opposite direction we're going, and with the force and pressure resist shells around the ship point area, let it hold take the resulting force and pressure smoothly, while pulling the ship away from the direction it was heading, and towards a new possibly. It would take a black hole to force open an Aseir ship.

"As for your second question 8.4 x 10^173 Einsteins. Though at less then one hundredth of that amount, we can no longer turn while moving, because when enter light speed mode, it simply gets to hard to do something we don't need. We can stop at those speeds but that is it, that is the extent of what we can do at that point."

    Bifröst, the Artificial Island City

Well... I'm not exactly the most capable representative of the school.... Most of them are probably laughing at me right now anyway... Not that it matters in any sense but still.. Why was I picked to ask a question about something that I have no questions about?

Adam sat up on stage with this Admiral person and the other lucky "lottery winners." His attention had drifted away from the Admiral's speech and his mind began going over some of the stances and moves for his swordsmanship training. Along with that, his eyes found certain objects of fascination. Such as the engines of the huge ships of the Aesir fleet. The sleek design of the ships themselves. Little things that caught his eye.

His mind was cunning and creative. Adam wasn't the thickest book on the shelf, but his mind was a bit complex in it's own way. He didn't really puzzle things out so much as he just observed many things at once without realizing how hard that was to other people. To this effect, he noticed that the Admiral woman was rather pretty. She was young as well. Perhaps a bit overzealous in her ideals but then, someone in her position probably had to be.

Adam had never taken a liking to politics. They were too complex. Too many people in suits fighting with words in a fake arena that no one could see. Adam himself preferred the old fashioned way. Two combatants with swords drawn. Only the most skilled would come out on top. But... these were simply the fantasies of a young man. Things simply were not done that way anymore. No battles of note took use of swords. Or honor for that matter. That bothered Adam Knight for some reason. He couldn't really ever place as to why but it was occasionally on his mind. Like most things, it never stayed in his attention span for very long though.

The Admiral finished her speech and introduced the Lottery winners. Adam really had nothing to ask so he sat quietly. Not embarrassed in the least. He had no school pride whatsoever. It was simply a place in which he learned things. People there didn't really like him. And he didn't particularly like them back either. It was no failing on anyone's part that he got chosen for such an event like today. Simply bad luck for his school for allowing someone who didn't seem overly concerned with anything to represent them to the world. He would have assumed, personally that once his name had come up. Whomever had drawn it, would have thrown it out and drawn another. Apparently he gave his school leaders too much credit.

Adam Knight watched as the first of the teenagers got up to ask a question. It was the boy from Japan. This interested Adam for all of three seconds. It became dreadfully apparent that the boy standing at the microphone was what most people referred to as an "egg head." It didn't bother Adam in the least, except that his notion of the old Samurai code, did not necessarily get carried with a person just because they were from the same country. Because of his dissapointment, Adam simply returned to observing things, his ears listened to the boy with glasses as his eyes scanned random objects around him.

Ken went kind of wide eyed at the first kid's questions. He was smart, but not that smart. It had taken him a moment or two before he had even remembered what inertia was.

Ken stepped forward, bowing, and slid his hands in his purple pants. This was a really big deal, so maybe he should start off with that to ease the distress. "Hi, Admiral. Thanks for giving us this chance. My question is: How far are you willing to go to find Earth-2? How long can the people survive on the ships?"

Those questions seemed simple enough. Yeah, Ken, you had done a find job.

Kisho nodded understandingly. It figured the security system would be classified (the government types were always trying to do that), but it seemed his sources had been correct about the inertial dampening techniques that were being employed, if not the numbers themselves.

8.4x10^173 Einsteins was a lot of stopping power... That put the ships at well over 1000 metric tons apiece, based on a quick order of magnitude equation. The actual figure was probably closer to 1500, but that would have to wait. For now, he had to sit through the others' more mundane questions. Like this one, about life support systems. Kisho figured the leaked designs had probably gotten this figure right, so he decided to run through some mental chess games in his head.

Unlike Kasparov, he noted, he almost always figured out how to beat Deep Blue Mark II.

Yui flashed a wide smile. The first question hadn't been hard. But it wasn't the type that made it to the frontline of the newspaper, just the back of the techinal acticles. This was the one people wanted to know. What their taxpayer dollars would do for them, not how they'd do it.

"Ah! I know a question like this would pop up, sooner or later. The ship can take a twelve year journey with its current supplies, not taking into account the farming supplies on the ship. However it should only take us four years to get Earth-2 , or as I like to personally call by its original name Valhalla. However we have four years of extra supplies incase anything goes wrong, or if the trajectory is slightly off and we need to do a wee bit of searching for it. Worst come to worst after six years, the fleet can return to Earth." Yui said, snapping her fingers.

"But you can be assured that the trajectory isn?t wrong, Midgard's best astrologists charted the course, backed up by the best mathematicians. No expense was spared or event unprepared for this voyage.? Yui said with a note of pride in her voice as she spoke. ?Any more questions??

If there was one thing Clara knew how to do, it was maintain a public appearance. It seemed like her whole life had been leading up to this type of moment. The moment where she could be on stage and in front of the entire world. Sure, there were others on stage, but she was positive it was her presence that would demand the most attention. In a way, that's why she was shaking and nervous on the inside.

She didn't want to be here. She wished she could be back in Germany with her parents, away from spotlights like this assembly. Looking around during the initial presentation she noticed that some of the other students were busy admiring the ships, or looking extremely bored. She wasn't afforded that luxury, even though she wanted to ask questions that would interest her about the ship, she knew she would have to put on her act. Feeling her eyes start to wander, she immediately returned her attention forward and began to smile at the crowd. She was theirs, after all. The public.

As the Admiral, who Clara had instantly respected, finished with the introductions Clara was reminded of what had happened. There were far better students at her high school than herself to ask these questions. While she did have great grades and was more intelligent than her idol personality portrayed, she knew she wouldn't be able to show it. But she had been chosen because she's an idol, or a former idol, she didn't know anymore. Listening to the first student ask a question, she found it somewhat difficult to follow but had understood a fair amount of it. The reply from the admiral seemed to fit the student's expectations and while Clara hadn't fully understood the entire complexity of the information, it still seemed quite daunting.

The next student asked a question that was no surprise to anyone. Of course she wanted to know how long this fleet would be searching for a new home, and what contingencies they had in place for any trouble. The answer was quite interesting. Twelve years was quite a long time for people to be in space without a true home. Hopefully they would find this "Valhalla" within the four years that was predicted.

With those questions finished, Clara decided she might as well get this whole ordeal over with. Stepping forward with her own question, she began by addressing the audience with a smile, wink, and her trademark gesture. The gesture was a twirl of the hand that she brought to her face and worked with the wink and nod to her fans. "Hello everyone! Your Carmella-chan is here!" she said, her voice loud yet modest at the same time. She gave her voice more of a higher pitch than she normally spoke with as well. She was in full "Carmella-chan, the idol" mode. "This place sure is amazing, isn't it?" she asked, again addressing the audience. Somewhere in the crowd a few cameras could be seen shooting pictures as she brushed back her dark red hair and feigned astonishment at the scene. "I don't know if I can really provide that interesting a question, but Carmella-chan's going to give it her best shot! Root for me, everyone!" she finished addressing the crowd, once again giving her signature gesture.

Turning to the Admiral, she asked, "You said that the mission would take a least four years, I would like to know what kind of ship to ship communication and travel would be permissable during the trip? Would people be allowed to freely visit other parts of the fleet during the travel or would they be confined to just their one ship?" This was a question that would be fitting of someone in the public spotlight, always thinking about her 'fans'.

    Valentin Vasilivich Stukov
    Bifröst

All through the prep and pomp, Valentin Vasilivich was continually addressed as Valentine. This bothered him, understandably, for it wasn't his name, but he was used to it by now. The patronymic threw most people, and the nicknames of Valya, Lenti, and Val confused some others, but, as often happens with foreign names, one gets accustomed to it. The Japanese boy asked a question that amounted to a basic understanding of inertia, which amazingly enough threw off the American. The other boy was quiet, and that at least redeemed him for being a part of this big myth they were making. The lone female among their small group happened to be a complete fool for all outward appearances. He couldn't say this directly, but it certainly seemed like it'd be worth saying...

Wasn't she German? Why the whole faux-Japanese facade? His great-grandfather, dead for three years now, would've said that they'd changed a lot since Stalingrad. Valentin had always thought it incredibly foolish of his great-grandfather to bring up a battle he hadn't even been born for.

But of course, Valentin was a Stukov! Son of Vasili Pyotorvich! There'd been many other Stukovs with his name; grandparents told him to "bring pride to the name," that he should be proud of it.

Well...he didn't feel like a great hero right now. He didn't much like being made into a myth.

    IC: Admiral Yui Anno
    Bifröst, the Artificial Island City

Yui looked around at the audience, and for a long moment wondered what was with the burst of applause. As Yui looked over to the aide the Midgrad government sent, looking for any type of answer, as he tried to whisper she was considered a star through out much of Earth. Yui sighed, as she covered her face with her hands. This was the price she payed for living on a shipyard orbiting Mars.

That didn't matter, the girl's question did.

"Travel between the ships will be allowed only when we stop, and reposition our selves. Once again, once we point the ships in a direction and use light speed it is hard to do anything but stop them, let alone allow complex traffic patterns in between ships. Once a month we will stop for a week, so that people can intermingle with each other, no matter what. These might be big ships, but I'll be damned if cabin fever sets in. Communications between ships will be unlimited however. Ascension tech, began on a telecommunications level after all. Any other questions?" Yui said with a small smile on her face.
