Nidrail, your doll is beautiful!!! That is one lucky Barbie!
I just finished dying the front and back drapes for the dress. I didn't let the fact that I had no rubber gloves stop me, but it may take a few days for the blue dye to fade from my nails...
I'm happy with the results, the dyes took well and faded nicely into each other. The dress gets dipped in a few days. I made a test sleeve out of spandex, and I like the fit. I'm not sure what to do about attaching the sleeves to the drapes. Should I attach them to the edges of the sleeves then sew the edges together , or should I complete the sleeves then attach the drapes? What would be a cleaner, less poofy look? Oh, great, now my stomach hurts........[face_worried]

    Thanks, Luminous!

Well, I made the sleeve first (for my doll), and I left the seam on the Outside, and then sewed the sleeve halves together and then sewed them onto the sleeve seam, if that makes sense. So you can kinda see how that might look. Again I've only done it for a doll so I don't know all the ins and outs... wish I did though! Goodluck!!

Thanks for the tip about the sleeves...I am finding the trickiest part to be dying the satin trim to match the different dyes on the back train. Satin blanket binding doesn't take the dye that well, and I've had to leave it in for about an hour for each color. Are there any other dye products aside from RIT that would work well with the trim (I think it's polyester satin)?
Now would be a great time to own a dressform...I'm basically eyeballing where everything goes and pinning it then trying it on to see if it is right. I want to get this thing done for D*C, I have finals and comps in one week (my main priority and torture), school's starting next week and I think I'm gonna go nuts before then. Whoa, sorry...just needed to vent a little.[face_hypnotized]

Very cool! Wouldn't it be great to get a Padme group photo? We probably won't get to Atlanta until Friday evening (can't take the day off), so I'll wear the rainbow dress Saturday. Probably. Still kinda early to tell. I am working on it right now, so hopefully I'll have most of it finished by tonight (crossing fingers).

Well I want to wear my lake dress for the SW costume contest, so I'll wear it whatever day that will be. But we should get a photo or something, that would be cool! Good luck on the dress!!

FYI, the Star Wars contest is on Saturday; I believe you need to be down in the Ballroom by 4pm to enter (but be sure to check ahead with the organizers!). There is a thread in the Conventions list for the MotF track; here's a link to it: http://boards.theforce.net/fanforce_conventions/b10290/23167675/p1/?22

:) Good luck! I'm not entering but I always catch the contest.

Well I just finished my 4th version of this dress... LOL I wore it at Comic Con this past weekend.
There's a couple of things I want to tweak - mainly the fit of the underdress. Possibly adding the satin edging at some point. I left it off this time because I don't particularly care for it - but I may add it on in the future. I want to get different shoes as these kill my feet, and my boyfriend wants to make a new necklace...
The only thing I was disappointed in was the silk I used for the outer layer wrinkles like mad!! It was fine in the morning but after sitting during the RL breakfast, the back got all wrinkly again. Ah well!

dunno if I'll take it to dragoncon or not - not sure if I'll have room in the car what with all the stuff we're taking! LOL

Your costume looked great at the RL photo shoot this weekend. I wish I had had time to take a closer look at your necklace and some of the other details - but I'm amazed by the entire drape and flow of your design as well as the smooth transitions between your pastel rainbow colors. Great job! I hope you have room to bring it to D*Con too :)

Kellilla: your costume is beautiful!! I wish tha I could alter mine so that mine draped further down in the back like yours. I hope to see your at DragonCon!

Thanx CrimsonVision for the note. Well, LuminoisBeing, I guess I'm wearing mine Saturday. We should definately get a Lake Dress pic!

Saturday it is!! We'll totally have to get some pics, Tally!
I just finished adjusting the sleeves (for the millionth time)and hopefully I'll finish the underdress within a couple of weeks. I'm really exited about finishing up, 'cause I've been working in it for about a year (on and off).
The costume contest sounds like fun! I thought about it myself and my husband says go for it, but I'm no pro. I don't know, maybe I'll do it...there tons of fun to watch, I bet it's a mad rush to actually participate! This would be my first live costume contest...very nervous, but in a good way. Either way, I'll be there cheering you on!
Kellilla, your dress is gorgeous! I love your necklace. And your hair! How'd you do them?

Thanks guys! :) I'm gonna try to bring it to dcon, I'll try to wear it on saturday too!
My hairpiece is just loose hair glued to each of the headbands... it ties on, and then needs multiple bobbie pins to keep it in place! My necklace is styrene... I love it but my boyfriend wants to make another version using shell... I can't argue with that LOL

Kel- can't wait to see version 4.0 at dcon. I wish I had not sold mine! Your boyfriend is spoiling you...he told me he wanted to make one out of shell when I was complaining about my sintra attempt for another friend sof ours. I can't wait to see it on you when he does!
I tell you, if you ever want to part with a costume... :)

I'd love to make a necklace using shell!! I don't know where I could find mother of pearl large enough (or at a price that I could afford), but I was thinking about doing a mosaic using tiny bits fit together tightly. The hair idea is awesome! I ended up buying a long wig, cutting the hair off, seing it into a band and attaching the band to the first headband. Only problem is keeping the rest of the hair twisted enough to stay in place while maneuvering it onto my head. Glueing the hair to all the bands may just do the trick...great tip! I am so exited to see everyone's work now!:)

HEy soudns like fum for the pic! Kellilla, you should join in too. A lake dress photo, yay!!

This will be my first costume contest as well, so I'm a bit nervous, but only because I have no idea what's going on!

For the hair, I was gonna buy some fake hair and glue it to some panty hose that's sewde into a cone shape. I'm gonna fill the hose with different sized styrpfoam balls and a wire down the middle to bend it into shape. I have no idea if it will work or not!

Kellilla: can you pm me a more detailed version of how you did your hair? I might just try your version if mine doesn't work.

Hey, Kellilla, I just finished the hair, and your idea rocks!!! I removed all those little black wires holding the frame in place (they were on the outside and visible)and glued the hair directly to the headbands. After about 50 bobby pins to keep it on my head, it looks 100% better!!!
I never would have thought of using pantyhose, TAlly...that's a good idea for keeping those flyaways in place (I had to cut a lot of little hairs that escaped the glue, burning my fingers in the process). Let us know how it works..the pantyhose could work for other styles as well...hmmmmm... After all this, we should have degrees in hair engineering! LOL!

Hey, you can use McCall's 3933 or McCall's 3222. Both are discontinued, but you can probably find them on ebay or something.

I also know that someone used McCall's 3057.

    Hope that helps!

I used McCall's 3222, and found it on Ebay. It's a pretty easy pattern to follow, with some minor alterations.:)

My cousin recently passed down a bag of shoes from her proms and semis, etc. We're different sizes, so I only found about 2 pairs that fit me, and among them were these:

They're silver satin pumps, closed and rounded toe with a wedge heel no less than 2" [o_O] Do you think that these could work as shoes for this dress? I remember reading that the costume in the movie had silver shoes...

[Althought I might have to make the dress a bit longer to compensate! I'm 5'7.5" and with those heels...!]
