In most common vernacular, the Middle East starts with Egypt in the west and ends with Iran in the east. It's a pretty diffuse and random designation anyhow. Turkey is included, but also included into Europe, depending on context and convenience. And Turkey is included, but almost neighbouring Azerbaijan, fellow Turkish-speaking nation, is not. Lately, people have taken to including Afghanistan as well, since the Middle East is wherever America wages wars.

 

I voted Lebanon, at one time considered a gem of the mediterranean.

I'd say the middle east traditionally starts with Turkey and ends with Indonesia. But in recent years has expanded from France to Sydney, with pockets of Middle East in some neighborhoods in London and New York City. That is, if we're trying to gauge where the Islams are. That's what we're doing, right?
