Saga Rank the Star Wars films, TPM to Rogue One (Locked- Use New Thread)

After viewing Rogue One, twice, I must say that TFA went down in my ranking since Rogue One was certainly more imaginative and ambitious than TFA. Here's my new ranking. Please take note that it may change again since I haven't watched any of the other Star Wars movies, from TPM to TFA, since last year. So this is a "temporary" ranking. And I think that, after another viewing of all the SW movies, perhaps before the release of Episode VIII, TFA will really go down in my next ranking, even below AOTC or ROTJ :

There's only the merest sliver between the top 4, then comes Jedi and then the other three could be in any order. I love them all though - it's like 99% to 95% top to bottom.

I actually like all of the Star Wars movies fine so even the last two I enjoy greatly, I just like the others more.

With Rogue One and Force Awakens I'm not a 100% which one I would put first I love them both pretty equally. I think I probably have to watch them both a few more times to know for sure which one would be number one. I mostly put Rogue One first because that was the movie that really made me want to get more involve with the Star Wars franchise and since then I re-watched the old movies and started watching The Clone Wars.

 

My rankings have stayed pretty consistent over the years, even including the two newer films. I guess my list would go:

After putting more thought into it than a person should, perhaps...

To me Rogue One is just not as deep as the others, yet I feel it is a better assembled film than II and III.

Huh, much as I thought I couldn't care less about yet another ranking list, it does force the issue about how to consider Rogue One in terms of the cinematic SW collection (not 'Saga' - I think it's appropriate to reserve the term for the episodic entries). Also a good oportunity to reconsider previous opinions.

Hmm...

I'll be interested in a year or two to see how Ep VIII shakes that order up, plus the Han Solo film. It's not entirely about which individual film is 'better', in some cases it's how they relate to each other. TFA could get bumped down if Ep VIII turns out to be an utter turkey.

And yeah, I ranked Rogue One lower than TPM, despite being more impressed with R1 on my first viewing than I was with TPM. Over time, I've come to appreciate TPM for its many merits, rather than the flaws which turned people off straight away. Rogue One is what it is, I can't see it improving through context. Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent film, and better than I was expecting. There's just something about each film in the PT which I love for their true connections to the OT, and it's not all about the plot or characters. Even AOTC - the current bottom of the barrel - has closer ties to Star Wars for me than I expect many of the future films to achieve. TFA managed beautifully, but sadly, I expect that connection to dissipate over time.

I totally get that. I like TFA for instance but I like the Clone Wars movie even more - it helped reinvigorate my Star Wars fandom so there is a lot of good feelings there for me

 

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back(100) - One of the best movies of all time, superior character development, sweeping and epic plot, and special effects ahead of its time
Star Wars: A New Hope(99) - Set the standard for Star Wars, and all franchises to come.
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith(94) - Underrated, unexpected moments even though we know the ultimate outcome.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens(92) - Slightly overrated, some repetitive plot concepts, but still a great movie from a great director.
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi(85) - Not as good as ANH and TESB, but still very rewatchable, and the ending is better than acts I and II.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story(83) - Classic star wars, but lack of continuation makes it difficult to fully appreciate.
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones(80) - Definately undderrated, takes on a difficult subject matter and mostly succeeds.
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace(72) - Probably the low point in the series, although it is intended for a younger audience.
