Amph Ready Player One- book and film discussion thread

I read this via TOR and found it to be perfect

 

I wish I had some nerd friends that wanted to see this so I could ask them what all the references are throughout the whole movie.

 

I will see it with you. I can probably only get half the references, but that's probably enough.

 

Jeez you people are already making me feel old.

 

It's more amount of exposure than age, at least in my case.

 

I thought, as SW fans, we're all in the "nerds" category. Could've fooled me.

 

But there are levels, like in anything else. For example, for the video games in the book, I don't think I'd played many if any, and some I hadn't heard of.

 

Well I never played joust, but for references like those I just read through as if they were made up for the purpose of the story.

 

RP1 is sitting at 80% RT now with 50 mostly mildly positive reviews. I don't see much fervent praise for the film among the early reviews. There's reserved admiration for the visual style and pacing. No one seems to be expecting another Jurassic Park level success.

 

I am actually surprised how well the reviews have gone so far. It seems like the type of movie that most critics would hate for a whole slew of reasons even with Steven in the directors chair.

 

What is wrong with 80% RT? I know it's early, but wouldn't that be considered, "certified fresh" by RT standards? Jeez, it's not like we're talking about that Charlie Sheen "9/11" elevator movie that came out last year.

 

80% doesn't reflect the "strength" of the positive reviews, which seem a bit tepid. Its Metacritic score is 64.

 

Metacritic is better, and it's at 64%. Not bad, especially considering the dire source material.

Did Metacritic consider its score based on the reviews of RPO in the JCF?

 

probably not, but it is based on *gasp* opinions.

Just an FYI, there were well over 16K reviews posted on Amazon for the novel, and 90% of them gave it 4 stars or better. Yes, they are all "opinions" as well.

 

maybe you're not getting it. we mostly try to discuss our own opinions, not the opinions of "the masses", which are irrelevant and normally wrong. i mean we live in a world where donald trump is president and transformers: dark of the moon made over a billion dollars, so your appeal to 16k amazon reviews isn't carrying a lot of weight.

 

Ok, I'll apologize now for posting about the RT and Metacric reviews. I've learned my lesson.
