Qui-Gon was killed by Maul, Anakin and Obi-Wan got trashed by Dooku several times, Padme got slashed by the nexu, Mace got fried by Palpatine after losing his hand to Anakin, Anakin got bar-b-cued but nothing from the Battle Droids.
I hear the crap given to stormtroopers but were the battle droids that much better?

Lucas even said in 77 that it was absurd that the Stormtroopers weren't able to kill any of the good guys, but he still went with it.

the proof that stormtroopers suck even in ANH is at the battle in the Tantive IV, they couldn't even hit 3PO while he was crossing the corridor (at his slow speed).[face_laugh][face_laugh][face_laugh]

I'm pretty sure they weren't trying to... they were shooting past the droids at the rebel troopers. Who, by the way, the stormtroopers in that scene handled pretty easily.

even if you weren't trying to, how can anybody miss 3PO at his speed getting in your vision of fire.
R2 give his small height is understandable but not 3PO.;)

Droids are valuable and a potential source of intelligence. Why shoot them when you don't think they can escape? Leave them until you've finished with the enemy, then round them up when you've got time (as we see them do in the aftermath). I thought it showed impressive fire discipline to not hit a droid wandering across the corridor.

Sorry, but that doesn't make sense. Because they weren't aiming for him and they didn't hit him, they're bad shots? His not getting shot just equates to luck on his part, not lack of skills on their part.

I knew someone would post that. So the Force protected C-3PO. :p Let's try to steer this back to being more about Rebels, though.

Just watched Rebels episode 4 again. One thing I noticed about Kanan is that he has amazingly strong force powers, while at the same time he has rather rudimentary lightsaber skills. I put this down to him having to keep the fact he's a Jedi on the down low. I'd speculate that his training was cut short, and most of his skill comes from gut feeling. This is probably why he gives such crappy lessons to Ezra during quiet periods. I'd imagine Ezra is going to learn more about his powers while on missions. On the job training so to speak.

would it be mean to say I think ahsoka has better skills than kanan? He been in hiding for a long time but even obi wan wasn't completely rusty when he went up against Vader.

No, Ahsoka was well trained. Kanan, as far as we know, was pretty early into training.

I think it's implied he was just assigned to a Master before Order 66.

There was no resistance on a grand scale until Yavin 4, which is why the war only lasted four years. Before then, there was no united front which is what we're seeing in "Rebels". Just small pockets of resistance.

Vader had bigger fish to fry. He had other matters that were more pressing than killing some no nothing Padawan. Now, if it was Quinlan Vos, then he'd get involved. The Inquisitor was recruited to handle affairs that he couldn't handle, or didn't have the time to. Just as in the old EU where Vader had Hethrir as his Procurator of Justice.

I said that's how it was in the Old EU and how it is here. There was Master Kota in "The Force Unleashed" and Kanan Jarrus in "Rebels".

And that has happened. The Jedi are all but extinct. Those that are left have gone on the run like Obi-wan and Yoda. The Alliance hasn't even formed yet. There's just a small group of resistance fighters. We're also in the first season of the show, not five years later when the Alliance has achieved its first decisive victory by stealing the Death Star plans. As to what happened in TESB, that's eight years down the line. And even then, it wasn't that dark in TESB until the end of the film. At the start, the Alliance is still doing pretty well despite having to move to planet to planet.

That's in the novelization which is still canon.

Technical shortcomings had nothing to do with it. A firefight would be the same as what was done on ANH and that had less money. The fact is that the Snowtroopers were only for show.

We did see the Jedi Purge. It was in ROTS. Anything else will happen in the books and comics from the Story Group, and maybe the spin off films. The point of "Rebels" is to show what other people who had very little ties to the main story, did during the years leading into the Galactic Civil War. That was the intent from day one when Filoni and company developed the show.

That's a BS excuse. The fact is the Empire was beaten by a bunch of nobodies who all banded together after a few years. The same way the Viet Cong totally kicked the asses of the United States.

Hate to tell you, but that's not happening. The PT will carry over into this show, into the ST and the spinoffs. And the new EU is canon now. Meaning that the Inquisitor exists and did Vader's bidding when he was too busy doing Palpatine's bidding.

Ahsoka had her Temple training at the start of the film and then by the time she quit the Jedi Order, she had been actively using her skills for about a year and a half. Kanan had his Temple training and was just starting to work in the field when Order 66 was issued. He hasn't had to rely on his Jedi training since he's trying to hide himself. Obi-wan had thirty eight years worth of training and anything that he might have possibly done during the time between trilogies.

Why people expect your average soldier -- and that's what most stormtroopers are -- to be good shots is beyond me. The Empire seems more interested in quantity over quality; they have a huge territory to govern and they're expansionist. This means they have to recruit members not for their inherent talent as soldiers, but simply to fill a suit. Training would improve some of these recruits, but not all, or even most. As we've seen from our own military in the past when people were drafted or standards were low, many soldiers lacked education and didn't even want to be there. And since the Empire is run by cruel zealots, the ones promoted aren't necessarily the bravest, smartest, or most talented -- they're the ones most willing to commit easy atrocities. Add to all this the fact that when one is being shot at, aiming becomes much more difficult.

Although people think the stormtroopers should be better shots, it's actually more realistic they aren't. It's only film and TV that give people the impression that soldiers are always expert marksmen.

So the stormtroopers are simultaneously a satire of totalitarian armies and a realistic representation.

If they were better shots, there wouldn't be anyone left to root for. They'd all be dead.

S.L.A. Marshall conducted a number of studies on combat performance in world war II. Many of his conclusions are still controversial but one of the conclusions that has been proven to be largely true (except for really well drilled troops) is that only around 2% of combatants will aim their fire, most don't aim, and some will even intentionally miss their targets. As a result 98% of combat casualties are inflicted by 2% of combatants.

In Star Wars and most works of fiction, that 2% is represented as the group of heroes and the 98% is the unnamed mooks and red-shirts. It's perfectly acceptable for Stormtroopers to miss the vast majority of the time. It seems unrealistic to us, but in truth it's actually accurate to the way warfare tends to go.

I forget who wrote the article, but there was a theory floating around as to why the stormies were such "bad shots," and that is because of this reason:

    They were shooting at people.

In the opening scene of ANH and during the Battle of Hoth, the Stormtroopers were kicking butt and taking names. They were deadly accurate and did their job like a well oiled machine. Why? Because they were fighting UNIFORMED rebels. When fighting army vs. army, it takes the humanity out of the equation.

The times we see them missing at every opportunity is basically when they're firing on our heroes, and they were wearing civilian clothing every time.

Its much harder to open fire on a civilian than a soldier.

True. But some people want extra characters inserted into scenes simply so the stormtroopers can kill someone. They want to be able to be afraid of the stormtroopers and believe they're dangerous.

I understand fans wanting this, but notice they're presupposing the stormtroopers are meant to be feared at an intense degree. Maybe not?
