Yes, they were, unfortunately. Like many, though, I'd have preferred them to hang it up with Automatic for the People. Never cared for Monster, most of what came after seemed like someone else ripping off their classic stuff.
Still, though, quite possibly the most influential rock band of their era, and one of my favorites. Time to listen to So. Central Rain and Sitting Still, my two favorite songs of theirs.

i beg to differ as monster was done by their tribute/cover band. it was way too mainstream to be a true rem album.
24 hours later, REM still are split up.
But he's now cheating on it with a dolphin.
and oh yeah, did they break up a couple years ago?

Yeah, I thought they broke up back in 1997. Besides, they haven't done anything of
worth since their SCARY MONSTERS album.
Oh, wait. That was Bowie....
Did Kenneth ever divulge what the ****ing frequency was?
Lenny Bruce is not afraid....
Well, I guess it's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of REM as we know it, and I feel fine.
It probably started with an earthquake.
Have they reformed yet?
I liked that song of theirs that went like "Jeremy spoke in claaaass todaaaaaaay wheewheewheewheeee".
They were still around?
DAN spitting up!
If the move doesn't go well, it WILL be the end of the world as we know it.
Or at least the forums. But they ARE the world as we know it.
