Chapter 4

Schurke awoke in a cold shivering sweat, and automatically reached for the vial of pills next to his bedside. He looked at them bleary eyed.

They were the wrong ones.

Groaning, he reached underneath his pallet and reached for a second container. Then a third.

There you are, you little hive rats, he grumbled, picking out one, and then a second for good measure.

Three weeks ago, the nightmares had started and once again he had turned to Sesso. Again, Sesso had come through for him, and again she had cautioned him to be discreet.

And he had.

But?

He had fallen behind in his work.

There?s nothing wrong?

Madam Nu had chastised him for placing Master Yoda?s name on the registry of the lost.

I can handle this?

Four times.

Things are just fine?

?Padawan Canaille,? the nononsense voice snapped him to attention. ?Unless you have mastered a new use of the Force, I doubt that you can read and transcribe the reports with your eyes closed and your head on the keyboards!?

?Madam Nu?? Schurke replied innocently.

Frack!

?I think you should return to your quarters, Padawan Canaille,? the Jedi Master told him icily. ?Or perhaps to the Healer?s Ward, as your quarters seem to be a source of distraction.?


?Yes Madam Nu,? Schurke replied with what he hoped was the proper amount of deference. Old hawk-bat.

Jocosta Nu arched her eyebrow as if she could actually hear his thoughts, and Schurke colored, expecting another rebuke. Instead, to his surprise, she softened.

?Padawan Canaille,? she said almost gently. ?Return to the Healer?s ward and don?t come back until you are well.?

Relieved, Schurke bowed as low as he was able without falling over, then quickly hurried down the darkened hallway.

Yes, to the Healer?s ward yet again, thought Schurke bitterly. With Sesso off to the Outer Rim, he would be at the mercy of whomever the Council had (shoehorned?) in. The Healer in charge would ask a few questions, hum and haw a little, and then present him with what he needed.

He could handle this.

The Healer who eventually came to Schurke's bedside was a younger Padawan, perhaps only recently assigned to his Master; however, he still carried the authority of the Healer's status...

?I'm sorry Master Canaille,? he said quietly, a hint of the exhaustion that was so evident on his features creeping into his voice. ?I'm not allowed to dispense Nyokine or any of its derivatives. You'll have to wait until Master Sesso returns...?

Schurke sighed, and pushed aside the idea that had snaked it's way into his brain, He's younger... tired... perhaps...

?Perhaps you should try meditation...?

A spasm of pain, and perhaps something more...

?Perhaps,? Schurke replied softly.

Another spasm... more urgent this time. ?When will Healer Sesso return??

The young Healer rubbed his hands over his face and sighed. ?Soon, I hope...?
Master Sesso would understand.

?Yes, Master Sesso would understand...? the young Healer said dully.

Schurke blinked, surprised. Had he actually spoken aloud?

The spasm became a dull, aching need.

No one else would need to know... and you are a Healer after all...

?I'm a Healer after all...? the Padawan murmured. ?No one else would need to know...?

Quickly!

?Wait here...?

?I will...?

And as the Padawan left, Schurke leaned back and closed his eyes.

What have I done?

After securing the small amount of tablets the young Healer had given him and effectively erasing any memory of the... incident - in for a credit, in for a fortune after all- Schurke returned to his quarters and tried to think.

 

He's starting to scare me.

Oh, the poor kid. I feel so sorry for him.

 

I'm glad to see that people haven't given up on me compleatly!

I found to my dismay this AM that a Rat and a Mouse do not mix, so I am back on the lap top for today (until I can get a rat-trap and a new mouse! Or figure out how to hook up the DSL to the laptop!) But thanks for sticking around!

 

I confess! I've been a lurker here! But I first "met" Schurke last year and as usual, your story brings him to vivid life!
