The Tupac hologram killed it at Coachella 2012, and now there's this...

"Michael Jackson" performing at yesterday's (prestigious) Billboard Music Awards. Amazing, but ultimately creepy.

I'm in favor of more ways for record labels to make boatloads of cash.

At least include the video... but yeah, I'm also not a fan of this.

If they were really trying to honor MJ's legacy with that hologram, they really should've put more work into the image quality. It looked like something out of a PS2 game, which is not a compliment.

They just shouldn't have done it. It's impossible to replicate his stage presence. It was a nice tribute, I guess, but I just find the hologram idea dumb.

Just think, in the future they can record a single performance from an act and project it into hundreds of venues simultaneously! They'll save a ton of money on pesky things like travel expenses.

Honestly, though, are the concepts new?

There's already a virtual idoru in the form of Hatsune Miku in Japan so holographic entertainers are hardly without precedent (marrying them, like Rez in William Gibson's Idoru or Dr Krieger, is a ways off).

If a holographic Jim Morrison and Ray Mazarek could join Robbie Krieger and John Densmore onstage for a Doors concert, would you somehow feel like it was real then get angry and confused if you went and could tell it was a hologram?

Let them do what they will; I've no issue with it but I can't see myself paying to watch a holographic performer with the rest of his or her bandmates on stage.

Holographic "The Doors" (thanks for invoking one of my favourite bands of all time) ... would only be appropriate with LSD; that would complete the entire synthetic experience...

Yoko wouldn't let Hologram John participate in a Beatles reunion?

As for Michael Jackson, as creepy as the hologram might have been, it can't possibly even approach his real life creepiness.
