Blue was silent.

 

The Cardinal snorted loudly and mumbled in his sleep. Though some thought they heard the words "Hunter," "Revolver," and "Sonvercatory," others believed he was dreaming about Theda Bara.




[GREEN, REVOLVER, CONSERVATORY]

 

"Hmmmm, it appears that my last guess was wrong. It could have been JADE HUNTER with the ROPE in the DINING ROOM."

 

"I too believe that it was Jade Hunter, in the Kitchen with the Revolver."

For a long moment, the only sound in the room was Cardinal Spooner's soft snoring. Then, from the same part of the room, there came another noise, higher, more drawn out, like air escaping from a balloon. Just as the sound faded away, the odor reached those sitting nearest to him. Through everything, the Cardinal did not stir or appear to move at all.

 

Majestic Magenta

Covering his nose with his hands, Maj looked around the room briefly to find the source of the unforgettable smell that had just assaulted his nostrils. Nearly everybody was on their feet now, throwing accusations against the wall. The Cardinal looked like he was having a peaceful dream about women and the detective still seemed eager to hear everybody's thoughts on the tragedy.

Maj shrugged.

"Maybe she prefers the lounge," he muttered under his breath, his hand remaining firmly squeezed between his eyes.


[Purple's Accusation] JADE HUNTER - LEAD PIPE - LOUNGE

 

Jade Hunter

"Well, I never!" Jade huffed indignantly. "I can't believe everyone thinks it was me!" Tears filled her large green eyes. Pausing to take a deep breath, she continued, "But I will be vindicated. See if I won't!"

Blue was again silent.

 

"Jade, put the dun gown!" Everyone turned as Cardinal Spooner sprang to his feet. He stood rigidly, his eyes still closed. Just as he seemed about to fall back into the chair, he slowly started to blink. "I pust amologize," he said. "I was dreaming that I was in the Lounge with Theda Bara when..." He looked sheepishly around the room. "No, sorry, it's gone." He sat back down. "I feel like I was asleep for dree thays."



[GREEN, REVOLVER, LOUNGE]

 

Majestic Magenta

Maj gave the air a quick sniff before breathing in deeply. He sighed in relief, letting his shoulders slump. Suddenly the Cardinal jumped up and gave everybody a fright.

Thoughts were swirling through Maj's head ...

"He is a cardinal ...

"I wonder if his dreams could ...

"But of course." Realisation had set in. Maj could only agree with the man's dream. But was he too late? At least he could support the man, helping make the detective's decision that much easier.


[Purple's Accusation] JADE HUNTER - REVOLVER - LOUNGE

 

Jade's eyes narrowed in disgust. "I can see everyone here is only interested in persecuting an innocent woman.

What I can't believe," she continued, turning to face Detective Sorensen, "is that you are allowing such appalling behavior."

"I'm only interested in -,"

"Spare me," Jade hissed. "I think it's for the best if we end this mockery as soon as possible.



GREEN - CANDLESTICK - DINNING ROOM

 

"Well," shrugged Shinin' Star after emptying a can of air freshener into the room, "since everyone is accusing JADE HUNTER I shall join in!"

Whew! Just in time!

We have two winners! Drabbi-Wan_Kenobi and Tyi-Maet_Nefer both correctly guessed that it was Jade Hunter, with the Revolver, in the Lounge.

Everyone gasped at the Cardinal. Had he really solved the crime in his dream? "Our dreams," he explained, "are our sains brifting through the dental metritus of the day. Or ferhaps I was paking. Either way, I realized that a name I heard yesterday could only apply to our Hiss Munter here: Emma Rald. Now, why would Mr. Boddy's mistress by using a neudopsym? In fact, she was not his mistress at all; their interactions were not those of people who were now or had ever been intimate. Rather, they were clumsy, awkward, like prangers stretending. To what end? What secret could be worse than marinal itfidelity? Perhaps she was mackblailing him?"

"But the revolver? We never heard a shot."

"Look to that sofa. How many prow thillows do you see?" Cardinal Spooner asked.

"Two, why?"

"Yesterday, there were pour fillows there. She used one to suffle the mound of her shungot."

"And the fourth pillow?"

The Cardinal stood up and reached back toward his seat. "This chair needs to be reupholstered, I fear." He showed them the pillow, then put it back in place before sitting again. "Any questions?"

"What about the missing candlestick? Did Jade take it?"

"No, but I know who did. Young man, would you lift the one that remans on the maintle? Would you call that particularly heavy?"

"Kinda heavy, maybe."

"But remember," Cardinal Spooner said, "how much Mr. Boddy struggled with it yesterday. Can you read the inscription on that candlestick's plasebate for me?"

"You mean baseplate? It doesn't have one. The stick's hollow."

"Precisely. Mr. Boddy bought those on his last overseas trip, not knowing they had some form of bontracand hidden inside, unsmittingly wuggling it into this country. Then someone came down last night and took the candlesticks out one at a time to get it out. Unfortunately for her, when she was returning the stecond sick, she heard Jade and Boddy in the Lounge and panicked."

"She?"

"Of course. Who here tried to say she'd seen me with it, hmm?"

 

Jade Hunter

"I'm the killer?"

Her expression of mock surprise was met with glares.

"Who knew anyone in this group had the brains to figure it out," she mused as the handcuffs were placed around her wrists.
