When the title meant 'Return of the Jedi'
Did it meant Anakin's return to the Light side of the Force becoming a Jedi again or did it meant Luke returning to kick butt?

It got me confused when I saw 'Revenge of the Jedi', and that was many were pointing out that it is Luke taking his revenge.

Personally, I like to think of it as Anakin's return. The thought of it is thrilling, for The Chosen One to come to his senses after nearly 30 years of mindless killing.

Anakins Return to the Good side (Jedi)

Luke becomes a Jedi in this movie so the Jedi in general have returned to fight the sith.

(I'm guessing Revenge of the Jedi would of ment that the jedi will get their revenge in this movie for the many years that the emperor hunted them down. But Revenge is not something Jedi do, so it was switched to return)

Why can't it be both? Jedi can be both singular and plural... :) especially since it is Return of THE Jedi, not Return of A Jedi...

It means Anakin's return to the Lightside and The Return of the Jedi Order itself.

It means all the Jedi. Anakin returns to the light, and the Jedi Order returns to existance. Plus, in a way, Luke returns to the Jedi as well just because of when he let his anger take control for a bit.

I think JMaster Luke has it exactly right. The title nicely has more than one meaning.

In 1983 it only meant Luke becoming a Jedi.
Now, with the PTs, it could mean both Luke becoming a Jedi and Anakin's return to the light side.

Anakin still returned to the "light side" in 1983; I don't see how anything changed that. We knew he turned evil and came back, so he still "returned to the Jedi."

I take it as the plural meaning, which also refers to both Luke and Anakin. It also refers to the promise that exists and is discovered in Leia.

I doubt Lucas or any of us thought of that in 1983. If Lucas did mean "Jedi" to be Anakin, he didn't "return" for too long. He became one with the force shortly after he became Anakin again.
But I agree now because of the PT, that it makes more sense to include Anakin.

it doesn't refer to Anakin. it refers to the fact that the Jedi as a group have begun anew.

When I was really young I always thought it referred to Luke. Not sure why, now that I think about it.

I think it's referring to Anakin's redemption. After all that's what the whole saga is about, the rise and fall & redemption of Anakin Skywalker.

But it could also mean the return of THE JEDI as a whole.

I tinhk it means return of the jedi order. but then again there was still yoda left and with yoda dead there is still only one jedi.

    Anakin's return to the Jedi.

Luke's return to Yoda after promising him he would revisit Dagobah.

The whole saga is about Anakin's rise, fall and redemption. In the context of the whole saga, Anakin is the only one that ROTJ could refer to.

After the PT it has to mean Anakin, though I think it has several meanings.

It has many meanings, just like the Phantom Menace has many meanings.

'The Phantom Menace' refers to the hidden threat of Sidious, Maul and even Anakin. Maul was the only hidden threat that directly revealed itself in that movie though. And heck, maybe Episode III will reveal more meaning behind that title?
