I guess it's important for a cohesive story...

Edit: I honestly don't really care too much for the OT, so it's nothing that gives me sleepless nights, I just see it as a missed opportunity.

I have a different timeline in mind for the prequels which make more sense to me:

40 BBY - Mysterious clone armies invade the Republic from an unknown part of deep space.

39 BBY - The senate declares a state of martial law and conscripts the Galactic Star Fleet led by the Jedi.

38 BBY - General Obi-Wan Kenobi meets Anakin Skywalker and makes him his apprentice.

38 BBY - Sheev Palpatine is elected president of the Senate promising to end the thwart and find the origin of the clone invaders.

38 BBY - Anakin meets Senator Arcady of Alderaan and courts her.

32 BBY - The clone wars end with the defeat of the invading army. It's found Jedi technology was used to create the army in the first place. Most Jedi in the order are killed during the war.

25 BBY - Instability of the Clone Wars causes civil unrest, insurgency, and secession from the Republic leading to more armed conflict. This is the earliest inkling of the Galactic Civil War.

25 BBY - Palpatine frames and orders the arrest of key leaders of the Jedi order for being behind the creation of the clone army and the war. He dissolves the Jedi order and replaces it with his own. Some Jedi believe this story is true such as Anakin Skywalker who joins forces with the newly created Empire.

25 BBY - In the wake of the supposed Jedi conspiracy behind the Clone Wars, Palpatine declares himself Emperor for life with control of the galactic military.

25 BBY - Most Jedi become aware that Palpatine is a Sith trying to exterminate them, but lack the evidence needed to prove it to the rest of the galaxy. They start to align themselves with rebel factions fighting to break away from the newly declared Empire. There is fighting between the Jedi and renamed Imperial Star Fleet for years.

20 BBY - Darth Vader rises to prominence to hunt down the last of the Jedi. Most of the order is exterminated by by the Empire.

20 BBY - Luke and Leia Skywalker are born in secret and then hidden after birth in the royal household of Alderaan and also to Anakin's estranged brother.

20 BBY - The Empire gains full control of the galaxy and begins to expand.

    Excellent concepts!

My ideas are similar in many respects to this timeline and narrative.

One question though -- this story spans 20 years of time. How would you break apart these different elements into three films?

Where are the separations between your movies?

A lot of what redlightning posted seems to fit actually with what little we got from the references to the clone wars in the bantam era eu especially the works of timothy zahn and michael stackpoke. It is what I had though the prequels would be like before tpm came out. I love what we got but the above would possibly have worked better.

    I've actually thought about this.

Episode I takes place during the last years of the Clone Wars. The conflict has been raging for at least two years previously, the Republic is under martial law, entire planets are pillaged and exterminated by the clone army, etc (which explains the need for things like the Death Star later). Alderaan is nearly invaded by the clone army because of its natural resources. In the midst of this a new President of the Senate named Palpatine has been recently elected promising to bring an end to the war and find the origin of the clone army. General Kenobi arrives with his fleet to thwart the invasion and is astonished by the skill of a young commander named Anakin Skywalker who he eventually discovers is Force sensitive. His heroics garner the attention of the very grateful King Bail Organa and senator Arcadia. Anakin and Obi-Wan become fast friends. They work together to track the clone army's leader, a Dark Force user, to his secret bunker where he is defeated and killed by Obi-Wan. This goes a long way at ending the war. Anakin becomes Obi-Wan's apprentice and he also sparks a flickering romance with Senator Arcady.

Episode II takes place six years after the events of the first film. The last remnants of the clone army have long sense been stomped out by the Galactic Star Fleet and the war is essentially won. The Republic is still trying to figure out the actual origins of the clone army to begin with which were actually created by Palpatine in secret. The galaxy remains under martial law, large military occupation, a destroy galactic economy, endless planets in ruins, and the GSF exists now to prevent civil disorder instead of fighting for the glorious cause of keeping the Republic intact from the clone army. This situation puts the Republic on the constant verge of civil war with rebellions, assassination plots, and secession movements threatening the balance. This has caused the Jedi to question their role in the whole matter, especially Anakin joined in the furor of saving the galaxy.

The opening sequences of the film has Obi-Wan's fleet to put down a large uprising against the Republic. After, he eventually is called back to the Jedi temple to discuss the outcome of the war. Anakin remains behind to oversee the occupation. He is very disheartened and angered by the war effort and now having to kill the same citizens he went to war to protect from the clone threat. While on Galactic City, the Galactic Star Fleet suddenly marches into the Jedi temple and makes mass arrests of leaders of the order who are accused and framed by Palpatine of creating the clone army and being behind the war. Many corrupt soldiers massacre Jedi in the wake of this. Because of this immense conspiracy, Palpatine uses his executive authority to officially dissolve the Jedi order and to replace it with his own organization of Force users. Obi-Wan is named in the indictments, but escapes the temple to go into hiding. He reaches out to Anakin in secret who in stunned by the charges and cannot escape the overwhelming evidence which has been shown to him by the military authorities. He tries to convince Obi-Wan to turn himself in by supporting his faith that he will be given a fair trial and be found innocent. Anakin has been summoned to the capital by the military authorities to testify in the wake of the unfolding conspiracy. Senator Arcadia and King Bail Organa of Alderaan are even taken back by these actions and not sure of what to believe.

Obi-Wan and the other Jedi intend to raid the military prison where the Jedi leaders are being held and rescue them. They launch the effort, engage in a massive battle with GSF forces showing many Jedi killed and actually encounters Anakin there working with government forces. Anakin is shocked by the Jedi actions and believes the charges brought are true. Obi-Wan, knowing the truth of the situation, is forced to dual with his own apprentice to the death to accomplish the mission. Anakin is scarred and burned during the battle. The Jedi are only able to rescue a handful of leaders before having to retreat. Most of the Jedi who made the rescue are killed in the battle. Anakin is rescued by the Republic, made into a cyborg, and becomes the first in Palpatine's new Force guardians. Anakin takes the name Darth Vader to hide his identity as a former Jedi as he enacts revenge for the uprising and apparent betrayal by Obi-Wan. In the wake of Jedi rebellion, Palpatine convinces the senate to vote him Emperor for life and declares the formation of the Galactic Empire. In reaction to this, the rebel movement grows into one of the many smaller conflicts which will make up the Galactic Civil War.

Episode III continues in the midst of the Jedi war. Obi-Wan is in exile after believing that he killed his own best friend and apprentice years before. Darth Vader has been leading the Empire into hunting down the remaining Jedi. Obi-Wan and other remaining Jedi leadership fight Imperial forces, their former allies and friends, trying to keep alive what they can in the war. After a disastrous raid on a Jedi holdout, Obi-Wan flees into exile and is contacted by King Bail on Alderaan who has learned of a dark secret he wishes Obi-Wan to appear in person for. Obi-Wan is taken back by the appearance of a dark entity with so much killing. Kenobi goes to Alderaan and learns that Senator Arcady is pregnant with the offspring of a rogue Jedi she had been drugged by. She is in fear for her life and feels she will be killed by the Empire. Obi-Wan, tired of the war agrees to help take her into hiding. However, Obi-Wan is able to learns from Bail and his rebel connections that the Empire has been able to locate the secret base being used by the remaining Jedi leadership to continue the war. He fears he must warn them, but also promises to keep his vow to protect Arcady. They use Obi-Wan's underground connections developed by the Clone Wars to make safe passage to a rebel planet for her to find refuge and Kenobi himself makes the secret Jedi hideout pursued by agents of the Empire. Eventually Obi-Wan reaches the Jedi compound to deliver his warning. It comes to late when the Empire led by Darth Vader suddenly appears to take out the last core leadership of the Jedi. In the ensuing battle, Obi-Wan comes across Darth Vader, the dark entity he sensed from before and is stunned to learn the true identity of the new second in command of the Empire. This is how he also learned that Darth Vader is actually the Jedi who secretly drugged Arcady, made love to her, and conceived the offspring she is carrying. It's clear Vader while now loyal to the Emperor desired to be with Arcady in the midst of his service to the Empire. He risked his own health making love to her and also carefully treaded his loyalty to the Emperor. The battle is a blood bath, the Empire wipes out most of the Jedi on site. Very few escape alive.

Obi-Wan escapes contacts the rebels in the hopes of rescue. Learning of the what has transpired, Lady Arcady, who has been with the rebels leads the ship herself to lead the rescue. During the battle she is critically injured by an energy burst. Obi-Wan takes the ship and rushes her to Alderaan for medical help from Bail. This is provided, but it causes the emergency birth of the two Jedi twins Luke and Leia. Arcady also finds out she has irreversible damage caused by the radiation burst she was struck by. She will not live more than a few years. It is decided with the Empire now seemingly completely victorious, the twins will be split up and brought into hiding. Leia is secretly raised with Arcady on Alderaan until the time she dies. Arcady poses as a maid in Bail's palace to hide herself. Obi-Wan takes Luke to be raised by Anakin's brother Owen on Tatooine. Darth Vader believes that Arcady died from her injuries in battle and mourns her loss. He still continues to hunt down opposition to the Empire. At this point, the Empire has complete military domination of the galaxy and will for the next decade and a half at least. Bail keeps his connections to the rebellion secretly going as well until the time is right.

Very interesting! That's an intriguing overview for an alternative prequels.

I really like how the Clone Wars begin immediately, and I like the way you depict the transformation from republic toward empire. And I think a lot of people were expecting EpIII to be something along your lines, a story in which Vader is already in the suite hunting down the remaining Jedi.

I really have enjoyed a lot of this thread. I'll have to sit down sometime and post my alternate.

So before going into my re-write, I'll outline two important conceptual changes ---the Republic and the Jedi Order ---that would drastically alter the story and structure of the PT.

    In my PT:

    1. The Republic is not a corrupt dinosaur already on its deathbed. The Republic is not tainted and silently manipulated by the wealthy financial interests. The Republic is an idyllic galactic government, and its citizens and public servants take great pride in what a wonderful form of government has provided to the galaxy for eons.

But one of the reasons the Republic isn't at the mercy of powerful special interests is because the Republic is itself a confederacy. It is NOT a federal republic that already has a great deal of centralized power on Coruscant. It is a decentralized alliance of sovereign worlds who run their own internal affairs for the most part and use the Galactic Senate on Coruscant as a sounding board for broader matters and as a way to ensure the broader goals of the Republic --no slavery, peace between member worlds, free and open hyper-lanes, etc --are always being met. Taxation of trade routes via the Galactic Senate wouldn't be a problem here, because the Galactic Senate wouldn't have the power to do so. Taxation, like almost everything else, is a matter for each homeworld to decide internally. In my PT, power does not flow from the Center already. That only happens later after the Empire is established.

The Founding Doctrine of the Republic is the concept of "Home Rule," or the sovereignty of each star system. THIS is why the Republic has never created a centralized Grand Army of the Republic that can be controlled by leaders on Coruscant. The Republic is like NATO, or the original United States, not post-WWII United States.

    2. The Jedi Order is far from the public view. They do not have a temple on Coruscant, and the order is, like the Republic, highly decentralized. The ancient Jedi temples are located on a hidden world that is protected by a ring of violent nebuli and the Jedi's skill with the Force. They are watchers and guardians, but they do NOT play a role in or meddle in Republic politics. Never would you see Jedi in the Galactic Senate, they are practially like ghosts to non-Force users. People know about them, but they're almost mythical even to the regular people in the GFFA.

Jedi can love and marry, both within and outside the Order. The only catch is apprentices (not such a term as "padawan" here) and young Knights cannot become involved with non-Force users because there is too great of a power imbalance between Force users and regular people, especially with youth.

The starting point for most Jedi is around ages 12-15. They are not taken from birth, they become apprentices of their own free will, and do so only because they've been asked by another Jedi who recognizes their potential. An apprentice will travel throughout the GFFA with his/her master doing what Jedi do, traveling singularly or in very small groups while ensuring peace and justice are being kept in the galaxy according to the Republic's ancient rules. Along the way, they constantly learn about the Force and watch and emulate their masters. When the time is right, their masters take them to the hidden Jedi homeworld to complete their final trials before the are knighted.

Both of these changes would really starkly contrast with the vision of Imperial Rule throughout the GFFA we saw in the OT. The pre-imperial GFFA is a decentralized bastion of proud independence and local autonomy.

Those two different conceptions of the Republic and the Jedi will necessarily make my re-write much different.

I love TPM, but timeline wise, it just put too much pressure on the next two movies to rush through stuff, AOTC should've been the timeline for the first movie. The second could've been the Clone Wars and the start of ROTS, then they'd have far more time in ROTS to flesh out Anakins fall, stuff like that, give us some more Vader/Palpatine stuff towards the end.

When Anakin informs Master Windu that Palpatine is a Sith Lord, draw it out a little bit. Have Windu be seen to be deilberating taking Anakin or not. Then have him decide not to, but instead order Anakin to go to the Council chamber and inform the rest of the Jedi Council of his startling discovery. Then as he is about to activate the beacon, have Palpatine's words which played in ROTS make him confused and hesitate.

When Windu arrived at the office, have the same dialogue but different choreography:

Palpatine jumps and swirls whilst force pushing Windu backward into the corridor. Just as Palpatine lands, a second lightsaber emerges from one of his strange statues in his office and kills one Jedi from behind. This distracts a second Jedi when Palpatine lands and plunges his current lightsaber into his chest. Kit Fisto is shocked as Palpatine then picks up his other lightsaber and engages him whilst Windu runs back toward them. Fisto manages to parry Palpatine's strikes from his two lightsabers and even knock one out of his hand. But Palpatine turns on the spot and swipes him across the chest killing him just as Windu arrives and reengages. Then the fight continues as it did in the film, with Palpatine driving Windu back (but without the silly faces) and then Windu gaining control and showing us what a badass he is. Windu then drives Palpatine to the window and bests him whilst kicking his lightsaber out the window.

Then have a moment where Palpatine tries to use the force to push but Windu counters it and then show a panicked Palpatine desperately being guided back to the edge by Windu walking forward. Then show Anakin emerge through the three crumpled Jedi bodies and see the situation. Show how Palpatine is genuinely outplayed and then sees Anakin and utilizes the situation.

Also in ROTS, show more of Order 66, either Jedi being killed by clones or otherwise the Temple scenes. Show us more Jedi in this movie so we feel a connection to them.

Also in AOTC, have Yoda take a gunship of clones with him to arrest Dooku. Have Dooku's first force attack on Yoda cut them off from the fight by blocking the corridor. Then slow down the Yoda fight so there isn't too much swivelling. Have Dooku worried as Yoda is too powerful for him and then a shot of the clones working through the blockage with some tool (much like Qui gon cutting through the bridge door in TPM). Then Dooku plays the same move by targeting Anakin and Obi Wan. Have Yoda hesitate to pursue Dooku and then decide to save the Jedi. This time have Dooku's ship take off BEFORE Yoda has finished lol. Then when Padme arrives, same thing she shoots at Dooku, and then her and her clones meet the other clones who finally blast through the rocks blocking the way and then they discover the wounded Jedi.

Have Anakin struggle to get up, not just suddenly stand up lol.

In TPM, have the transmitter on the Naboo ship damaged so they can only receive and not send for help. It makes no sense to be able to send untraceable Jedi 913 transmissions in AOTC and ROTS and not TPM. Have Qui Gon be presented with the choice of making for a bigger space port like Mos Eisley and trying to barter for a ride on a vessel toward the Core, but a massive sandstorm will mean a delay to get there. Then he is presented with Anakin offering them shelter and feeling his connection to the Force.

I think looking back the prophecy for Anakin could have been similar to the witches telling MacBeth in Shakespeare's play he was eventually going to be king of Scotland only because he murders him to get the crown. An earlier version of the prophecy had Anakin being the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy, done so because he kills all of the others. The Emperor also fears the same prophecy which says the Son of the Suns will defeat a great evil, meaning him. He makes Anakin out to be his servant because he fears him becoming too powerful.

I used to write star wars related stories for school reports but they all sucked when I look back at them. I have thought about rewriting the prequels back in the days when I thought they were bad because everyone in my family said so ( thank goodness I don't listen to them anymore ). I never saw how they don't match up with the original films.

I'm going to try the MacBeth storyline for Anakin.

Obi-Wan and Anakin are fighting off in the Clone Wars. Clone forces have invaded the capital of the Republic, but the attack was thwarted. The attack fails, but and a Jedi is captured and blamed for treason and hauled away. Three witches again to Obi-Wan this time appear and predict that a student of Kenobi will be promoted to assistant representative to the President of the Senate and be a great guardian of democracy, Palpatine, by General Kenobi. This occurs at the end of the battle. The witches reappear and tell Obi-Wan and Anakin both that Kenobi will serve the President of the Senate as his personal representative. Anakin believes in this more. The highest ranking member of the Jedi Order praises Skywalker and Kenobi for his victory. Skywalker returns to his wife, who reveals she is pregnant and tells her of the prophecy.

Padme challenges his manhood and tells him to duel and defeat the current representative to prove his worth. He dresses in a hood to challenge the master and accidentally kills him. He does so and frames an assassin for it. Another person succeeds the fallen leader and other go into hiding. Anakin sees a vision of the fallen leader at an event later on and panics. Disturbed, Anakin is able to summon the witches again and ask them for their prophecies. They give him a figurative vision that another Jedi witnessed the killing and will tell. This Jedi is deep friend of Master Kenobi who is his dear friend.

Anakin arranges for a bounty hunter and other mercenaries to kill the Jedi he fears might have been a witness. They are successful. Lady Skywalker goes mad and begins to sleep walk. General Kenobi finds her in this maddened state and summons a physician. She bemoans the murders of the other Jedi which is sensed by Anakin to have been the culprit from her sincerity. This alerts Kenobi to raise security forces to find and arrest Anakin. In his despair, Lady Skywalker kills herself. The Jedi are able to acquire medical help ad to save the two twins she is pregnant with.

Anakin in deep panic has gone into hiding, he learns of his wife's death. However he feels his is immune thanks to the witches prophecy. The Jedi gather forces to locate and arrest Anakin. Anakin however is able to garner the support of President Palpatine that Obi-Wan is in fact the one behind the other representatives murder, behind allowing the clone attack to occur, and is also trying to kill him, his successor. Palpatine raises an army to counter the force of the Jedi. When Obi-Wan and others try to arrest Anakin, the battle between both forces occurs. During the battle, Anakin is severly injured and becomes burned and scarred during it. The unrest convinces Palpatine that the Jedi treason is indeed real and declares them all enemies of the Republic. The Republic Star Fleet hunts them down and destroys most of them.

Anakin is placed into a cyborg suit and becomes the servant of Palpatine who declares himself Emperor in the wake of the supposed Jedi conspiracy. It is revealed he has misinterpreted the prophecy of the witches as he has help end democracy and not protect it. Obi-Wan of course escapes, hides the Skywalker twins, and goes into hiding as well. Eventually the son of Skywalker becomes the head of the new Jedi Order and directly serves the future President of the Senate, his sister Leia. Luke of course is brief student of Kenobi as well. Their prophecies have been fulfilled.

    Here's what I would do:

    The Phantom Menace:

    1) Show more Naboo people being rounded up.

2)Show these camps the Federation goons talk about

    3)More Maul

4)Show an wrecked Otah Gunga when Jar Jar swims to find his people. The TF has been there and wrecked the place. There are some dead goonguns.

    5) The Podrace is two laps, not three.

    6) Aurra Sing takes shots at Anakin during the race instead of Tuskens.

7)Show the hunger strike the Naboo are undertaking in protest

8)Add some more Maul lines like those in the novel and revised rough draft

9)In Otah Gunga, a probe droid enters the room and Obi-Wan slices it up. The clock is now ticking before the TF will show up so the heroes must hurry.

    10) Add Jimmy Smits as Bail approving the motion to vote for no confidence against Valorum. These scenes were originally shot with actor Adrian Dunbar but cut from the film.
    Here's one:

11)Anakin destroys the droid command ship by intentionally firing the missiles at the reactor.

alright so basically, I've had a rewrite in my head that I just never typed out (too much time lol), but basically, this is what anakin's story is in my rewrite: obi-wan is the main protagonist, but the focus gradually shifts towards anakin as the story progresses. in episode I, we see is beginnings mostly similar to the actual episode I (except he's in his late teens) but in my rewrite he's only really prominent in the second act and the final scene when obi-wan promises to train him. in episode II, anakin has a more prominent role, being with obi-wan for the entire first half of the film (and when he rescues him on geonosis, similar to the actual episode II). in the middle of the film, maul (or an entirely new character but we'll just say maul) taunts anakin and he unleashes his rage, the first sign of his potential turn. prior to this point, palpatine and maul are actually attempting to turn obi-wan, who is more cocky, adventurous, and almost hedonistic in my rewrite (becoming fully wise by episode III). the last scene of episode II would be palpatine telling maul that there plan is almost ready and the rule of two will no longer be needed. maul responds that obi-wan is a lost cause, and that they should focus on turning someone else (foreshadowing the events of episode III).

episode III would be similar. anakin kills maul over coruscant (on palpatine's command) despite being morally conflicted. however, I'd cut out the entire greivous subplot and to allow more time for anakin's turn. instead of shmi dying in episode II, anakin would go to tatooine in episode III, witnessing her death and killing the tusken raiders in rage. this action would get him suspended from the council, who already distrust anakin for his arrogance desire for power. this makes him further disillusioned. depressed and confused, he turns to palpatine, who begins subtly indocrintating him into the darkside of the force. obi-wan would be sent away to fight the final battle of the clone wars (but with less screen time), leaving it with just anakin and palpatine. while this is going on, palpatine manipulates the political system to allow himself more powers. mace windu begins to secretly plot an assassination of the chancellor. during a military parade, they launch a rocket at palpatine, but he survives. anakin witnesses this and after confronting palpatine, doesn't know who to side with. he has actual evidence that the jedi have done something (or at least mace and a few others), but he also a) has warmed up to the dark side and b) is mad at the jedi for suspending him and preventing him from gaining further power. so after the scene of him and padme staring out the window, anakin goes to confront mace. but he has already made his mind up. he'll try to talk mace out of killing palpatine, but if he strikes, anakin will not be opposed to killing him. his allegiance is already to palpatine and the jedi is already his enemy (though he still cries after killing mace 'cause of how far his life has turned around).

makes more sense this way I think. not gonna type a full synopsis (which would make it better) 'cause just typing that was a lot lol.

Very good, mate. Much more believable.

I like that you kept a lot of elements of the PT. There is a lot of good stuff in the PT. Where it ultimately fails is execution.

And I like the suspension from the Jedi. Much more believable reason for Anakin's descent.

    Kudos!

To me the plot of the video game of ROTS makes the most sense because Anakin walks into what he thinks is Mace Windu actually trying to assassinate the Chancellor. He believes a cou led by the Jedi has occurred and feels it justified to lock down the temple with clone troopers. Any small act can start a skirmish between the Jedi and clones to cause a battle that levels the temple. This causes Anakin to simply embrace the dark side out of uncontrollable anger and think there is a legitimate cou.

Having 10,000 Jedi in the prequels was dumb, IMO. I would have much preferred a Knights of the Round Table scenario with maybe a dozen or two dozen Jedi at the most (and no Yoda).

idk. I feel like yoda needed to be in the pt. he's an essential part of obi-wan's backstory and that era of jedi in general. showing his glorydays as a jedi master compared to his state in the ot could have been a satisfying arc as well. I would have done it differently though.

even the 1,000 jedi thing I would kind of do. I'd have the focus be almost entirely on just twelve though (the council) and I'd play them up to be more 'spiritual' and doing more than anti-climatic political dialogue. I'd even keep all the jedi fighting in geonosis arena. but much differently in execution.

For the life of me, I just can't see a reason why Yoda needs to be in the PT. Based on what's in the OT, he's only essential to Obi Wan's back story in that he trained him (on Dagobah, the same way Luke was trained) and maybe gave him some advice here and there when Obi Wan occasionally stopped by to tell him about Anakin, or brush up on Force techniques.

Being centuries old, Yoda easily could have been retired from traveling the galaxy as a Jedi. He exists only to mediate in the Force say in the last century of his life.
