it is similar but that's coincidence. using the stabbing motion was a conscious choice by palps whereas rey was just a novice. good eye though.

As in most films, the realism of SW swordplay varies moment by moment. Thrusting attacks are very functional and realistic. Wide swings are more impressive to the casual observer, so choreographers often favor them in dramatic films.

Historically, most swordsmen understood that the point was deadlier than the edge of the blade. Chopping with the edge might make a wide gaping wound, but not a deep one, while the point makes only a small hole and goes deep into the squishy bits of the anatomy. I suppose one could debate whether or not that difference holds true for lightsabers as opposed to steel blades.

Just to add that in the last TLJ trailer her LS scene was shot in reverse. Her motions look way more natural when played in reverse.

Yeah seeing how light sabers can cut through steel like butter, I'm not so sure that point matters

But they can't always cut steel like butter. Qui-gon struggled to cut open the blast doors early in TPM, and Luke's strike to Vader's arm failed to "disarm" Vader in ESB, so the visual evidence suggests that there can be significant resistance to the cutting power of a saber. Not all the time though, as any of the characters with only one hand can testify.

Luke grazed Vader's shoulder armor, which is likely designed to deflect high-energy weapons. Qui-Gon didn't struggle to cut through the initial set of doors, in fact he was almost through when Gunray closed the blast doors. That created two additional sets of doors that Qui-Gon's blade had to cut through. That took time, as the width of the three doors was about the same as Qui-Gon's blade length. The only example of a metal object actually resisting a lightsaber's direct strike is the railing in Palpatine's throne room. Luke's blade bounces clean off that thing. I'm guessing it had some sort of low-level ray shielding that could endure one hit, but not a second one. Lightsabers can, by and large cut through durasteel with ease.
