    William Shakespeare

    VS

    [image=http://etext.library.adelaide.edu.au/a/austen/jane/austen.jpg]

    Jane Austen

    THE SCENARIO

Some high school students worse nightmare is to study the plays of William Shakespeare. Some others are to read the book of Jane Austen. Either way, English classes aren't looking good this year.

Which convoluted, pompus story writer will be crowned as England's finest?

    Sammy:

    Shakespeare'll kill it.

    Salty:

    Agreed

    Sammy:

    He kills stuff.

    Adam:

Austen can pull Keira Knightley into a movie, that's pulling power. Austen wins hands down. [face_love]

    Salty:

That may be true but Shakespeare is a mean bastard. He likes to kill off people.

    Adam:

He only puts them out of their misery. Jane continues to frustrate her characters and readers never ever letting them get together and live happilly ever after. She's the Devil [face_devil]

    Sammy:

    HE KILLS STUFF AND STUFF!!!!

    Adam:

Jane puts people into bed  More sex!!! [face_mischief]

So will Romeo and Juliet overcome Pride and Prejudice. Or will Emma out do Hamlet? put your pens to paper and write a 500 word eassay on what you think!

    Billy Boy Shake for me!

I haven't posted a sonnet in awhile. In fact, I forgot where I left off.

    The Blue Master Presents:

    Sonnets of William Shakespeare
    Sonnet 27

    XXVII.
Weary with toil, I haste me to my bed,
    The dear repose for limbs with travel tired;
But then begins a journey in my head,
To work my mind, when body's work's expired:
For then my thoughts, from far where I abide,
Intend a zealous pilgrimage to thee,
And keep my drooping eyelids open wide,
Looking on darkness which the blind do see
Save that my soul's imaginary sight
Presents thy shadow to my sightless view,
Which, like a jewel hung in ghastly night,
Makes black night beauteous and her old face new.
Lo! thus, by day my limbs, by night my mind,
For thee and for myself no quiet find.

    repost from phat:

    dude

Shakes is gonna take down that jane austin lady faster than you can say "whither for thou discontented enchantresses, lying on thine futile buttresses..." with one foul swoop of his feather quill pen.

and when he's done he's gonna write a play about it -- "Death of a Writer"

William Shakespeare gets my vote. He's obviously the closest to the blue as he had the good dumb sense to call one of his characters "Bottom" ... which always gets a snigger in the classroom and when reading it aloud, leads to the only time when everyone wants to be bottom of the class :)

Jane Austen is the skank's banquet.

Having to read "Emma" was one of the most hideously boring things I've ever had to do.

I read a lot of Shakespeare... but never picked up an Austen novel.

I guess I'm out of the loop there on that literary figure.

HS English was always kinda hit or miss for me. I did very well with the Shakespeare except for Macbeth for some reason.. and I enjoyed the Stienbeck and Hemingway stuff too. I don't think I ever actually read Catcher in the Rye or A Seperate Peace... I just kinda faked it when we had to read those.

Hey Paul... Good day, ol chap :)

I mostly enjoyed Dostoevsky in High School. We read Crime and Punishment over the summer between Junior and Senior year, and then my teacher recommended The Brother's Karamzov, so I read that also. Dostoevsky is some really good stuff!

I refused to read "Lord of the Flies" in high school. I'd seen the movie at 11 [the old version] and it just angered and upset me so much I've refused to have anything to do with it since then.

Funny [as in weird, OMG, um, why?] thing is I saw it at a girl's birthday party. NOT my suggestion for good viewing for an 11 year old's birthday.

Hey Space .. Good day ol chap - hope you're tickety boo :)

Not picked up any Austen novel? You haven't missed much!

Allow me to demonstrate with an edited extract from aforementioned Pride And Prejudice.
Everyone, a vote for Austen is a vote for this drivel:

    "What is his name?"

    "Bingley."

    "Is he married or single?"

"Oh! Single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!"

"How so? How can it affect them?"

"My dear Mr Bennet," replied his wife, "how can you be so tiresome! You must know that I am thinking of his marrying one of them."

"Is that his design in settling here?"

"Design! Nonsense, how can you talk so! But it is very likely that he may fall in love with one of them, and therefore you must visit him as soon as he comes."

"I daresay Mr. Bingley will be very glad to see you; and I will send a few lines by you to assure him of my hearty consent to his marrying whichever he chooses of the girls; though I must throw in a good word for my little Lizzy."

"I desire you will do no such thing. Lizzy is not a bit better than the others; and I am sure she is not half so handsome as Jane, nor half so good-humoured as Lydia. But you are always giving her the preference."

"They have none of them much to recommend them," replied he; "they are all silly and ignorant like other girls; but Lizzy has something more of quickness than her sisters."

    [face_tired] zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz [face_tired]

If anyone says this is good, I will fill your boots with wet fish.

I must counter this Austen creature with the power vested in me by following the teachings of our beloved insane prophet and the all powerful drunken blue yoda ...
