I heard somewhere that Rick McCallum "was going to write the opening crawl for Episode III, because he had written the earlier ones as well".

Is there any truth to this?

If so, he didn't do a very good job. "War!" "The fiendish Droid leader" Ha. It makes me giggle with delight.

I like that line, as it was the truth after all.

Everyone in the galaxy refers to Count Dooku as Count Dooku, except for Sidious in one scene, at the end of AOTC where the regular Joe doesn't pay attention.
It would be nuts to call him Darth Tyranus in the opening crawl.

This time, we'll take him together
I was about to say that

Why weren't CAPITAL LETTERS used in the PT scrolls the way they were in OT scrolls?

    " ... the mysterious COUNT DOOKU ...

" ... the fiendish droid leader, GENERAL GRIEVOUS ...

    Could've been cool

If he did write them, that would explain the woeful, and unecessarily exclaimed, "War!"

Capital letters are used in AOTC, ANH and ROTJ. See the pattern?

I myself never liked the capital letters. It seemed to suggest someone was shouting...WAR! COUNT DOOKU! GRIEVOUS! Meh....

Lars_Muul: Thanks for clearing that up about the capital letters in the opening scrolls. I didn't realize only 3 movies used the capitals. That would be a good trivia question.

And you're also right about it being nuts to have used "Darth Tyranus" in the opening scroll to ROTS. No one knows him by that name, and it certainly would've been confusing to the audience.

Yep, it's only the odd-numbered films which have capital letters in them.

For some more entirely useless information about the opening crawls...

ROTJ is the only one to have only one sentence in the first paragraph.
ROTS is the only one to have more than two sentences in the first paragraph.

ANH and ROTJ are the only two where the last word in the opening crawl is "galaxy".
However, in both ESB and AOTC the last word in one of the other paragraphs is "galaxy".
TPM contains "galaxy" near the end of the last paragraph, and ROTS, in a shocking break with tradition, does not feature it anywhere!

ANH contains one character's name (Leia).
ESB contains two (Luke and Vader), one of which (Skywalker) is mentioned twice.
ROTJ contains three (Luke, Han and Jabba), and once again Luke's name appears twice.

TPM contains no names at all, just vague references to the "Supreme Chancellor" and "two jedi knights".
AOTC contains two, Amidala and Dooku.
ROTS contains two also, Palpatine and Grievous, with Palpatine mentioned twice (but only by his title the second time)

Oh, yeah, and Rick McCallum? Maybe he wrote them. Maybe he just helped George write them. This seems likely, since George got some help from a lot of his film-making friends to write the ANH opening crawl (he was having trouble getting it short enough!).

    No prob, DuBlanc :)
I really like how Lucas kept to his old patterns to give the Saga a sense of symmetry.
Except for the fact that the opening scroll in ROTJ doesn't begin with a sentence that describes the state of the galaxy :(

    Peace!

Yeah, and he invented the internet too.

Does anyone else ever get the idea that Ricky has an inflated view of his own importance? Does anyone know what he actually did as "producer" of the OT: SEs and the PT? In film, isn't the producer usually a studio representative responsible for making sure everyone gets paid? Does he work for LFL, or is he just one of GL's buds?

He was producing. What that basically means is that he made sure that everything worked out as smooth as possible.
In other words, he had a lot on his hands.
Don't know who he works for, but he's been working a lot with Lucas, so I guess they're kind of buds :)

    This is seriously grim
    But, not undoable

I loved the opening scroll of ROTS, especially "War!"

Definately has that old time news reel feeling.

ROTS actually contains three (Count Dooku).

also ROTJ is the only crawl that ends with three dots instead of four.... which bugs me. i was hoping they would fix it for the special editions/DVDs but they didn't.

"War!" is fine. "There are heroes on both sides. Evil is everywhere" is truly terrible.

    Strilo... bashed? [face_shocked] :p

I think he (GL) dropped the name Tyrannus because it was so little used in AOTC that the average Joe would have had no idea who he was talking about from the crawl (not that they knew who Grievous was, though).
