Amph Riding the lightning - the JC heavy metal thread

I recently watched that documentary which was referenced in this thread on the Norwegian black metal scene. It was really interesting so I listened to Darkthrone and Burzum on the way home yesterday. It was actually better than I thought it was going to be, although I don't I don't really perceive it as being that "heavy". I know that sounds ridiculous but it just doesn't make me grit my teeth. For me anyway, there's something about music which makes it "heavy" other than the use of distortion and growly vocals. There were a few riffs which were totally headbang inducing, but a lot of it kind of just washed over me on an emotional level.

I remember when I was first getting into BM my metalhead friend asked if I had listened to any Burzum yet.

"No, also didn't he... like... stab a dude?"
"Yeah but it was a huh, wow."

And then I decided to buy Filosofem instead of Burzum so I still didn't get that joke for like a month.

 

tbf Filosofem is a great album.

That 25min ambient track, Jesus' Dod, so good.

 

Oh, yeah, I think it's definitely his best.

 

Is any of his post-incarceration material worth listening to?

Mind you the best track on the album was just a remix of "Dauði Baldrs" without the awesome synth sax.

 

Yes, watch his youtube videos extolling the virtues of keeping the white race pure. They're simply delightful.

 

Oh yeah, I've seen his vlogs. Quality entertainment.

Also I forgot about some of the re-recorded songs which I actually have listened to. This might be blasphemy but I prefer the re-recorded Ea, Lord of the Depths over the original.

 

To be fair, he argues all races should be kept pure and distinct. It's segregationist, not genocidal.

Part of me thinks the Nazi stuff is just pushing buttons. Then the other part reminds the one part that Varg murdered someone and this would be trivial by comparison.

I feel like I have less devotion to Mastodon than just Crack the Skye and nothing's ever really changed that. Although I did dig Once More 'Round the Sun a lot and if Leviathan is on I'm not complaining, y'know?
