Perhaps this will be the Caprica to Alien's BSG. So still in the same universe, just not focusing on the xenos.

xenomorphs (according to the alien books) are a biological weapon--so how and why they were created might be an interesting story.

Well, ok. Prometheus then. I was kinda getting geared up for Alien stuff, but oh well.

    INFO

"The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo's" Noomi Rapace is set to star in Ridley Scott's "Prometheus," 20th Century Fox's original sci-fi epic that was initially conceived as a prequel to Scott's own "Alien," the studio announced on Friday.

Oscar winners Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron are reportedly circling the film's other female lead, and there are three other major roles to be cast.

The movie is now a stand-alone original story with no overt connection to the Alien series. It sounds like it will maintain the same mood and tone of grimy sci-fi horror, but that's about it.

Personally I'm glad. I don't need to see the origin of the Alien. Its scarier if it is simply is. No further explanation required.

Sprawling, unfocused plot that exasperates people and loses backing just before it starts to improve?

    Caprica [face_crying]

Anyway, this sounded stupid as an Alien prequel but might have potential now. We'll see if Scott is able to restrain himself like his earlier days or if it'll be Robin Hood crap.

Sounds like there won't be any action til the last 1/3 of the movie. That could be a good thing, or a bad thing, depending how well the first 2/3 is written.

That's fine by me, provided it keeps Alien's macabre tone.

    From Cracked:

The unstoppable extraterrestrial killing machine from Ridley Scott's Alien franchise and one of the most iconic movie monsters of the modern age. Also, a space rapist.

The unstoppable extraterrestrial killing machine from Ridley Scott's Alien and one of the most iconic movie monsters of the modern age ... that can freaking talk.

This rumor has persisted on the Internet for some time now and goes back to an alleged Ridley Scott quote where the director discusses his early idea for the first movie's ending. In the version you know, the story ends with the alien creature dead and Ripley putting herself in stasis (and in tiny panties). The original plan, however, was for the alien to bite off Ripley's head, sit in her chair, and record a final entry in the ship's log, imitating Ripley's voice. Then, we assume, lie back as scary music plays and the camera slowly pans to the alien's growing smile right before the end credits roll.

Some of you may think that would be just an awesome ending, and some of you probably feel like that would be the most unintentionally hilarious climax outside of Darth Vader's "NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" at the end of Revenge of the Sith. All we can say is that it's kind of hard to imagine what the subsequent films would have looked like with talking xenomorphs. (If you're not sure what we mean, picture the first huge action scene in Alien, only instead of the aliens creeping silently out of the walls, imagine them talking **** the whole time. With, let's say, thick Wisconsin accents.)

The producers purportedly rejected the ending, not so much because of the talking alien but because they wanted Ripley to survive and take out the alien for the happy ending (and leaving the door open for sequels).

It's too bad Ridley Scott has dropped plans for an Alien prequel/reboot (it will be an original sci-fi film instead). Maybe he was intending to go back to his original vision.

Just posting that for the last bit. I would wonder if somehting like that will crop up in Prometheus.

    Ridley clears the air

Prometheus director Ridley Scott has finally come forward to make sense of the plethora of rumors circulating about the film's plot. The big news: The film will not be a prequel to the Alien series. Originally intended as a set of prequels for the Alien franchise, the project would be scrapped in favor of an altered form of Lost mastermind Damon Lindelof's script, which would eventually become Prometheus. However, rumors seemed to persist that the film would maintain its connection to the Alien universe and its status as a prequel, even with a recent story alleging a leaked plot focusing on the origin of the Alien Xenomorphs. All of that, however, came to an end when Scott spoke to The Daily Mail at a Sunset Boulevard set pre-Oscar get-together where he made clear the film's status as an original storyline. With that finally put to bed, the cast of the film, which confirmed stars Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, and Michael Fassbender is already continuing to grow with the announcement of three more acquisitions. How is the transformed project shaping up?

After declaring unequivocally that Prometheus is NOT in any way a prequel to Alien, Scott would then describe the project:

"It?s the story of creation, the gods and the man who stood against them." Being jokingly understated, he would declare: "It?s not a small film." Adding: "I?m using the giant James Bond 007 stage at Pinewood and six other sound stages to film it."

That was about the extent to which Scott would discuss the film, since his desire to keep details of the script secret seems to be top priority going into production. As he comments:

"I was insistent that the script not leak onto the internet, where it gets dissected out of context, which spoils it for everyone."

In the past, Scott described the film rather cryptically as "a new, grand mythology and universe" in which fans would recognize "strands of Alien DNA." It would be that figurative comment that led to the speculation about it retaining its status as an Alien prequel. However, given what we now know, it was simply an expression of just how ambitious this new project will become. So, it would still not be outside the realm of possibility to see some example of the HR Giger type imagery which inspired the original Alien show up in Prometheus. In that sense, having been spawned from a nixed prequel project, the film will remain a stylistic cousin of the Alien franchise, while not being constrained with its diluted nature after too many sequels and follow-ups. Considering that Fox Studio put up a reported $250 million for those would-be prequels, a new status as a start-up franchise can only help its chances.

Well...being all the back and forth I dont suppose we will really know for sure until the first trailers are released.
