It's a real shocker.

 

Quite stunned about this. A pioneer in comedy whose contributions were made at just the right time to have a strong influence on my own personal tastes. Filthy, Rich,& Catflap, Young Ones, Blackadder, The Dangerous Brothers, Kevin Turvey, and Bottom to name but just a few,

 

I'll add The New Statesman and The Comic Strip Presents... to that excellent list, hal.

For the people who don't know him, he was Fred in Drop Dead Fred, and in the pub in American Werewolf in London. I think they'd be his most well known roles to anyone not sure who he is.

 

How could I miss Alan B'stard! His appearances in Jonathan Creek were also typically show-stealing.

I was shocked when I saw the news about Rik Mayall as well. BBC News didn't have a cause of death when I looked. I loved Bottom - I saw it live in London some years ago.

 

I grew up with Bottom and The Young Ones. Shocking indeed.

 

I should probably watch these.

BBC News report is saying he died at home this morning with his family present but no cause of death is being reported. Sounds more like an illness to me.

 

Really shocked by this death.

BBC News is saying that his death was sudden - sounds like heart attack or stroke to me. He was only in his 50s.

Bastard! Just to make things worse, he'll be outlived by Cliff Richard! Dad's a huge fan of The Young Ones while I was into Black Adder so it'll definitely gets mention at the dinner table tonight. I must say I preferred his latter sitcom, Bottom ahead of The Young Ones. But, for me personally, this performance of his will always be my favourite:
