The Nobel laureate just passed away. I learned to read with his books, so this hit close home. At least Juliet has probably never heard of him. Let's talk about what a fantastic writer he was.
Love One Hundred Years of Solitude. I've read a couple of his short story collections, as well. Wonderful writer.... rip.
We read snippets of his work in Spanish class, but I've never read a full story or novel whether in the original or in translation. We talked about his works in English class too, but mostly in terms of his influences on Esquivel. I'll have to make a note to fix the oversight, but it's a pretty paltry thing to say I guess. Missa ab iPhona mea est.
Ugh, I really must get around to reading One Hundred Years of Solitude. With my Spanish it may feel like a hundred years before I get through it.
I'm glad he got a thread instead of a brief mention in the death thread I've only read one hundred days and while difficult it was extremely memorable. Rip
he's kind of ubiquotous in the united states as a literary reference to drop, so Juliet316 has probably at least heard oprah mention him or something
yeah, i almost said he's the "dane cook of magical realism" but that would also imply he's bad and i havent read him yet so i cant say that i have love in the time of cholera on my shelf in english but i havent got to it yet. i was considering buying one of his in spanish to read because i want to start reading in spanish (i think im pretty close to ready and it will help me advance my current spanish skills if nothing else) but i decided on isabel allende's casa de los espiritus instead
why do you think i picked allende, lol? are there any great reactionaries in the modern spanish canon? i cant think of any. maybe spanish is the language that defies the wider rule? maybe it is the social-est language i guess an arguement could be made for borges but i havent read him myself and he claims to be an anarchist soooo
which was he when he was writing? or both?! that would be the true test. if he was a better writer as a communist or as a neoliberal
wiki indicates his political shift coincided with his fourth novel. cant find any opinions about whether his early or latter output is better regarded. i did find an anecdote that he apparently used to be bros with garcia marquez and then they wound up fighting and vargas llosa literally punched garcia marquez in the face lol
Just a few weeks ago I saw a play based on Erendira (girl prostituted by her total pond scum grandmother) - one of many ancillary characters that popped up in 100 Years of Solitude - and made me want to read it all over again. I loved that novel back in high school, definitely one of my favourite books ever. Adiós, Gabo. :-(
