JCC RIP Manned Space Travel

The last manned mission to the moon launched 40 years ago today.

 

Oh thank god. All this time I thought people died in the shuttle disasters.

 

Meh, whatever. I say that if we can do stuff in space without having to send people up there, then all the better. It's probably much cheaper too not having to build crew space and life support systems into a spacecraft.

 

let's dare to dream big. big savings i mean.

But its not as much fun.

 

I agree with that completely. But I think we're going to have to have a manned presence in space to really make that work.

The space shuttle: a generational waste of time of money. But the kids love em.

 

also is there anything we can do about solar flares or gamma ray bursts because **** those things

 

gamma ray burst - not likely and no way to prepare. But if you're going to focus on legitimate threats to the species, asteroid impact has to be prioritized somewhere behind all forms of man-made apocalypse likely to happen on a shorter time scale: nuclear war, climate change, resource depletion, population overshoot, etc.

Knowing would have been so good if they chopped off the last 5 minnits.

When we find habitable planets with our next generation of space telescopes and build a warp drive, we'll have manned missions again. Non-interstellar travel is boring, anyway.
