There was actually a meme going around facebook of a picture of a rose with some cliché message about Boston after the bombings.

Speaking of, remember the dude on my Facebook who was really offended by Ebert's review of Wrath? Can we all remember that now?

Harryhausen really put a bit of magic up on the screen whenever he was called to breath life into something impossible. It may not have looked real, but it was magical, and CGI has yet to generate the same sense of wonder in me.

I think I was 7 when I saw "The Valley of Gwangi" on my local Friday Night monster movie show. For a year I wanted to do nothing but make stop motion animated movies. Unfortunately, I have no artistic talent, but that's how I discovered that my life would be tinged forever with regret and the bitter disappointment of my own limitations. Thanks Ray Harryhausen. **** you, you bastard.

    j/k He was a genius!

He was a pioneer and a real titan of the effects industry. Usually when these threads happen I'm only peripherally aware of who the person is, but I know Harryhausen in a big way.

    RIP

Insert complaint about CGI by someone who sees tons of CGI intensive movies.

It should say something that the original Clash Of The Titans not only holds up today but is a better movie than the modern version.

It's more likely that he'll rise from it as a sword wielding skeleton.

I remember seeing Jason and the Argonauts in the theater and being mesmerized by his work and while I don't really remember the actors from that movie his name always stayed with me. Anytime his name was attached to a movie I had to see it. I can still watch his work and love it.

    Bye Harry and thanks.

A great effects pioneer and masterful model maker. I went to an exhibition not long ago of many of his monsters, fine work given the time the movies were set in.

    RIP

Wow. I thought he'd passed away years ago. I clicked on this thread expecting it to have been bumped.

The greatest pioneer of visual effects. His work made movies, and changed the way they were made. RIP

Next time you watch the Kenobi/Grevious duel from ROTS, get a copy of "Golden Voyage of Sinbad" and see how the fight with the six-armed statue of Kali still holds up, by comparison.

Yep. As a kid I was almost as fascinated at the skill it took physically to create stop-motion special effects ("Go Motion" by the time ROTJ was out) as I was by how much fun I remember that movie being.
