Actually, I wonder if physical checks are destined to become a thing of the past, like cassette and video tapes. You know that picture of the cassette tape and #2 pencil, with the quote along the lines of kids not knowing the connection between the two? Another example, brought up at work a few years ago - this generation most likely has no idea why calling someone is referred to as "dialing" the number. Well, given the growing importance of auto-payments, bank transfers, check cards, credit cards, paypal... to be honest, I can see how written paper checks might head the way of video tapes at some point.

Certainly anyone who writes checks needs to be responsible for knowing how the whole thing works. But while I remember learning how to write checks in school - literally, we had class time on it in elementary school - I bet instruction has long since fallen by the wayside.Likely the student in this example has so little knowledge of writing checks because they have little experience dealing with finances at all. But I can see a day coming when phrases like "outstanding check" are just like "dialing a number".

 

I hadn't thought about the "dialing a number" thing. We didn't get instruction in writing checks until high school.

 

I have a rotary phone, actually, more than one come to think of it......
