Split from the PERSONS Interview thread.

I actually have a tanky 8th level fighter in Pathfinder with 1h bastard sword. From memory with power attack I'm +12 to hit (+15/+10 base), 2d10 + 14 (+1d6 cold from an enchant). Crit 17-20.

With 30 AC and STR and CON 18 (97 HP) I want to get in early, hit hard, and spend the rest of the fight annoying my GM by not being hit or occasionally saying "Nah, I'll full defence" whilst the ranged and melee whittle away.

Well, then, I'm going to win since I was playing Star Wars and blasters > tanks...

You're playing d20, probably Saga, though, so I would just laugh from the standpoint of a superior game.

You do have the FFG games right?

If your GM isn't getting angry at the Wizard or Cleric I'm forced to conclude those players are doing something really, really wrong.

Edit: Also you could probably be doing objectively better overall with a similar build on a spring attack Barbarian yo.

F Saga. RCRB all the way.

And no, I haven't had a group in a very long time, certainly longer than FFG has had the license, so haven't bought anything. If we start up, I've heard excellent things about it.

    Cleric? Wizard?

    Please.

We started with me as fighter, an alchemist (because OP), a ninja, and a druid. Alchemist could brew CLW pots. So we had haels.

But then they got wiped out and I didn't and like nuffies they rerolled... an archer, and 2 paladins.

I have nothing except the fact I'm hard to kill and hit hard.

Hey, this thread is finally fun! My 20th lvl cleric/fighter with a Girdle of Frost Giant Strength appears, wielding his meteorite metal +4 sword of sharpness and a large blond mustache. Who will buy him a tankard of Greyhawkian ale?

I found this shoehorn, Howamisupposedto Workintheseconditions. I think it's yours and you were using it on this conversation.

You multiclass away from a pure CoDzilla build and you want a reward? Nah man, nah.

That explains it a bit better, then. I do wonder why your GM would ever get frustrated at y'all surviving if they're planning encounters around that party composition, though. Hard enough to balance around without wiping.

I also have a portable hole that connects to the Seventh Level of Hell. Just sayin'.

I wanted to go ranger originally because in Pathfinder they're not abjectly terrible, but went fighter (a bit yawn) because the party needed one. And then you know, any talk of synergy was just abandoned.

I hate minmaxers. I have a pretty balanced spread of stats, no negatives (you always get someone who dump-stats CHA then gets upset when people treat them like dirt). I took skills which fit the backstory. And players tsk tsk because suboptimal build.

This is why FFG system > d20.

Diggy, you sound a lot like your wife there.

To be fair it's not the most outrageous opinion to have in the context of DnD specifically, Arneson and Gygax didn't exactly go out of their way to hide all the wargame detritus.

I actually did a thought exercise with RCRB at one point and did "characters against type" -- like a Gamorrean Tech Specialist / Hacker, etc.

Sure. But my introduction really was WEG, not D&D, so I'm more about playing a Person what exists in this world.

Have either of you tried 5th ed? I was so put off by D&D 4th WoWed that I haven't been back.

I've heard about as many good things about 5E as I have about FFG Star Wars.

I have, briefly: I actually was part of the open beta. It felt like a rules-light streamlined AD&D, not as prone to mathematical abuse as 3.X, not as balanced to the point of losing all flavor as 4e. It really gives the power back to the DM, moves away from needing miniatures (but has a robust set of rules if you like the tactical approach) and, even though I doubted they could pull it, it does have things to make sure most generations of players can play the kind of character they want (fighters, for example, can be as OD&D simple or 4E complex as you want). Oh, and it's the best DMG they've ever published, and I own every single one of them.

If I ever get back to directing fantasy, that will be my choice.
