Yeah, but that's long enough for impressionable kids to have grown up and reinforced bad habits in the core ruleset. Twice. It's kind of baked-in at this point, which is why I think DnD-inspired offshoots (Well, the ones that aren't heartbreakers going for "But what if there were more rules and also you were a level 2 **** Farmer?!") are maybe where there's more promise.

    Ah, that makes sense.

I lurked a lot back when The Forge was active, but I was never a member. They took their GNS model too seriously (although I still think that it's good that someone tried to go all Scott McCloud on RPGs), but I got some really valuable ideas from the place. And I'm just a sucker for indie RPGs with "cool" mechanics, what can I say.

Did you ever pick up Spycraft, daveeed?

    Their chase mechanics were brilliant.

You mean Moradin, or someone else I wasn't aware of?

I thought Moridin was Rodney Thompson?

He used to do SWRPG network with a guy who called himself Armage Bedar, who was on the AOL SWRPG mailing list with me and Genghis12 back in the late 90s.

Ya, Moradin -- wasn't he heavily involved in Spycraft?

Oh yeah, he was. He was heavily involved in the d20 Star Wars line. Plus, well, he was part of the main D&D 5E design team.

I think Spycraft was his first "real" main thing; then helped with Saga after.... I may be mixing up my timelines somewhat. He was a good egg.

No, he didnt' work on Spycraft 1.0. Maybe 1.5 or 2.0, but not the core book.

He did work on d20 Modern - that might be what you were thinking?

It was at least 1.5, but I'd thought he did some work on 1.0. And that was his first big thing if I'm reading the timelines right.

So dorks, if I were to start a campaign centered on a starfighter squadron, which system do you think would work better?

I've heard the minis for FFG, especially what we saw at C-A, are (no pun intended) out of this world. Obvs, d20 RCRB worked fine, but my guess is that if you've moved to FFG that's probably good.

Yeah, but the minis don't really support RPG-style game, with character advancement and all of that.

I wasn't a big fan of the way RCRB worked (even though it was a vast improvement over the original d20 and the maneuvers were great), D6 is too abstract to center a whole campaign on it (unless heavily house ruled, which is not a bad idea), and I have no idea how EoE starfighter combat is!

FFG. But don't use the minis rules, or my god you'll chew through party members like crazy.

(I'm aware people say cray cray, I bloody well won't).

What I would suggest though is that if you're running an FFG game - the players need to be weened of the Kill 'Em All D&D mentality.

Combat, in the FFG system, is like the movies. And remember how in WEG, when you were still new, Stormtroopers meant this?:

Yes, well, I don't care if you've got 50 earned XP under your belt, it's still RUN AWAY.

So, Leia gets shot once int he arm and she's like "**** this guys, I'm out. I'm out!" and that's pretty much FFG combat. But that's ok because rarely do the movies chars have a standing battle. They mostly just run away and shoot over their shouulders.

I <3 FFG so much but if your players think they can tank (laughs haughtily)

I always used a battlemat, so that made things a little easier.

And you can do somewhat what MechWarrior did -- which is to use the RPG elements out of the 'mechs, and then the straight BattleTech rules and maps/minis while doing the fights themselves (using the characters pilot/gunnery skills).

double penetration, have you played X-Wing? Each session will be a reroll for at least 60% of the party.

I guess I'll look around and do some research, and see how easy is to do that (I still own my very old BattleTech box, sniffle).

And I'm totally splitting all of these posts into an official RPG thread. Damn right.
