YAY! We have our own discussion thread. :D

I know that each of us as K/J writers and readers go for a certain element in fics that we read or write that we either enjoy the most or we do the best. Which element do you think, as a writer, do you enjoy the most or are the best at?

Personally I think I am good at H/C romance. I proved that in the first story of my series The Depths of the Heart when I wrote an entire story around Jaina feeling Kyp's pain and going insane over it. Then again I think I managed to show it in Insanity when Kyp went in search of Jaina. Even in something as fluffy as Just a Kiss I dealt with H/C, though not on the same level as Pain.

    What about everyone else?

I don't know, actually. I'm inclined to say "angst".

Personally, I tend to write angst. I find this really, really strange, all things considered. But I enjoy killing off characters, and I really enjoy playing around with AU scenarios. For some reason, I'm not inclined to write AU "What-if-Kyp/Jaina-had-done-this-instead" fics (Though I sure do read them!!). Rather, I tend to write AU what would happen after all of the books if someone died?

That's inspired way too many plotbunnies, really.

I also like fics - both reading and writing - where there is banter and that weird teasing relationship they have. Kyp and Jaina, in canon, are friends and "partners, whatever that means". I really don't see that pattern changing, no matter what else happens.

Besides, it's all about the tension, really.

    Fantastic thread :).

I think I?ve written more romantic stories on these boards (A/A, A/T, K/J etc), but I find that I prefer (psycho) angst and horror. I love making a reader think about a peculiar story. I have a K/J vignette idea written down on the pad next to me, but the words aren?t coming to me. It?s what I?d classify as ?white coat? strange.

I love writing stories that scare and unsettling angst. I?m a fan of horror movies, but they need to have a plot and not show gore without a purpose. I?m thinking about writing a WR (EDIT: SW) K/J version of Event Horizon ? my favourite sci-fi/horror movie.

I also agree with Saber about good banter and a teasing relationship. That defines K/J, I believe.

a WR K/J version of Event Horizon

Event Horizon *shudder* I saw that once and have nightmares. Most horror movies give me nightmares. So do some books. I have a very, very vivid imagination, so I can picture things way too clearly, plus remember them forever.

But I'd be interested in that one, Ams. :)

    One more thing. What's "WR"?

Oops, that?s a typo. I must have been thinking of something else when I said ?WR?. I meant SW.

That movie also gave me nightmares the first time I saw it on television. The plot continued to intrigue me, so I couldn?t resist buying the DVD (despite the fact we don?t get any extra features :(). I?m not a big fan of horror movies like ?Nightmare on Elm Street? (which is playing on our box tonight). I don?t like the usual ?bad guy appears, hunts down people, horror and gore result, and people die before the monster is incapacitated?.

I?ll have to consider this plot some more if I?ve got an audience for that type of story. Thanks :).

Well...I'm really quite new to writing fan fiction (although an old hand at writing), and whatever I write, I'm really into dialoge. I can't stand it when people use too many words that detract from the story, or make their people talk like narrators instead of people. So I guess I would say that I like dialogue, and I think I'm pretty good at writing it.

I'm also a sucker for mush...gotta love mush, in any form :D

I don't really know what sort of Kyp/Jaina fics I tend toward writing, since I've really only got the one, but we'll see, I guess! As for reading...I'm not picky, I'll read just about everything K/J! (And this from a converted J/Jer :D)

    Great thread. :D

Hmm. Well, I don't know if I say I write K/J angst. Perhaps a more accurate word would be ?drama.? Because most of my fics aren't really cry-your-heart-out type stories (not that there's anything wrong with those; in fact, I really do fancy reading them), I tend to concentrate on the playful side of their relationship. Like Saber said earlier, that?s really what defines K/J.

But of course, they both have their dark sides to them, which is perfect inspiration for me. I?m enamored by their characters, that they both have that pride and that willfulness, but they also have that weakness about them that still resides in their hearts. They?re both angry, in their own way, but they know that that emotion has to be tamped down and contained. Kyp?s still angry at himself for his past sins, and Jaina?s angry at those who killed her loved ones and quite possibly at herself for surviving. Perhaps it isn?t obvious, but I?ve always noticed that bitterness that they both hold.

And that bitterness is vented out in their brashness and their impetuousness. Which is actually kind of ironic, because when Jaina?s not keeping a very cool head, Kyp is; when it?s Kyp?s turn to be stupid, somehow Jaina is doing just the opposite. It?s kind of this give-and-take relationship they have; they seem to pacify the other, keeping things balanced and even.

So it?s fun to explore these so many different aspects of their relationship. Sometimes it?s so lighthearted that their banter is just hilarious; sometimes it?s so somber that darkness pervades the entire scene. It?s sort of like a prism?it?s all one piece, but there are just so many different sides of it to delve into. It?s complicated?master/student? Comrade/confidante? Partners? Friends? Prospective lovers?

I was really disappointed that the NJO books didn?t look at the K/J side of things a bit more. I can remember four instances when the authors actually mentioned the romantic side of their bond, whether bluntly or by implication. Dark Journey, Rebel Dream, Ylesia, and The Unifying Force. In every instance, though (except the first one), Jag?s somehow involved in it. Which just irked me to no end, of course. I mean, James Luceno was the only person who actually portrayed The Colonel as something more human and less 2D, but by TUF I had already loathed his character enough for me to have not cared. In fact, the very reason why I became a K/J shipper was because I had disliked Jag so much that I simply refused to picture him with Jaina and looked for other alternatives. Kyp was that alternative.

Digressing, though, I suppose I should be off now. This is a rather long ranting as it is ;) So yeah, whether it be happy K/J mush or really dark side evil K/J mush, I'll take it. :p

I totally agree with what Den said about them complimenting each other. I think that a major part of their relationship is balancing each other out-- even when we're talking their non-romantic relationship. Kyp's the one to calm down Jaina when she's Dark Side; Jaina's the one to make Kyp think about what he's done at Serpidal. To me, they're balance and counter-balance for each other, canceling out the other's anger/stupidity/angst. They keep each other sane.

Good point, Den. Might have inspired a fic in there, somewhere.

    Dialogue... banter... I like writing that. I think I write too much of it sometimes, though, and forget the actual plot. XD;
    or something...

I have nothing very constructive to add to this thread, though.
Except for a bunch of songs that people could use for song fics. :p

the Full Metal Achemist ending, Kesenai Tsumi (Inerasable Sin) - lyrics here
lyrics are kinda.. strangely worded.. since it's translated from Japanese, but I really think it fits.

Snow Patrol - Ways and Means lyrics
I did have a vague plot bunny for this, but it disappeared. *sigh*
Of course, you may want to use a euphemism for the third line... heh.

Aqualung - Easier to Lie lyrics
This is a little general, but could work, ne?

And if you're in the mood for a parody, there's always Snow Patrol - Starfighter Pilot
    :D

There were more, but I'm not on my laptop right now and can't remember them...
*sings "Jaina's a starfighter pilot" quietly to herself*

^_^ Glad to be of service!
You realise you now have to PM me when you write them, right?

Psst - Kesenai Tsumi is the first FMA ending theme, by the way... the second isn't as good.
.... no, this is not a blatant promotion of Full Metal Alchemist, I swear.

Also, all the songs in my "Surprise" story would work as song fics (IMO), so you can use them too...

Badly Drawn Boy - Something to Talk ABout (lyrics)
Franz Ferdinand - Auf Achse (lyrics)
    Blink 182 - Violence (lyrics)
    Snow Patrol - Chocolate (lyrics)
    Maroon 5 - Shiver (lyrics)

And I think there were a couple tracks on the Keane album that'd be good... Maybe even "She Has No Time", though it works better for a... um... different couple.

I think I'm going to have to write one to "Chocolate". :p

Okay, guys, remember, there are 9 (nine) days left until the challenge closes.

. . . though the challenge will probably roll over to July if there are no entries. I don't want to have to think of a new one. :p

On another note, inspired by several other threads here in Resource . . . we're going to do author interviews. These are for K/J authors. If you have an author you'd like interviewed, nominate them here or in a PM to myself (please don't nominate yourself, though). Suggestions for questions are also welcome, though I will be coming up with a final list of questions once people start getting nominated.

    How this will work is:

    1. Someone nominates an author.

    2. I PM the author, asking if they'd like to be interviewed.

    3. If they consent to the interview, I will send them the question.

    4. They will have a standard week to answer the questions (and provide links to stories, if they wish), and send the interview back to me.

    5. I'll post the interview here and link to the interview in the first post in this thread.

    How's that sound?

First up for interviews . . . JainaDurron, a.k.a. Jilly!

Question: Where in the world are you located? if you could live somewhere else, where would you live?
Answer: I live in Southwest Lower Michigan in USA. I want to move up around the Detroit area, though I am looking for a job in various other places around the country. If I ever have a lot of money, I'd like to also have a home in Australia.

Q: How long have you been a "Star Wars" fan?
A: I guess you could say since I was born since I grew up with it.

Q:How long have you been a member of the boards?
A: Almost 2 years. I joined in August of 2002.

Q: Where did you get your username?
A: With being a K/J shipper and I feel they just belong together, I used Jaina's married name.

Q: How long have you been into writing? How did you get into it?
A: Wow, I've been writing since I was about 7, but fanfic I started at age 12 in the Garrison's Gorillas fandom. My mom used to print a fanzine with her friends and I got into reading fanfic. Eventually I submitted my first story to her zine. It wasn't until I got heavily into the Magnificent Seven fandom that I got back into writing fanfic pretty steadily. I'm also working on an original manuscript.

Q: What's your favourite method of writing? When do you do most of your writing?
A: My method of writing varies. I don't have a favorite. My writing is pretty sporadic. Sometimes I have to have total quiet and not be online to write.

Q: What do you do when you have writer's block?
A: I take a break and do other things. Generally if I get my mind working on other things it allows my creativity to replenish when it comes to writing. Then I can come back and pick things up again with new ideas.

Q: When did you become a K/J 'shipper? How did you become one?
A: I became a K/J shipper when I read the first NJO book. I saw the interaction between Kyp and Jaina after Jaina flew in Lando's Folly and my mind clicked onto it and what if sprang to mind.

Q: How many stories do you have on the boards, past and present?
A: I have a total of 24 fics right now that are actually posted, but with tons of other ideas coming up.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration from?
A: Various things. Songs mostly but also watching TV shows or reading other things.

Q: In "Like Daughter, Like Mother", you're writing about eight women who are pregnant at the same time. Tell us a little about why you chose that?
A: Originally Like Daughter, Like MOther was just going to deal with Leia finding out she was pregnant again when Jaina became pregnant with her first child with Kyp. It was inspired by seeing previews for Father of the Bride 2 on TV and a plot bunny hit. I don't know what suddenly hit me to have eight women pregnant at the same time, but I kept thinking how can I make this any wilder and manage to make people not only laugh but really feel for all the characters. I think that's why Shada and Talon's twisted relationship in light of their impending parenthood has become the angst of my story.

Q: What was your inspiration for "Depths Of The Heart"?
A: Actually the main thing that inspired me for Depths of the Heart was the first paragraph in Pain. It came into my head and it just snowballed from there. Sudden ideas would come to me, including pairing up Jag and Tahiri, and those snowballed as well. As Pain got longer and longer and more ideas came out of it, it slowly evolved into a series dealing with the different aspects of everyone's lives that stemmed from this painful situation that Kyp found himself in and Jaina found herself dealing with the idea of losing him before she ever knew what it truly meant to have him.

Q: What authors influence you? What are your favourite stories?
    A: SaberBlade, Amidala_Skywalker, DantanaSkywalker, JediMasterKobe, -Tenel-Ka-, YodaKenobi

My favorite stories are all K/J, but I also find myself gravitating towards -Tenel-Ka-'s J/TK series as well as Yo
