As you all know the first anthology film, Rogue One, comes out next year at the same time TFA came out. Do you think it will perform similarly to TFA? Less because it is not an Episodic Film? Will the GP know the difference between an Episodic Film and this? Will it perform like a Marvel solo super hero film? Or like The Avengers? Discuss!

It won't make as much as TFA, but it'll definitely be a big hit, especially if marketed right like TFA. I can easily see an 100+ million weekend for it, and probably around 300 million domestically, probably even cracking a billion worldwide.

Depends on Vader, but it'll be a drop although it would be unsurprising to see it rival 2016's biggest hits. I think it will at least make more money in China thanks to Donnie Yen (and after TFA's release building the franchise overseas).

Ep8 is when we can see more records being broken again (40th anniversary, summer OW, perhaps including 3D marathon tickets of the saga and a simultaneous China release). Plus the audience will be even hungrier to see what happens next, it might as well be the third film in terms of anticipation. Neither TPM or ANH ended on such a cliffhanger

I am pretty confident with my guess to because I think TFA will make about 2 billion and I think a lot of people won't be as interested in Rogue One.

I honestly have no idea. At a stab in the dark, I'll say an OW of ~$150m with maybe $450m domestic gross.

Traditionally SW hasn't performed as well abroad as most popcorn fare, but the industry has changed a lot in recent years. Pumping out a film every year is ultimately going to lead to diminishing returns, but fatigue shouldn't be much of a factor for R1. I think a lot of it will boil down to how hard they push Vader in the marketing. Goodwill from TFA should carry over strongly, although some of the general audience is going to be confused when they discover it's not picking up from the current film. I'm hopeful it can crack a billion, tho it should clear 800 mil.

Do you guys think it will confuse the GP? Will the confusion effect Episode 8 negatively?

Hmmm... my daughter came out of TFA on a big buzz. She loved it.
"Only one year to find out what happens next!"
"Uh, no. The next movie isn't Episode 8." and off I went mansplaining the situation to her.

    She was rather disappointed.

This is going to be interesting.

I've seen other people confused about it. They are going to have to be very explicit in advertising the movie that it is an anthology.

I expect Rogue One to be great. Though I doubt it will break $500 million world wide.

What do you mean "peak". Overall? Or for the Star Wars franchise?

For the whole franchise. I don't think any SW film from now on will make as much as TFA will.

I say it will approach $475 million domestic and top just over 1 billion world wide. I don't think it will garner the same amount of repeat viewings that are driving the box office for TFA.

Hmm…depends entirely on the marketing. A part of me wishes they had waited til the ST was complete before moving on the anthologies.

But, the larger side of me says: bring them on!

It seems like they are trying to keep Star Wars on the forefront of every moviegoers mind. A la Marvel.

Oh I know why they're doing it. I'm not against a SW movie every year. That is awesome! But, if we start getting clunkers, then I will question it. Kennedy even said in a recent interview they might eventually get up to two SW films a year.

That's like a dream come true as a fan.

But I also know that in real life you can have too many irons in the fire so to speak. You can spread yourselves too thin.

So call me cautiously optimistic going forward.

The only SW film I really question the wisdom of is the Young Han Solo film.
