Twenty-six months have passed since the Battle of Geonosis and the start of the Clone Wars. Major Nick Rostu's 44th Division, also known as "Rostu's Renegades", have proven themselves on the battlefields of Bassadro, Ando, Atraken, and many other worlds alike, but now they face their most difficult fight yet. Wom-Nii Gnaden, the Jedi General in charge of the army to which Rostu's Renegades are attached, has been captured by Separatist forces on the field of battle. Republic High Command has refused to authorize a rescue mission, and ordered that the enemy's base be destroyed by orbital bombardment as soon as possible to prevent them from transmitting any secrets they can extract from General Gnaden back to Count Dooku.

You are members of an elite team of specialists assembled by Major Rostu, charged with immense task of going behind enemy lines and rescuing Jedi General Gnaden. The major has promised to do all he can to delay the destruction of the enemy base, but his influence is limited: time is of the essence if you wish to succeed and escape with your lives. You may be troopers, sappers, grenadiers, snipers, or medics. You may have been assigned to the 44th Division when you enlisted to fight the Separatists, joined up with them when they arrived to liberate your homeworld, or even been sought out by them and hired for whatever skills you can bring to the fight. The 44th Division contains no clones. Where the army expects obedience, you have independence. Where the army expects uniformity, you have individuality. The fate of the entire campaign may rest in your hands. Good luck.

    The Era

More than two years have passed since the beginning of the Clone Wars. Operation Durge's Lance, the Separatist incursion into the Core Worlds under the command of the fearsome General Grievous, has ground to a halt. The destruction of Humbarine and the annihilation of the entire human population of the Weemell sector have enraged the Republic's populace, and Supreme Chancellor Palpatine is more than willing to grant their desire for Separatist blood. Republic forces lay siege to Commenor and Balmorra to weaken the Separatist foothold in the Core, while a third army descends on the small world of Moorja, in the Inner Rim, to open up a back door to the Corellian Trade Spine for the Republic's troops and to limit the Separatists' avenues of escape. Rostu's Renegades, renowned for their unconventional skills and abilities, have been attached to this campaign due to Moorja's unique environment and the need for troops experienced in fighting under adverse conditions.

Welcome to Moorja (pre-occupation population: 1,420,700). Possessing fertile green farmland and desolate purple badlands in equal measure, Moorja is a world of multiple coexisting extremes. Large-scale agricultural and mining operations exist side-by-side, both rendered far more difficult than they ought to be by one of Moorja's more unique natural features: ion storms. Name: Jai Hespera

    Age: 21

    Gender: Female

    Species: Human

    Homeworld: Sirona

Occupation: Sniper the 44th Division, formerly an assassin

Appearance: 1.73 m tall, slender, pale, shoulder-length black hair

Biography: She was born on Sirona, a small colony world in the Southern Quadrant. She led a normal colonist?s life, helping around the farm. Like many young people from such a background, she was taught by her father how to fire a rifle. While he claimed she was a natural, she never really relished a kill while hunting. Then, everything changed. When she was 14, slavers came to her homeworld, taking the women and killing the men. It was as if a switch had been pulled. She killed many times that day, sapient beings, not animals. And yet she felt no distaste at this. They had killed her family, killed her friends, burned her home. And they would pay. The slavers never found her, but she found 37 of them.

But the damage had been done. Her life was in shambles, her psyche wrecked. She wandered through the Rim, making a living with the only thing left to her: her rifle. Soon, for those who dealt in such things, the reputation of Jai Hespera?s aim put her in high demand for those who needed obstacles removed.

She worked alone, until she landed a job that sent her to Anaxes to eliminate an important nobleman. The employer insisted that he have one of his men on the mission, who was fully qualified, he assured her. Unfortunately for her, her loner ways were justified, as the spotter sold her out to the authorities. Even more unfortunate for him, he was shot by the ones arresting them. She figured to rot in some cell for the rest of her life, but it wasn?t local law enforcement that captured her. It was a Republic soldier, and not one of those clones she saw on HNN. He was part of a unit of irregulars, he said, under some man named Rostu, and he had come to recruit her. Of course the choice was hers, but he added that he knew some parties onworld that were very interested in her, something to do with some recent commotion. No choice at all, really. And so Jai joined the army, although she still had little experience dealing with people.

Possessions: Blackhand Annihilator pistol, Xerrol M-98 mass accelerator sniper rifle, Nightview macrobinoculars, comlink headset, combat knife

    Name: Corporal Talnar
    Age: 31
    Gender: Female
    Species: Khil
    Homeworld: Belnar
    Occupation: Soldier
Appearance: Green gray skin, no hair, pointy ears, tentacles below the nose (so a typical Khil?what haven?t you seen one before skyboy?), and the sort of buff but not bodybuilder kind of physique that most soldiers have.
Biography: Some days it just feels like everyone forgot that there were actually armed forces before the clones arrived. Aren?t they just so special, trained to fight and work together sooooo perfectly. And they?re just sooooooooo handsome too.

That?s pretty much all you need to know about why Corporal Talnar how assigned to the Renegades. She didn?t play nice with the clones and accordingly they didn?t play nice with her. Her COs went for the simple solution of moving her away from the clones?far, far away from them. That was pretty hard to do considering just how many clones there were in the Grand Army of the Republic these days (oh, that?s right, stick a bunch of tank babies in the ranks and all of a sudden it becomes grand. Way to make a girl feel loved) and it meant that she wound up missing all the good battles. You know, the reason she pretty much joined up way back when. This hasn?t helped her appreciation for the clones.

Talnar?s not been a happy girl the last year and a half. She?s a soldier. She?s supposed to fight, not be on milk runs. ?It?s important for the war effort,? they tell her. Sure it is. Why don?t they do it if it?s so frigging important? It?s no surprise her file has a dozen reprimands and disciplinary actions for various minor offenses (?clearly not command material,? as one CO observed). When the call went out for non-clones for Major Rostu?s mission, her CO just about clicked his heels with joy and passed off the Corporal. For her part, she?s pretty kriffing pleased she gets to shoot some Separatist scum, live ones no less. She would have taken droids, but hey, this is just a bonus.

Possessions: She?s got stuff somewhere, but nothing that she?s gonna bring into a war zone, stupid. Standard issue rifle, except a fat lot of good that?s gonna do her with the ion storms.

    Name: Napp
    Age: 48
    Gender: Male
    Species: Feeorin
    Homeworld: Unknown
    Occupation: Grenadier
Appearance: Roughly 2.2 meters tall, Napp has black skin and piercing red eyes that complete the look of a trained warrior who is a formidable opponent on the field of conflict. Large tattoos cover both arms, most of them unidentifiable to those around him because of personal meaning. He has large muscles that allow him to be effective in throwing grenades, and can easily clean the clocks of organic troops in hand-to-hand combat with his trunk-like arms. His battle tunic, which he usually wears even off the battlefield in case he feels threatened, is a dull gray color, with quite a few side pockets for weapons, important battle plans, or small trophies he has collected. He wears brown combat boots and cut-off portion of a jumpsuit to add some pockets on his legs in which to store extra war material. The tendrils on his head have streaks of green in them, and one has a slightly singed end when it got in the way of a blaster bolt years before.

Biography: Napp has no idea where he was born. Raised by a smuggler in the Outer Rim, he went through various training regimens as a child in order to become an effective warrior. This is where he first learned to shoot a blaster, and as he progressed in years, his accuracy became better. At the age of 17, Napp was an accomplished smuggler, helping his comrades during their smuggling runs by protecting their flank from enemy forces. At 24, he had purchased a small ship and started his own smuggling runs, although he still boasts that he stole the ship from its owner instead of having paid for it.

As Napp did occasional smuggling jobs, he confined himself to his on-ship cabin, where he had installed a small weight room to build up muscle. Through rigorous training, he began to bulk up quite a bit, which brought him extra notoriety in mercenary forces in the Outer Rim territories. When one of these forces approached him about joining, Napp was at first apprehensive. Being a mercenary didn?t allow him to go solo like he felt he was capable of. Howeve,r the pay was too good to resist, and he enlisted in the force. It was here that Napp was converted from a soldier in a mercenary army to a grenadier because of his massive bulk and amazing throwing accuracy with ranged weaponry, particularly throwing knives to pin single opponents on a tree trunk so they could be easily captured and interrogated.

Around the age of 35, Napp realized that the force was starting to use him far too much for their own gain instead of his own. In a daring escape, he killed three fellow soldiers as he stole back his ship from the mercenary hanger bay and sped off into the stars, never to return to the force. Ever since then, he has built a reputation of being a handful on the battlefield. However, he has also become a very self-centered individual, willing to let someone else die if it meant he could easily escape. This attribute, common in all of his species, is very apparent in Napp, and he feels it makes him an effective mercenary/smuggler.

It was many years later that Napp was contacted to join a force led by Major Nic Rostu, A.K.A. the 44th Division. The force was going to be used in the Army of the Republic, fighting against the CIS in the Clone Wars. Napp agreed to join the fight, hoping to find something of value on the battlefield that he could keep as a memento and something to show off, and also to continually build his already-large reputation. The 44th Division was the only option for him, since he would not be caught dead in any clone units, or volunteer forces. Those groups had their own problems, and he was content to leave them to pick up their mess. He?s only in this for the money and the fame, and that?s not about to change.

Possessions: Weapons: Thermal Detonator Tape, Thermal Detonators (4), Frag Grenades (10), V-6 Haywire Grenades (2), Ion Grenades (2), Proton Grenade (2), DC-15A modified blaster rifle with an under-barrel Grenade Launcher attachment, DL-44 Heavy Blaster Pisto

    Age: 37
    Gender: Male
    Species: Rodian
    Homeworld: Coruscant
Occupation: Field Medic, retired Bounty Hunter
Appearance: A large red birthmark covers most of his head and shoulders, however the rest of his body is green like a typical Rodian. 1.4 Meters tall. Rather rotund.
Biography: Octro's father was a once successful bounty hunter, who, after being wounded near fatally, had the money to settle in a nice home on Coruscant. There he raised Octro with his dancer mother. Octro did exceptionally well in school, although often being repremanded for his backtalk and nasty wit. He made it to medical school where he barely scraped through, as he was often picking up spare jobs as a bounty hunter on the side.

At about 31, Octro was hunting a bounty on a small government official, some Ithorian senator. When he found the woman she was on her way to a shuttle she was accompanied by two Repulic Troopers. Moving quickly he took them out with two shots, however when the woman turned around he was transfixed. She was beautiful. Octro lowered his weapon without really thinking. The senator shot him in the leg with a concealed blaster, and walked to her shuttle as if nothing happened.

Octro rethought his life the next day, hung up the bouty hunting jacket and took on the doctor's field full force. When he realised the Republic would need assistance in the war on the Sepratists, he rushed out to join them.

Possessions: DT-57 heavy blaster pistol with extra range scope, two vibroscalpels, one laser scalpel, two laser cauterizers, backpack full of bandages and bacta products, two thermal detonators, and a small punch-dagger.

"Could you repeat that, lieutenant?" he asked with a grimace as he cast aside the remains of his smoking, now-useless datapad. The rumble of thunder was still echoing in his ears. MicroData Technologies had promised his superiors that the Versafunction88 could withstand the interference of anything up to and including a military-grade ion bomb, but Major Nick Rostu was slowly discovering that they, like so many others, had vastly underestimated the sheer hatred Moorja seemed to have for anything electronic in nature. That had been his twelfth datapad this week.

"The troopers you requested have arrived, sir." The Gran standing stiffly at attention in front of him was one of several men he had chosen to serve as couriers. Communication systems on this planet could be unreliable under even the most ideal conditions, and he could hardly justify the risk of putting his faith in them when it came to things as vital as military strategy and the lives of his men. Couriers weren't as secure a method as he would have preferred, but it was still better than having to guess whether or not the being on the other side heard him, or whether his message had been hopelessly garbled in transition.

In a way, it almost reminded him of home. The purple terrain that stretched out everywhere as far as the eye can see could hardly have been a more alien sight, but this world's rejection of anything more advanced than a simple club was something he understood very well, even if the science behind it was different. It was making his life absurdly difficult, and the mere thought of trying to run a military campaign under such conditions gave him a headache, but it also made him glad that he was the one who had been placed in command, and not some clone who had no idea how to command when his holograms disappeared and his helmet went dark. As a point in favor of his opinion, he'd noted that clone casualties were already reaching levels many considered unacceptable for this campaign.

"Good. You can go, lieutenant," Rostu waved the courier away as he turned his attention back to the matter at hand. Wom-Nii Gnaden, his commanding officer. Well, at least he had been, until a week ago. Eager to end the bloodbath that this campaign was fast becoming, the Cerean Jedi had led an expedition to strike at what had looked to be a weak point in the enemy lines. Satellite imagery had been unavailable due to one of the world's frequent ion storms passing over the area, and there had been no choice but to go in blind and count on the enemy being caught unaware. Rostu hadn't liked the plan, but the pressure from above to make significant, visible progress was increasing with every day that passed without territory gained.

He'd lost a lot of good people to that trap, including his commanding officer. Before then, Rostu would never have guessed that a Jedi could be taken alive by anyone but another Jedi, but he trusted the eyes of his scouts. Gnaden had been captured, and high command had been in an uproar ever since they received his report. Gnaden's status as a Jedi General gave him access to all sorts of vital intelligence that could endanger the entire Core campaign if it fell into Separatist hands. Or claws. Or talons. Or pincers. Appendages. Not to mention the blow it would deal to morale when word got out that one of the warrior-monks had not just lost a battle, but been taken prisoner in the process.

Worse, still, they had no idea where he was now, other than that technological limitations meant that he had to be somewhere in the planetary capital, if he was even still alive. Certain officers up the chain of command were already advocating the complete destruction of the city by orbital bombardment just to be sure that the general remained silent, and the plan was gaining support among both the upper and lower echelons disturbingly quickly. As soon word of it had reached him, Rostu had directly petitioned the Sector Army's commander to be allowed to launch a r

The more the Major talked, the more the tentacles that hung from Talnar?s mouth fluttered. She wasn?t flustered. She certainly wasn?t scared.

    She was excited.

Which was to say that this was a sorry reflection on the state of Corporal Talnar?s life. She?d joined the Army to defend the Republic and when real fighting began she?d been sidelined for the clones. Well there wasn?t a clone in sight and that made the Khil?s heart jump for joy. Unfortunately, it also meant there wasn?t a decent battle to be found. The clones got the full scale engagement. She got the cloak-and-dagger ?oh let?s not make too much noise or people might start shooting at us? mission.

Go get a POW, bring the POW back. No ?blow up a target of strategic value? or ?slaughter thousands of dirty Separatists.? It would have to do. Heck, what was she thinking? It was going to do just fine. She was going to get to kill some Separatists.

Khil. Kill. Khil. Kill. Khil. Kill. Khil. Kill. Khil. Kill.

Talnar couldn?t wait for this briefing to be over.

?Any questions?? the Major finally asked.

Talnar shook her head, her tentacles wafting gently in the process. No reliable intel. One contact on the inside. Subpar equipment. Yeah, real dream job this was. No need to muddy the air with pointless words. She did, however, wait to hear what anyone else had to say. After all, this was her team. No point in showing disrespect to the people who were supposed to cover her back?and vice versa.

When everything was finished, Talnar gathered her gear and headed out to where the bikes were parked. She?d already compulsively checked her gear three times. She?d been out of real action so long that she was afraid she?d forget something. She wasn?t about to admit it to anyone else, but it was the truth. Forgetting the wrong thing was going to be the difference between her getting shot and her doing shooting. It was a shame that she was going to have to dump her Republican armor for that Separatist Sithspit. Though, these were mercs?one of them might have splurged on some decent protection and if she was lucky she?d get it.

She felt like she had a literal ton on her though. The slug thrower rifle they?d given her was about the same weight as her standard issue rifle, but the ammo was definitely heavier. A bandolier with clips was slung across her torso, descending from left to right and more was in the pack. She intended to come back much lighter than she returned.

Talnar walked around the bike, inspecting it. She was pretty sure if she looked hard enough she?d find?yep, that was it. So nicely located to the left back side. One good kick would do it.

?Let?s get going. Sooner we find those mercenaries the sooner we can kill them,? Talnar said to the team.

Kill. Khil. Kill. Khil. Kill. Khil. Kill. Khil.

She started the motor, which hummed to life pleasantly. Putting a pair of goggles over her eyes to keep the dust out, Talnar clutched the handles and shot forward across the purple terrain.

Not having a sensor suite on the bike was a major inconvenience. Talnar was having to check the odometer to see if they?d gotten into the mercenaries? patrol range. To be safe, she?d pulled up just short of where she thought the boundary was and signaled the team to do the same.

Allowing the engine to idle, Talnar twisted on the bike to look at the rest of the Renegades. ?There?s two ways we can do this. The quiet way or the fun way. Quiet way takes time, fun way is quick. Preferences??

    IC Octro Bazak

Octro slept through half the mission briefing. He was caught up in a bit of recreational, although profitable, gambling among some other soldiers the night before. He gathered enough from the meeting, they had to go somewhere, kill someone and then find something. It didn't matter much to him. Octro had been with the Republic for quite a while now. Every mission was fairly boring, even the ones that seemed thrilling ended up playing out relatively actionless. He felt like a droid, doing the same sithspit actions over and over again.

    "Any questions?" asked Rostu.

Someone may have asked a question, but Octro wasn't paying much attention. He was getting his things together. He was ready to go jump in a Sarlacc pit because it was better than sitting around here listening to Commander Monotone drone on.

The Khil girl looked like she was about to pee her pants she was so excited. Octro sighed. He knew what kind of trouble she would make.

"Let's get going. Sooner we find those mercenaries the sooner we can kill them," said the girl.

"Oh, good. A trigger happy woman. I'm thrilled," muttered Octro to one of the other soldiers. Although, she was slightly attractive in her own sort of way. Octro had always had a thing for Khil.

Octro was last in the group of speeders. It was better for the group and himself. Who's going to patch up the medic if they get ambushed. The Khil girl, who seemed to be trying to take the lead, slowed down.

?There?s two ways we can do this. The quiet way or the fun way. Quiet way takes time, fun way is quick. Preferences?? asked Talnar.

"Who made you captain of the team? Tattoo over there is oldest, I vote him leader." Octro replied, sitting up straight in his seat. A couple of the soldiers gave him surprised looks. He didn't have the accent of the usual Rodian, he had become completely fluent in Galactic Basic after the constant teasing he sustained during medical school on Coruscant.

"Who made you captain of the team? Tattoo over there is oldest, I vote him leader," the Rodian medic said. What was his name? Something...Rodian. Talran was sure of it. Octro Bazak. That's right. In the list of names to know, medic was a high one. Not that she intended to get shot, but you could bleed out for quite some time with a slug in you.

"Nobody put me in charge," Talran replied, "but I didn't see anyone else jumping up with ideas. Now's the time to hear them. With sensors down in these ion storms, we're flying blind here and I'd prefer for the mercs to be the ones getting caught with their pants down, not us."

Of course there was always Plan B, the guns blazing approach. But Talran wasn't stupid. Plan B meant heavy losses and you didn't win a war with heavy losses when you were a team of five against a planet full of Separatists. She was all for Plan A and if nobody else had any thoughts she at least had a couple ideas.

Talran looked at "Tattoo"...and promptly decided she wasn't going to call him Tattoo unless he asked to be. She wasn't stupid--that Feeorin could kick her butt. In fact, heck, the Rodian made some sense. He might make a decent leader. "If we need someone in command, just make sure it's not someone who's gonna get us killed," Talran said.

Napp sat silently as the Major briefed the squad of Renegades on the upcoming mission. It sounded like they were going on a milk run; surprise surprise on that front. He hadn?t signed up to be stuck on some backwater planet like this with its ridiculous penchant to fry anything technological with ion storms. No, he hated things that leveled the playing field like that. Those damn Seperatists were probably breathing sighs of relief that he wouldn?t be cutting them down with his special weapons anytime soon. It looked like this was going to become a game of waiting; if there was one thing that Napp really despised, it was sitting around doing nothing. Boredom was never a welcome thought in his mind, and he wanted to quickly chase that away.

But boredom was a perfect word to describe how he felt as the Major finished the briefing. ?Identify yourself with the phrase [All Stars Burn As One] when you meet him. I'll make sure you're given his location before you head out." Roscu said. Napp groaned. This was sounding like a recipe for disaster. Whenever a strike team had an undercover agent in enemy territory, and an even dumber passcode, things never went well. Napp knew that something would undoubtedly go wrong; these kinds of missions always screwed up somewhere along the line. He looked around at the other soldiers; there was an excitable Khil, who looked like she was sitting on a hot grenade because she was so tense, a Rodian who just looked too clean to be in there, a four-armed person of a species he had never seen before with a dog-like thing in tow, and a female human who looked as frightening as a twig. Once again it would probably come down to him saving the day, because none of these others looked like the kinds that Napp associated himself with. No, this was not going to be anything like his former smuggler days, where at least his fellows were rather strong and intimidating at first glance. Unless these misfits proved themselves in combat, they were going to get left behind in Napp?s dust. If any of them got in the way . . . well . . . they?d find out quickly enough not to do that. It was wise not to upset a Feeorin, especially one who could pick you apart without a second thought.

?If you can take them out, you should be able to disguise yourselves in their armor? Rostu said. Great, Napp thought, another huge oversight on the Major?s part. Really, had he thought any of this through ahead of time? A school child could come up with a better plan than this. Napp had no intention of using someone else?s armor, especially if it was meant for small sentients compared to him. What was he supposed to do, take armor that might only fit his hand? The others would easily fit, but he would probably end up taking nothing, which suited him just fine. He didn?t need armor to get around. Years of rigorous training had given him skill; snooping around was for cowards who were too afraid to get their hands dirty in combat. But, unfortunately, if he didn?t follow through, he probably wouldn?t get paid, so he had to accept this. If only he actually had some weight in this decision . . .

As the team broke to head to the speeder bikes, Napp checked his equipment. His rifle was slung across his back, his pockets were stuffed with his various grenades and associated products, and he had his trusty side blaster in its holster. Everything was in place as it should be, but if there was something he worried about, it was not getting to use any of it. Although some of his fellows would say that beating your enemy up in hand-to-hand combat was the most enjoyable for someone in his profession, he preferred doing that only when necessary, when his blasters or grenades were ineffective. And on Moorja, that would probably be the only way to win. He hated losing his weapon advantage, but at least the enemy was in the same boat as they were. And sentients were much more fun to punch than mindless droids, even though severing some circuits from th

"Nobody put me in charge," the suddenly defensive girl replied, "but I didn't see anyone else jumping up with ideas. Now's the time to hear them. With sensors down in these ion storms, we're flying blind here and I'd prefer for the mercs to be the ones getting caught with their pants down, not us."

It seemed to Octro she didn't expect to be challenged on her authority. Did she really think that experienced soldiers and--Octro glanced over at Tattoo--thugs were going to be put under command of some Cops & Robbers playing, soldier girl?

Octro didn't honestly care that much, but as he had learned in the past couple of years, the most action you'll usually see on a mission is among your team.

?Well said, Medic. I assume that if no one else speaks up with any other ideas, that makes me the Team Leader due to popular vote.?

Octro laughed aloud. He somewhat liked this guy. These were the kind of people Octro would be in bars after picking up a big bounty and they'd talk the night away. He knew this guy must have had some sort of... interesting background. He was also the kind of guy that would have a nice bounty on his head. He'd killed a few like this guy. This guy must have been a merc. He wasn't here because he cared about the Republic, but then again neither was Octro. Octro really just wanted to kill something and not risk imprisonment by the Republic for it.

"Well, NamelessSoldierNumberOne, I, NamelessMedic, do not speak up as to wanting a position of authority. It's all to you."

OOC: Just a quick mention, but Talnar seems to be the only one with an official military rank at the moment, though you must all (technically) have them. I understand being lax, but keep in mind that she's being extremely generous in not telling you to shut up and get in line.

Yinko stood quietly, waiting for the briefing to begin. He was wearing a pair of black pants and a black tunic. He had his lower arms folded behind him while his upper arms hung at his sides. He had learned early on that species with only two arms were always more comfortable if it looked like he had two arms, even if they knew better.

Yinko examined his team. A human, rather tall for a female but nothing irregular about her. A Rodian who was dozing off. Filth. A strange female with tentacles where her mouth should have been...he did not even know where to begin. And a large Feeorin with tattoos.

The best and brightest of the bottom of the barrel. He told himself.

The mission was simple enough. Smash and grab. The strange weather wouldn't throw him off too bad, his heavy repeaters were already rigged for quarrels instead of power packs. While the quarrels fired slower, they were belt-fed into the rifle so the Ion storms wouldn't knock out his weapons.
Yinko circled his speeder bike. One of the engineers had added two small racks to the sides of the bike to accommodate his big heavy repeating blasters. He secured his weapons, ammo and then heard paw steps behind him.
His sister, Lika, approach. She was a wyrwulf, a six-legged sentient wolf that all Codri-jii started out as. He knelt down as she approached and grabbed her head in his upper hands.

[Codruese]"Keep your eyes and ears open, Lika. We are both going home after this." Yinko said quietly, he bent over and kissed the wolf on the top of her head. Lika responded by licking his face.

Yinko hopped onto the speeder bike, his spear strapped to his back. Lika climbed up behind him, letting a technician strap her in. She was also carrying Yinko's torpedo launcher. A few minutes later he was following the Feeorin towards the occupied city.

    [hr]

After they had come to a stop two of the team members nearly got into an argument over who lead, until the Feeorin took over that role. He asked if anyone would challenge him but when he looked at Bo, he simple shook his head.

Yinko turned his back on the group and took one of his heavy repeaters from the speeder bike. The name 'Winona' was scratch into one of the six barrels. He returned to the group, his lower arms still folded behind his back and Lika quietly walking by his side.

"Whatever we do, we should do it quickly. Once they learn we are here, our job gets a hundred times harder." Yinko said in a hard voice.

That damned fool Gnaden had walked right into it. No intel, insufficient scouting and preparation. His Jedi training might hold for a while, but he had already proved unreliable. He would talk. High Command was right to worry about him. But orbital bombardment was imprecise, especially with the communications difficulties. When Major Rostu had asked for volunteers to extract him, Jai had put herself forward. She wasn?t going to rely on hearsay. She would take care of the general herself.

There was a team. Teams had never really worked out for her. She studied them as they were briefed. A Feeorin. A Codru-ji. Good in close quarters. A Rodian. They had a reputation in the business. A Khil. She looked excitable, but carried her weapon with confidence. They were all comrades, supposedly. But while the Renegades had unrivaled independence and latitude, they could not match the cohesion of the clone units. That was fine with Jai. It was in her best interest to succeed and survive, and she assumed that the others were similarly motivated.

The major went over the mission, including a detail she hadn?t known before. Intel had someone on the ground. Possibly useful. The disguise tactic might or might not work, but at least the major was trying to be helpful. No one had any questions, as usual. They were dismissed, and the squad walked to the speeder bikes. The Khil seemed not merely excitable, but bloodthirsty. They fired up the bikes and sped toward the city.

The Khil stopped, asked how to proceed. ?There?s two ways we can do this. The quiet way or the fun way. Quiet way takes time, fun way is quick. Preferences??

?The quiet way is the fun way,? murmured Jai. Then the Rodian woke the krayt dragon. Leadership. Jai didn?t care to involve herself in the squabble. Besides, with leadership came dependence. The Feeorin took up the mantle. He seemed cool and detached, not like she thought he would be. Good, maybe he wouldn?t get them killed. As they finished, the Codru-ji spoke. "Whatever we do, we should do it quickly. Once they learn we are here, our job gets a hundred times harder."

Sensible. Focused. An asset. Or would be, if he wasn?t bringing his dog on a covert mission. Still, logic was rare. It needed to be nourished. ?How about finding the Separatist mercenaries, for starters?? Jai asked.

?How about finding the Separatist mercenaries, for starters?? the sniper Hespera said.

?Actually?we might be better off if they found us,? Talnar said. This was the fun way she?d been thinking about. ?Nothing blinds a manka cat like running after a nerf. Get the mercs? attention, entice them to give chase, drag them to a place of our choosing, and we can dictate the terms of engagement. With the ion storms they probably don?t have any comm capabilities to call in a lone party. And?? oh she really didn?t want to say this next part, ??I think I make the best target.? She tapped the chevrons on her Army issued armor to make her point. ?I?ll make a ruckus to get their attention, you guys come after me as if you?re pursuing. In the heat of a hunt they?ll just assume you?re more Separatist mercs and join up. I conveniently allow myself to be ?caught? and then we jump them.?

Maybe not the best plan, but since the Republic had kept her cooped up for a while on those freighters Talnar was still getting back in the game a bit. Besides, it was crazy enough it just might work.

?If we?re going to try to use their disguises, we?re going to have to get close to them?no firing blithely away from hundreds of yards out getting their uniforms all riddled?? Talnar said. Her eyes fell on Hespera. Oh sure, call the sniper careless. Great footing to get off on with her. ?Not that you?d ever riddle someone,? Talran corrected.

She looked at Napp. ?It?s got its risks. Then again, there?s always frontal assault, but we probably won?t choose our footing that way. So there?s my bright ideas.?

The lead seemed to settle on Tattoo, although the girl still seemed to be leading the pack strategically. Octro was fine with that, she seemed more intelligent, and Octro would find his uses for the Feeorin.

"One problem," Octro spoke up, "I love the plan. Don't get me wrong, I love the plan. The point of it, however, is to get the Sepratist gear so we appear as Sepratists. You're plan involves them thinking we are Sepratists. See my point? I have a slight change. We draw off one of the mercs so that we can still 'choose our footing'. How we get them to send off one on their own is what I cannot come up with. But once he approaches, we can fire on him and get the others to come up to check it out. We will already have the high ground."

    Somewhere on Moorja . . .

As Napp had expected, his words had brought the firestorm of comments from the other team members. No one had challenged him on the Team Leader bit yet, so he assumed that he had gotten his foot in the door that far. Now, what to do with their plans, considering that none of them quite knew what forces the opposing mercenaries had going for them. Each species had its own limitations, so unless they knew exactly what weapons and armor they each had, it would be hard to plan for an entire group. Wait, he had said . . . we . . . again. No, no more we; it was him, and the rest of the team. There would never be a ?we? as far as he was concerned.

"Well, NamelessSoldierNumberOne, I, NamelessMedic, do not speak up as to wanting a position of authority. It's all to you,? the Rodian said. Good he knew where his place was on this team without a whole lot of hassle needing to be undertaken. Napp never liked having to put people in their place, even though he could easily break the Rodian?s neck if he wanted to. But that wouldn?t be a good strategy for this kind of situation, and plus even he had standards. He may not agree on any other front with someone, but he wouldn?t kill them unless it was for a very good reason. And when he was getting paid to be here on this rock with him, he wasn?t going to do anything adverse. And, just to himself, he found this guy to be a slight comedian. Maybe this guy was someone he would be able to get along with well enough that by the time the mission was over, he wouldn?t have been surrounded by total suckers. Perhaps he knew a few good jokes . . .

Napp dispelled this train of thought from his mind. It wasn?t getting him anywhere, and besides that the others were starting to speak. It was coming rapid-fire, with little time in between sentences for him to really plan his next move. "Whatever we do, we should do it quickly. Once they learn we are here, our job gets a hundred times harder,? said the four-armed agent, once again who Napp had no idea what his name was. Now, this was something else he could agree with; smart soldiers not dawdled. Sitting on one?s laurels in this kind of situation was suicide. If they were found by the opposing force without any planning ahead of time, they would be toast. But, what to do, what to do . . . He was going to let someone else come up with a general plan, and then elaborate on that. It would be painful not to take complete charge here, but he knew that the others were still warming up to him. If they trusted him, he would start reverting back to his usual tactics. Theoretically, as team members, they would start doing things his way. For Napp, his own way was the only way, but at the moment that wouldn?t work quite so well. He needed to play the percentages and take the route of least resistance to get to the goal.

?How about finding the Separatist mercenaries, for starters?? asked the only human on the team. This surprised Napp; humans seemed to be the ones running everything, so it was odd to only have one to deal with. They could never be underestimated in terms of skill and brain, but they always were brash . . . kinda like Napp himself. From the weapon she carried, he guessed that she was a sharpshooter; another good sign there. A good team always had a sniper to keep ground foes at bay while ground assaults went down. As a trained grenadier and bruiser, Napp knew that cover would be essential if they were going to notch victory. There, he had said ?we? again. This was starting to become a disturbing trend. He would have to deal with that at some point after all this was over. Maybe go on a raiding mission by himself to reassert dominance in his life. Or just got to the bar and knock back a couple of drinks. Anything to get the idea of friendship out of his mind.

?Actually?we might be better off if they found us,? the Khil woman said in response. Napp raised an eyebrow; this was sounding like exactly the kind of plan an excitable army recr

Five hundred meters behind where the Republic soldiers discussed their plans, something shifted amidst a rocky outcropping. Had anyone been positioned close enough to see the movement, they might have dismissed it as the mere twitches of a wild animal seeking shelter.

Few of Moorja's native animals were likely to be encased from head to toe in dark violet armor, however.

Poor barves. Just idling out in the open like that. Were they insane? Did they not realize they were on the battlefield? Human, Rodian, something massive, something green, something with four arms, and...a dog?

Not clones, clearly. But not Separatists, either. They hadn't been briefed on any allied units operating in the area, and that made them enemies. If it turned they were working for the Seppies after all, well, friendly fire is just another fact of life in war.

Judging by their body language, they were arguing, but no clear leader could be discerned among them. Well, when in doubt, go for the biggest target.

The sniper raised the scope of his rifle until it touched the visor of his helmet, steadied his aim, and squeezed the trigger.

Napp had explained his plan to the rest of the group. It sounded like a simple enough plan . . . well, at least as simple as one could make it out on the field of combat. Hopefully they could all follow something like that. If not, they were all in real trouble.

As he waited for them to comment on the plan, he thought he could hear something . . . different. A few hairs on his back stood up when he sensed danger, and that?s what he felt here and now. They were not alone. Years of sneaking around in heavily-guarded areas had trained him well in the art of recognizing a threat. It was at this time that he could hear something shooting towards him. He dove out of the way as much as possible from the rifle shot, but it was too late. The bolt, although it missed his vital organs by quite a bit, embedded itself solidly in his right arm. White-hot pain shot through his veins immediately as the bolt shattered flesh inside his arm, causing it to be immediately disabled. It came to a stop at his side, his arm virtually worthless now. It was bleeding badly, but not badly enough to be an immediate concern. Whoever this was who had shot, they were good at aiming a ranged weapon. But, he wasn?t exactly a small target. That was the catch of being a Feeorin; everyone noticed you, and you couldn?t really hide your size very easily. His left arm reached down and pulled out the blaster that was housed in the side holster, and quickly fired a shot off in the direction that he figured the enemy was. ?Sniper! Get down!? he yelled to the others. Hopefully they understood what this warning meant. The pain in his arm was intense, but he couldn?t give up just yet. Stop shooting, and he would be dead; keep firing, and there was a chance he would nail the enemy and kill him.

Miss. The sniper instinctively rolled to the side and took cover the moment it registered that his target was still alive. His target's return fire swung harmlessly to the side of the sniper's position, but the giant's comrades were likely to be considerably more accurate, if they didn't immediately flee to summon reinforcements.

Time to move. "The ronto's spooked. All units engage."

The sound of five engines powering up simultaneously filled his helmet, and the sniper allowed himself a small predatory smile. Hunting time.

Napp hadn't heard any kind of scream or grunt coming from where he had shot, so he guessed that his shots had missed. That would figure; the team, not ready to go when they had left the base, made perfect sitting ducks in these wastelands. If only they had had sensors on the speeder bikes . . . But it was too late for that now. Now, survival was the main key, and Napp knew that his right arm would need to be serviceable if they were to win the fight. The others in the team would have to cover their backs too; they were all in a position of danger here. No one was safe.

Cocking the trigger of his blaster pistol once again, he surveyed the surrounding area. It seemed too quiet now. Snipers only fired one shot, and then gave in to other forces. But, what were those forces going to look like? Whatever they were, Napp knew that this was going to get rather hairy in a hurry if the others didn't get their game face on and prepare for an assault. He reached into a side pocket with one finger and tried to find the end of a grenade; in case it was necessary, he could pull the pin and let the would-be assassin get a face full of exploding shards. That would teach him to mess around with Napp. But, until he showed himself, why waste the ammo? It would be the waiting game now; what cards were the enemy holding?

He got down to where the wound was, it wasn't terrible. Octro immediately cleaned and cauterized the wound, he moved fast, then he spread some bacta on it and rapped in with a bandage. He would be fine when they got to base and fixed this up right, but until then it would be a pain to use this arm, although manageable.

Octro looked at the burly man. "Let's get the hell out of here, now. I don't care where we go, but we're obviously in plain sight of people who want to kill us." Octro hopped on his bike and started it up. They were leaving in 45 seconds, or at least he was.
