    The Final Trial

    Darth Soccmel, Darth Hesper

Darth Soccmel deepened his attunement in the force as he stretched forth his hand. He’d spied the wake left by a small skittering creature upon the surface of the water, but could not see it clearly for the fog. But the Force; it bound all things together.

It was almost as if a layer had been peeled back, an ethereal fog dispelled from his perceptions. The sith apprentice could now sense the tiny creature, almost see it clearly as if it were day. He could feel it.

With surprising ease, Soccmel levitated the multi-legged critter from the water and his speculation was rewarded with certainty. The critter was indeed one of the venomous spiders he and Darth Hesper had encountered before.

It wiggled helplessly in the air as he held it aloft, making tiny hissing noises at him.

Now he too could hear that nigh-imperceptible keening in the darkside. It grew louder, and in that moment, the hairs on the nape of Soccmel’s neck stood on end.

Fear and a sense of imminent danger washed through him. He could suddenly feel an ominously dark presence nearby, though unseen. It felt as if eyes were on him, many, many eyes. There was malice, hunger and a stalking predatory focus that could not be ignored.

Everything suddenly seemed to go very quiet, save for a faint sound caused by unseen movement.

    It was close.

And it was getting closer still.

    In the fog

The air buzzed with an eerie keening around Hesper; Soccmel was holding a creature aloft with the Force, a spider like the ones from the tunnel, and the keening seemed to grow louder and louder. She resisted the urge to cover her ears, and a crawling sensation raced across her skin. Something terrible was close by, and the Dark Side was singing of its approach. Ignited lightsaber and blaster still in hand, Hesper swiveled her head about, attempting to locate where the sound was coming from. But nearly as soon as it had begun, the sound ceased.

    It was pressingly silent.

    Then—movement.

Hesper whirled towards the sound, reaching out with the Force. If there was something out there in the fog that they couldn’t see, Hesper needed to know. She could feel eyes on her. Many eyes. The unfamiliar feeling of fear crept into the edges of Hesper’s consciousness. Casting a glance first at Soccmel and his spider, then back at the mist, Hesper called out.

    “Hello?”

    Darth Soccmel, Darth Hesper

    The Unknown

    Hello?”

Darth Hesper’s words were swallowed whole by the all-consuming silence, save for the reassuring hum of her lightsaber.

Her force senses blared at her, as it pinpointed the source of danger like a veritable hunter’s arrow:

The swirling fog parted like a dramatist’s curtain, revealing a behemoth. A spider, larger than two fully grown Bantha Bulls. It screeched aloud, the sound stabbing at their ears! It was just like the keening they had heard moments ago. From beneath its many legs, a small army of venomous spiders rushed forward at the two Sith Apprentices, their mandibles ready to pierce their flesh. One score, two score….maybe three!

The Giant Spider reared up, also readying a strike of its own.

The critter Darth Soccmel levitated wriggled vehemently, trying to free itself from his grasp.

Beyond the incoming army of critters and their gigantic progenitress, fuzzy patches of lights beckoned on a bridge too far.

    Not keen on that keening
More venomous spiders. That was a threat Darth Soccmel was ready for. He knew they would soon come across more of them and, having already slaughtered four of those creatures, he was not particularly worried about the encounter. “They’re just fastidious insects. All they can do is slow us down. Annoying beings indeed, but no match for two Sith”, he thought.

But suddenly out of the mist popped up a gigantic arachnoid that absolutely dwarfed the two apprentices with its bulky body. Something unexpected, so terrifying that almost paralysed Darth Soccmel. As if it were not enough, more small spiders were marching towards him and Hesper. Not to mention the huge webs knitted by the enormous spider, another lethal trap. The Umarell now realised where the creepy keening he was sensing came from, and was no good news. How to cope with the huge arachnoid and his numerous offspring?

The first thing to do was to get rid of the spider he had levitated, and that’s what Soccmel did, hitting the bewildered creature with his lightsaber. But now? What would be the next move? With a trembling voice that did not resemble his abitual gravelled one, he called his partner. “The incoming spiders. Let’s smash them down as quickly as possible. I assume force lightnings would do the job. Quick, Hesper, before that thing approaches us”.

    The Arena

An Imperial Knight-come-Disciple of Twilight walked into the arena, his lightsaber drawn. The silver blade shone in the stormy weather.

Matthias knew not when his adoptee would arrive.

But he was ready for him.

Finally, Matthias felt strong enough, sure enough, in his old dusty robes, to pass on what he knew.

The air in the arena was wet, the clouds above biding time before they emptied their contents all over the sandy floor.

It was dark, but Erenath immediately spotted the silver silghtsaber as she entered the arena. She quickly studied her opponent and mentor, his robes were weathered but well in tact.

Erenath drew her lightsaber, igniting the yellow chroma.
    '
She made the first move as she gathered the force and lept towards Matthias to close the gap between them.

His student, Erenath, leapt forward, closing the gap. Matthias slightly smiled beneath his greying beard. He simply stepped forward and slowly placed his lightsaber beneath her feet, speaking as he did so.

    'Solid footing is a start.'

He anticipated she would block as she landed, and he was already withdrawing from the contact; he simply wanted to make a point. 'Why rush to a point when it only imbalances you?'

He spun, lazily, cloak flowing, and with his off-hand he slashed, a backhanded cut that would pass through the side of her throat if she did not block it.

Then she would have space and time to riposte, but Matthias's feet were ready to step back and away to give him space to block, assuming she did not surprise him with an esoteric move.

Matthias was very open to being surprised. He was rusty.

    But he wasn't dead yet.

The air flew past her face as she bore down on Matthias, lightsaber ready to strike- when suddenly the grizzly Twilight Knight exploited her trajectory.

Erenath was taken by surprise at how quickly her mentor moved, for his age. Within the blink of an eye, she began pulling her shoulder back - causing her body to twist. As she landed she swathed an arc with her right hand to block the oncoming slash, bouncing Matthias lightsaber back with speed and force.

He recovered, ready for her next move; his words 'Solid footing is a start' echoing through her mind. Erenath slowed her breathing and focused the force, further enhancing her reflexes.

"Not all foes you face will be as accomodating as you mentor" she muttered to herself.

Erenath thrust forward with a stab towards Matthias' right hip, hoping his would block expose himself.

    Confrontation

A spider. Hesper instantaneously felt a crawling sensation all up and down her skin. It was massive, bigger than banthas, and it was angry. Hesper automatically took multiple staggering steps backward, stumbling over gnarly roots and vegetation. A screaming, shrill keen arose from the Giant Spider, and Hesper fought the urge to run away with very fiber of her being. Just then, an entire army of its young rushed from somewhere behind the behemoth arachnid, all of them screeching and shrieking.

Soccmel spoke, his voice quivering: "The incoming spiders. Let's smash them down as quickly as possible. I assume force lightning would do the job. Quick, Hesper, before that thing approaches us!"

Hesper shot Soccmel the stormiest glare she could muster. Force lightning? Hesper didn't trust herself to use force lightning while standing ankle-deep in brackish water. Deactivating her lightsaber and attaching it to her belt, Hesper took up her blaster, checked that it was working, and proceeded to fire at the spider army with deadly precision; a decision she knew she would regret, but one she made out of pure instinct. She used her left arm to stabilize her aim, sighting down the blaster with steely, hard eyes. Hesper would be victorious, even if it was the last thing she did.

Erenath caught his blow as he withdrew; too fast, betraying an anxiety to her approach, and stabbed for his right hip. Matthias simply blocked the tip of her strike at the base of his blade, where he chose to block on his weapon giving him more leverage to his deflecting back as he stepped forward; he needed a single hand to block her strike, thus.

His free hand jutted forward, and with an exertion, he pounded a Force push into the centre of her chest, a dispassionate expression on his face.

'I am not accommodating you, student.' He did not grin; he had heard her muttered aside. 'I am being as harsh as you need me to be to understand.'

'There is no right or wrong where we stand today.'

Matthias reset into a simple defensive stance.

    The Final Trial

    Darth Soccmel, Darth Hesper

    The Unknown-Revelation!

Darth Hesper summoned the force of her will to keep herself rooted in place and take action. This act of self-mastery was indeed laudable among the sith. Still, she only had time to spare Darth Soccmel a pointed cautionary glare at his suggestion. The stormy look was more than enough to speak volumes on her behalf.

Hesper moved deftly now, her combat readiness apparent as she traded her lightsaber for her modified blaster. With focus, purpose and the darkside on her side, she immediately opened fire at the incoming army of arachnids.

Hesper’s precision was lethal and unerring as she rapidly rained deadly bolts of blaster fire at the rushing wall of critters. Her instincts and the darkside were acting as one. The critters attempted to flank the pair, but it was to no avail. Hesper knew where they would be and laid waste to them without remorse. She had more than enough ‘shots’ charged and cycled between standard, multi-fire and auto-fire seamlessly. There was no escaping her fierce counter-attack.

But, to accomplish this incredible feat, a great deal of focus was required.

Hesper was in a sense -vulnerable as well.

Darth Soccmel witnessed it all in the span of a few heartbeats.

He witnessed Hesper’s dark feat with a blaster and how she held the wall of approaching critters at bay, just meters from their position while laying them low.

He saw the Mammoth Spider, begin to move suddenly, almost soundlessly -with a speed that defied its mass. Hesper seemed to take no note of it as it bounded at her, massive legs moving with deadly speed. Its huge mandibles opened, slavering with venom and menacing with deadly intent.

In an instant it would be upon her, and it would kill her, as it was poised to strike without impediment. The Giant Spider’s pincers would surely rend her asunder.

This, of course, was a great opportunity to get rid of the competition, but then, he would be forced to face the Giant Creature alone and likely suffer a similar fate.

As Mathhias' parry left an open gap for her to strike, she caught a glimpse of his free hand at the last moment - preparing to eject her with a force push. She smiled within herself at the salty veteran's counter, anticipating the blow.

She was not quick enough to dodge, but was able to use the force as a barrier to absorb the blast - causing her to slide back several meters, her feet digging into the hard ground. "There is no right or wrong here today." She didn't respond but let her mentor's words give her a sense of freedom.

Matthias went into a defensive stance. She paced herself, approaching him with her lightsaber at the ready.
Don't limit yourself, there is no boundary here.

With two hands on her lightsaber, Erenath elegantly moved towards Matthias - striking at him with a calm, precise set of flurry attacks meant to keep him busy. He blocked her attack easily. After her final uppercut she quickly took her off-hand and with an intense gust, used the force to kick up sand into Matthias' face as she side-stepped to gain an advantageous angle on him.

Kodo Prine's lightsaber hilt hung at his hip, glinting with the swish of his cloak as he strode quietly into the arena. Unassuming. His cloak and hood were a demure dark brown, the same color as his boots, and the tunic and pants he wore beneath were pale tan. A high dark brown collar peeked out from the folds of his tunic, and a tan sash cinched it all down.

His hood obscured his Kel Dor features as he searched for the one he was sent here to confront - and to redeem if possible. Darth Syren. If she were here already, her skill in the art of concealment was considerable.

Wrapped in the comforting darkness of the shadows, Syren carefully took in the being that walked out into the open arena. She could not see his face, but that made no difference. All that mattered was that she had been sent here to be tested. Now was the time and she would not fail.

Choosing to cautiously move out into the light to make her presence known, she removed her hood and began to slowly close the distance between herself and the stranger. Blazing red hair stood out like flames against an all-black jumpsuit, boots and cloak. As the latter billowed around her, dual lightsabers could be seen clipped to a low-slung utility belt on her hips.

Coming to a stop with a good bit of ground still between them, Syren called out to the hooded figure.

"I have been waiting for you."

Carefully, he shrugged off his cloak, allowing it to fall about his boots and revealing his Kel Dor face.

"If you choose to take up arms against me, you will be defeated. And I will even destroy you if I must. I have battled Sith far mightier than yourself and prevailed. Supreme Leader Snoke can count himself among them."

Narrowing her eyes, she took in the Kel Dor as he revealed himself to her. Tilting her head slightly as if in confusion, she sighed.

"Please," she said, beginning to pace slowly. "Tell me what it is that you think I need to hear. I am quite intrigued because I care not for your threats or your talk of peace . Therefore, really, what could you say to me that would stop the inevitable?"

Stopping to turn back to face him, her hands moved to her saber hilts on either hip, removing them from her belt and holding them at her sides. "I know what I came here to do. What I must do."

"You say the words as though you are reluctant. And if you are, then we have something in common."

He reached for his own hilt, and detached it from his belt. He did not ignite it.

"If neither of us wishes to fight, on whose behalf, then, do we cross blades?"

He stepped back into a defensive posture, his eyes never leaving her.

"And for whose benefit do we kill one another? Surely not our own."

Smirking, Syren began to pull on the dark side, welcoming its burning passion as it swelled inside her.

"You are very much mistaken," she sneered. "I would take great pleasure in your death."

As the last word was spoken, she activated both of her lightsabers. The crimson blades hummed to life as she sprang into action, clearing the distance between herself and her foe with Force-enhanced speed. As she reached the Kel Dor, she held one saber above the other to swing in from the side, intending to either decapitate or incapacitate. Preferably both.

"Forgive me, Lord Hades," her golden gaze returned to the master. "I concede this match. You have fought well. My only regret is I'm not much challenge to your skill." Her gaze held his with respect and admiration. "May we meet again."

With that said, Arach bowed deeply, then disappeared through the nearest exit, limping slightly. She called her vibroblade to her palm as she went.

And then she was upon him, charging with unnatural speed, crashing in with both blades at once. To Kodo's benefit, in the time she spent traversing distance and preparing for a powerful attack, he had only to step back and defend.

And step back he did, activating his emerald blade with a snap-hiss and bringing it vertically upward to catch his opponent's attack. He stepped back again, quickly, and arched his weapon over in a full circle, intending to use the Sith's body position against her - to bat her blades away in the path of her original attack. If successful it would leave her off balance for just a moment.

"You are blinded by hatred, Sith. How can you wish for my death? We are strangers. You have no reason to hate me but for the poison instilled in you by your dark masters. The dark side does not set you free - it chains you!"

Her sabers, missing their mark, were forced up and over which sent her whole body in a spin as she followed through. Spreading her feet wide to regain her footing and balance, her cloak and hair whipped around her as the momentum stopped. Expecting a counter-strike, she had moved fluidly into a defensive stance.

A flare of anger lashed out inside her. She had just been tossed aside like some… child. The Kel Dor’s talk of reluctance had goaded her into action, whether that was what he intended or not. Glaring at him as he spoke, she responded immediately to his last words.

“Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
    Through passion, I gain strength.
    Through strength, I gain power.
    Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
    The Force shall free me.”

The words had flowed from her without a thought, giving her focus. Her eyes remained locked on him as she relaxed her stance only slightly.

“You speak of common ground. I am a Sith, you are not. The only thing we have in common is this moment. Right here. Right now.”

The words of the Sith code flowed from her seemingly without a second thought. He could feel her anger flare at his attempts to negotiate, to find a peaceful resolution. He would let her fight - let the flames of her rage burn out, and when she was exhausted, and her will was broken by his steadfast defense, he would extend a hand of redemption.

"You are wrong, my friend. For nearly a decade I lived in exile, apprenticed to the holocron of Darth Plagueis. It warped me, filled me with hate... Drove me to murder. I know the allure of power, the intoxicating rush of anger."

He circled around to her left with his saber at the ready, away from what he assumed to be her dominant side. He was left-handed himself, and would keep his stronger side near to his opponent. He would only counter if leverage and range were on his side - and he would ensure they were.

"There is nothing worthwhile to gain from the dark side - its power is fleeting. Its rewards come with a heavy price."

Her attacks were becoming more difficult to defend, now.

Kodo blocked low, catching the saber aimed for his legs, but then was forced to fall back rather than counter. He dodged nimbly, flattening himself along the axis of her overhead strike to miss it narrowly, and retreated a few steps.

He expected an onslaught, and knowing that she would overwhelm him if he didn't find some kind of opening, he resorted to the safest option.

Calling on the force, he threw his free hand out in front, and sent a shuddering wave of energy towards her in a force push.
