Oh, that was me. The guy approached about picking it up. Not official or anything. just a freidn thinking I might be a good choice. I had a pretty far develped CIV game in the making, that is in my closet of games never come to pass . . . so I gave it a look. The discussion pretty much ended that idea. I am no veteran of any of hte games. Although the system is kinda familiar for those who played PC games in the nineties, is it?

But no big deal. I would have liked to give it a shot, but probably would have reformed it heavy. Legal problems with the frnachise came first. GM leaves, production company decides to have the frnachise rest. Happens in Hollywood everyday. :p

If we ever make a "the greatest RPF projects never happened" list I´ll have few interesting candidates I would have liked to GM. That´s the RPers curse . . . too little time, too many ideas.[face_laugh]

I actually disagree with Fin and Winged here. I think even with Xany. Oh my god. I disagree with everyone. [face_laugh] It is a calculation. Have you lowered the chances ever to see a healthy SL again on these boards? Surely. Have you made reforms to it difficutl/practical impossible? Maybe. Was it worth it? Obviously. You never revised the decision, so I think the Vets are fine with it. And the Vets have their heart in it and everybody else just thinks it´s a cool idea. There are so many, we can do without this one I am sure.

Not quite. You can't make a turn-based game in space called System Lords using System Lord's cost list without some attention from the mods and whoever among the System Lords veterans who are still around to chime in. Let's be honest here, the biggest reason to do that nowadays would be to trade on the name, so it's only fair that those who have a stake in it get a say. If you demonstrate you really have a handle on the spirit of System Lords and will do it justice, you can do it.

Besides, "turn-based game in space with a cost list" is a really really basic description of System Lords, and I don't think anyone got the impression we were banning all games of that sort - or at least, if they did they shouldn't have. I mean, that could also describe a Starcraft game.

Nothing new there, then? :p :p

Joking aside: yes, we've made it 'difficult' for anyone to make a System Lords game nowadays in that you have to be a veteran of the series or a capable GM in your own right. Sorry. GMing is hard; GMing a complex strategy game with a load of expectations behind it is harder. If someone just wants to make a strategy game, they can do it without it being 'System Lords' - I was thinking about running one myself last summer - and save themselves the bother of all this.

We have done nothing to make it more difficult to run a SL game. Again, all a hopeful GM has to do is PM Xan or myself. Getting into all this other nonsense is outrageous.

I will say it again: a game within the System Lords franchise is not impossible. So far, though, no one has come to myself or Xan to ask to run one.

The Mods are spot on here.

The decision made back in the day that I'm happy to see being upheld is a franchise-protecting move. Think about real products. Coca-cola has a certain protections on its products. Does that mean other sodas can't exist? No. Does that mean other *similar* tasting sodas can't exist? Also no. There are plenty of Pepsi Colas and RC Colas out there.

What you can't do is call yourself "Coca-Cola," market a product that looks just like Coca-cola, etc.

In my opinion, the original decision was made to protect 1.) the name "System Lords" and its associated storyline, (and prevent similar obvious rip-offs like "Planet Kings" :p ), 2.) the original price and unit alignment in the shop (which is at the heart of the game's strategic package), and 3.) the content of the OP (no copy-paste jobs).

That was it when I was in the big-chair. The current team might have a more strict or less strict interpretation. If you interpreted the decision back then as a ban on all fleet-based shop-type strategy games, not only had I poorly communicated my opinion, but I did the RPF a disservice in the process. Strategy games are still the richest, untapped resource out there in RPF land, and more people should think about adding them to their portfolios.

    Until next time friends! :)

    Planet Kings [face_laugh]

Hammer! A delight to see you back so soon, even if it is only for a single post. :p

Well Xany and Hammer have said what I would have said, and they said it better too. I would just re-iterate their point that the moratorium on SL games was never so broad as to encompass all space based strategy games. I think Hammer's 3 Points very neatly sum up what was being protected.

One point of clarification: LordT I had no idea you were approached! It would have been pretty cool to see you at the helm. Obviously I was not referring to you earlier, I was only aware of one candidate, a newbie who volunteered at the time.

Anyway, as Peng has rightly noted, this is all academic until someone decides to actually declare an interest and shoot off a PM...

Which is to say: if you're really serious about this, Despised, just ask! We can have a chat about it and see where that takes us.

Well, I only disagreed. :p[face_laugh] Had no idea we would get a Tuesday afternoon discussion out of it.

So - as long as nobody wants to pick it up - we´re disucssing rescent RPF history here. Which isn´t bad, is it? We could discuss worse. o_O

First of all, thank you all very much for the discussion. This is one reason why I love the RPF.

I was actually thinking of my own New Sith Order/Galactic Defend games and the subsequent Sith Trials franchise.

While the character level/ability point system wasn't really "new", what I did was to take an existing but very basic idea from IBOP (character levels/points) and expand upon it when I created the first New Sith Order/Galactic Defender game.

Since then however, I have seen many other games utilize rules which appear to habe been based off of this levle/point system (or ones that were modified a bit, such as the RPF/EUC dueling tournaments)...which is really just fine in my opinion because it adds to the tool kit that other GM's can utilize in games.

That is the kind of cannibalization I was refering to.

Now after Hammer posted, it appears I may have misunderstood what was really meant by the System Lords "ban". My intention is not to create a System Lords game, but more or less just cannibalize the shop-type strategy game format.

That being said, I would definately like to get some help in the creation and running of the game....and was considering utilizing the Game Designers Group for that part of the process.

GDG, ah I took over duty there. Guarding the cue and all that.

Well, we got the 7 days rule there, meaning Sinre got 6 days left to be discussed purely and undisturbed. After that I would say you should get a whole two weeks for such a complicated topic and it shall be yours.

Cool, in the meantime I will get to work putting together a draft so we have a starting point and idea of the game I had in mind.

I posted an OP over in the GDG. I was wondering if any of you guys would like to put forth your two cents regarding my idea of ?escorting the devil.? Is this an interesting idea to you guys? Would you play it?

Dunno if anyone has suggested this or tried to start one but I'm certain there is an interest out there for it, after all the show I'm about to suggest is quite popular.

House MD - Star Wars Edition

    Need I say more?

LightWarden would make a perfect Gregory House. He's got the personality imo :p

Probably would be best suited during the Prequel or New Republic Era. House would probably get himself killed or incarcerated the first time he makes a sarcastic, snarky comment to the wrong person in the Rebellion or Legacy Era. Lol.

Anyway... this is an idea I'm tossing out for someone else to pick up and play around with if they like the idea. Ive no time to do RPs myself, barely able to post in Saint's game these days.
