Reports suggest BioWare is working on Knights of the Old Republic multiplayer online title.
Widely celebrated as the best Star Wars game of recent years, rumours have emerged that RPG specialist BioWare is hard at work on an MMO version of its hugely popular Knights of the Old Republic franchise.

CVG reports that the latest edition of US games print mag EGM includes the snippet in its Rumour section. No confirmation has been forthcoming from the developer as of yet, but were the game to emerge it would almost certainly be a sure-fire contender to better LucasArts? previous MMO outing, the troubled Star Wars Galaxies.

Knights of the Old Republic was a critical and commercial success upon its release on Xbox in 2003. Its fortunes were mirrored by an equally celebrated PC version shortly afterwards. Obsidian took over the reigns for the second instalment in 2005, which whilst failing to win over the critics was again another firm retail success.

If this does happen, it better not replace KotOR III and had damn better reference Dark Horse's current run of KotOR comics.

Amen. I'm not a big fan of MMORPGs TBH and if they scrap KOTOR III for this, I will be seriously disappointed.

Wasn't it Bioware that said they don't want to work on any titles that are not their own creation? And why make a MMORPG of KOTOR in place of KOTOR III? I think this is just a very silly rumor. Or at least I hope it is.

They are also notorious for not wanting to do sequels.
But, if they wanted to venture out into MMOs, this wouldn't be a bad place to get their feet wet...oh, goodness no! What am I saying?!?!

Yeah, since this is a probable extension to the IP than a 'sequel' (at least that's my hope ) we'll leave this one.

 

I'm actually excited about this. If done well, it could do the same thing that WoW has done for the Warcraft Universe.

 

Yeah, but look where Star Wars Galaxies went.

 

Well, hopefully they learn from history.

That said, I'm honestly not a big star wars fan, but even I think it'd be incredible to take the Jedi Civil War to a much larger scale, further explore the mythos of the Old Republic and Early Sith, and to participate in the historical battles mentioned in the KotOR games.

I'm hoping it won't, my biggest hate about mmorpgs is that I can't afford to play them.

I'd like to see a proper KotOR III in the same vein as the previous KotOR incarnations. However, a decent MMORPG set in the SW universe would be an excellent thing. Just so long as it hastens Galaxies' death.

How long does it take to make a MMORPG as compared to a normal game? Perhaps this is athe laying of the ground work for a MMORPG that would come after KOTOR III.

 

I hate MMO's. I'll admit that I've never played one, but just the very idea is so abhorrent to me that it doesn't matter - I never will play one. Why should I pay for the right of forced socialization? I have no desire to pal around with a bunch of 13 year olds, or 35 year olds pretending to be teenage lesbians for even one cent per month (If I wan't to play with other people, I'll go outside). I'm sure there are nice reasonable people who play MMO's (and other online games - like Halo), but I never find any. It just burns me up to see publishers like Lucas Arts divert resources away from good single player content just so they can boast that a game has online multiplayer functionality - even if it's not any good.
