I am guessing babies is the long one? If so then I do that.

Baby has the vowel of bay, while babby has the vowel of babble. Does that help? If not, can you read IPA?

I have never heard it said that way.

 

I think it's an archaic pronunciation that still gets used for old-timey or humorous effect. I guess it's still standard in some dialects. Definitely not any I've heard in person though.

However, something tells me modern internet use of babby is just an intentional misspelling to be cute.

 

To my knowledge, it isn't used anywhere in the anglosphere. Could be wrong, but I say it that way just cause I can. It sounds more.... I don't want to say puerile, but enjoyable in a somewhat self-mocking way

 

Wiktionary says it's "regional". I have encountered it in books. And one of those instances was indeed Obi-Wan.

I think I know what you mean, but I wouldn't say that was a short a such as in words like "that". It was sort of an almost in-between diphthong, the sort that really, REALLY annoy linguists and phonologists

No, I'm talking about in the ROTS novelization (at least I think it was there, so bear with me) when Obi and Yoda are infiltrating the Jedi Temple after Order 66. Obi is carrying Yoda disguised as a baby and attempts to interest the guards in buying a "Jedi babby".
It's been ages since I read that but it stuck with me.

 

I wasn't referring to the actual pronunciations of Ewan, Sir Alec, or JAT.

 

Saw Solo again today, freakin love the Train Heist scene.

 

It is a great film and I am sad that so many people seem to have missed it judging by the box office.
