i was watching "the descent" the other night, quite a good movie and i was just wondering what people`s favorite scary movies were?

the fog is one of my all time favorites, amityville part one was good back in the day. the original dawn of the dead movies were great.

dog soldiers brings us way up to date, a quality flick (and british too!!).

anybody got any good ones to suggest? opinions?

I thought the Nightmare movies got boring toward the end. And I fell asleep during "Freddy Vs Jason".I-) Final Destination freaked me out - especially when no one saw the bus coming

    What's your favourite scary movie?

    Showgirls. Absolutley frightening. :p

I actually like Freddy vs. Jason, and have that on DVD too. I found it to be quite inventive...they could have gotten that film so wrong. Same with Wes Craven's New Nightmare. That was quite original.

The first will still always be the best. Number two had a great premise, but was botched. Number 3 was good, but four was bad...five was even worse! And I've only seen number six once, and that's when it first came out on VHS, so you can tell how long ago that was!

I also like Halloween, and The Exorcist, and couldn't believe it when I found out it was banned here. I thought who were the numpties at the BBFC who dished that one out?

The original "House on Haunted Hill" - a great example of how a scary should be made.

    NOTE TO FILM-MAKERS!!!

Blood and gore are NOT scary. It's horrific, but NOT scary.

Scary = Suspense. Make the audience on edge. Don't make them go "Yuk"

i saw half of arachnophobia, the other half was spent out of the room LOL!

never watched friday 13th, just didn`t appeal to me.

nightmare on elm streets were good, although the last couple were stretching things IMHO.

final destination was good, as it makes you jump in all the right places, two was good as well, especially the car crash scene, although with regards to what Hal said, it`s more of a gorefest.

suspense movies are good too, the only thing scary about blair witch project was being lost in the woods, that would be scary; not knowing where the hell you were or how to get back. i kind of liked open water too for this reason; stranded, lost, no way of getting out of a situation and basically screwed! i recommend the descent if you like suspense films.

nobody has mentioned alien yet. one of the greatest suspense/monster/horror flicks? certainly top of the class when it was originally released.

I loved Alien and Aliens (I though Aliens was better)

Although scary they weren't terrifing ala Arachnophobia

aliens was in a different class though, it`s still up there with one of the greatest movies of it`s genre, but i wouldn`t necessarily say it was a horror movie, more of an action flick with "monsters". a truly great film never the less.

has anyone watched eight legged freaks?

Ichi the Killer. Not really scary unless gore, blood and other similar things scare you.

I enjoy slasher/gore flicks, but their more like comedy to me. It's the crazy people and snakes that scare me.

"snakes, why did it have to be snakes* *shudders*

Same here. I'm a severe Arachnaphobic. I could only watch ten minutes of it before I had to leave the room. :_|
