So this is how I think it should work out:

October 15th - announce the contest
October 29th - last day to sign up either as judge or contestant

    A week's break for Halloween

    November 6th - Challenge 1
November 9th - presentations from the contestants
November 12th - presentation of winners and losers

    November 13th - Challenge 2
November 16h - presentations from the contestants
November 19th - presentation of winners and losers

    November 20th - Challenge 3
November 23rd - presentations from the contestants
November 26th - presentation of winners and losers

    November 27th - Challenge 4
November 30th - presentations from the contestants
December 3rd - presentation of winners and losers

    December 4th - Challenge 5
December 7th - presentations from the contestants
December 10th - Presentation of the three finalists

Since this will probably be a very time-consuming contest I'd like to give the finalists a break over the holidays.

    January 7th - Final challenge
January 14th - presentations from the contestants
    January 21st - Winner announced

So what do you think of the schedule, is the holiday break too long? Should there be a couple more challenges?

I think the schedule is pretty do-able. People will know what they are getting into before they sign up.

Looks good, but I have one suggestion. Since this will be so time consuming for the contestants, perhaps announcing the challenge on a Thursday or Friday so that they may have the weekend to work on their challenge. We present the entrants on maybe Monday or Tuesday and we can announce the winners right before we announce the second challenge...

The number of challenges should depend on the number of contestants we want to have.

Well Thursday-Monday for the challenge, also allowing people to be away for the weekend and still have a chance to finish. I would like to give the judges some time to make their choices, so that would be Tuesday-Thursday, and the winner and new challenge is presented on Thursday.

We can vary the amount of challenges depending on how many people that want to take part, I don't want it to get too long though, so maybe we will have to kick out more than one loser each round.

Just a note about US-based contestants. November 23rd is Thanksgiving. It's almost as big a deal as Christmas is here in the UK and Europe. A lot of people make a long weekend out of the holiday and travel to visit family (or they have family visiting them). You might consider taking a break that week since most of your contestants will probably be from the US.

Ok, so then another suggestion for schedule would be something like this:

October 16th - announce the contest
October 30th - last day to sign up

    November 2nd - Challenge 1
November 6th - presentations from the contestants
November 9th - presentation of winners and losers

    November 9th - Challenge 2
November 13th - presentations from the contestants
November 16th - presentation of winners and losers

    November 16th - Challenge 3
November 20th - presentations from the contestants
November 23rd - presentation of winners and losers

    November 30th - Challenge 4
December 4th - presentations from the contestants
December 7th - presentation of winners and losers

    December 7th - Challenge 5
December 11th - presentations from the contestants
December 14th - presentation of the three finalists

    January 4th - Final Challenge
January 11th - presentations from the contestants
    January 14th - Winner announced
