It's not a bad idea, but would be better being held in Scotland.

In 1995 a "unity rally" was held in Montreal three day's before the referendum was held for Quebec to leave the Union.

100,000 Canadians turned up to urge Quebec to stay part of Canada. This was undoubtedly one of the key points of the campaign.

Better than that slim, 4% lead for 'NO' you posted about a couple of days ago.

Small comfort. A difference of just two points is within the statistical margin or error. When it's that close the result could go either way.

so what are the chances of this being fixed to ensure a "no" outcome?

Check the betting sites -- that should give an indication.

My good sir, HMG is above such sordid matters as the fixing of referendums. :p

Yeah this has all made me very nervous. Question.... When will the results actually be known? Will it all be tallied by a certain time on the day? When do the polls close?

I'm basically going to be at work mostly focused on this while no one else has a clue what's going on. Oh America.

In the AV referendum back in 2011 the vote was held on the 5th May and the result was announced on the 7th. Seeing as this is just Scotland, I can't think it would take more than two days.

I suppose, if the result was really, really close one side may demand a recount. [face_dunno]

Voting is Thursday 18th. Depending on how and where they do the counting, final result sometime Friday 19th, maybe Saturday 20th.

It will almost certainly be a "Yes" vote. The more pragmatic Scots may well move their money elsewhere, but who would want to say they voted "No" in the current climate?

I wouldn't be so sure. The risks of independence have been very clearly outlined, both by BT and by the international community and by business as well. Despite Salmond's claims of scaremongering, the Chancellor has unequivocally ruling out currency union so iScotland really doesn't have a good currency option.

Couple all that with the fact that a no vote is basically a vote for devo-max as the three main parties have promised extra powers and I think it's clear that a no vote is the best choice. After all, whichever way the vote goes, Scotland will get more powers. Why choose the option that also entails high risk and uncertainty? I expect common sense to prevail on Thursday, I really hope it will, but we will just have to see.

I expect passion and frustration with the government to trump the safer, more considered option.

A "Yes" wouldn't surprise me. Those who want change are far more prone to vote in this apathetic culture than those who don't.

Any predictions as to the turnout?
