While NO seemed the likely outcome, 45% of Scots saying they are in favour of independence is still a lot.
I'm all for the home nations getting more powers, or even their own governments. They are separate countries after all, why should they accept being governed by England?

Great change is coming, but it should benefit all sides. A big constitutional change is in order though, that might take a while.

Never have I been so happy to be utterly wrong about something in my life!

So, at 55% 45% we have a pretty comfortable victory for NO (much more comfortable than the Quebec result for instance)

Hopefully that will put an end to the threat of separation for another 20 years, by which time North Sea oil will be on it's way out and the Nat's will have an even harder time selling the economic case for separation .

For the foreseeable future it seems Great Britain remains secure all-be-it within a federal system of governance.

    Happy day's.:)

No, not good enough. Better than what we have now, certainly, but still.

I feel that four English parliaments / assemblies (North, Midlands, South-West, South-East) are needed at the bare minimum to make this work. And I'm going to reiterate my support for the resurrection of the Heptarchy while I'm at it. Though that's for romantic, rather than practical, reasons. :p

I'm happy with the result. Considering that there are 5 million people in Scotland compared to the 60 odd million living in the rest of the United Kingdom the overall result being 55 for no and 45 for yes it was close but still far. And I think overall a yes vote was too uncertain, it was like saying that if you vote yes it might turn out alright. Being half Scottish I'm glad they stayed with Britain, it would make family get togethers very awkward :). The rest of the world only seemed to want to see the United Kingdom fail, and didn't really have best interests in heart. I'm happy with the new powers Scotland will be getting, they do deserve to govern their own people, but to be still be part of the union and to vote to stay proves that The British parliament is capable and knows what they're doing, despite the rest of the worlds want to see them fail.

Well done Scotland. I'm happy for you.

I don't think it's quite as rosy as that. I think that there were a lot of Scots who didn't have much confidence in the Scottish independence politicians having a realistic game-plan for an independent Scotland. I think "better the devil you know" was the case for many voters.

So, now does England vote, and if it goes to. 1-1 tiebreaker, a combined Wales and Northern Ireland get to make the casting vote?

EV4EL is going to be the big story now.

Expect a huge bust up about this between Labour (who will be against) and Conservatives (who will see it as possibly their route to staying in power at Westminster next year)

Thanks for providing the link. Listening to 3 hours of local radio really provided a nice crash course on the issue. It really wasn't about emotional nationalism or even "existential nationalism," a phrase you'd never get to hear on American news, but a legitimate socio-economic near-revolt, a *nevolt*, as if "Occupy Wall Street" had managed to actually move its grievances into a national referendum. Ultimately the movement was crushed by the ruling class, a victory of lopsided campaign spending and the power of negative advertising.

The fact that Ender, SJ, and Jello are all happy with this outcome make me think it was a bad result.
