Right on, Vortigern. use the Force, Luke. Let go, Luke. The Force is Strong with this one.

Let go of the OT, because the prequels are intended to be viewed prior to viewing the OT. Leia wasn't rolling around 25 years before Padme, Padme was rolling around before Leia. Why should Padme be REMINISCENT of a character that's introduced in the story later?

I did not mean to trash Carrie Fisher in my posts, Ms. Fisher is an extremely talented woman who has done exceptional work in several fields. I do not care for her performances in the 2 non-Lucas-directed sw sequels. I like her performance in the 1977 edition because it is so over-the -top and melodramatic. There is nothing wrong with highly arch hammy comic performances placed in the proper context. And Princess Leia in the original film is a classic of that acting style, right up there with Judy Garland in The Pirate. In the sequels, she is played more for realism and a bit of the magic is lost. Oh well, to each his own.

I think Padme is the bomb, don't ya get it? She is the classic Romantic Leading Lady. It works best for the story if all the men and girls think she's a dream to look at, because it's the audience's job to fall in love with her. Now if Natalie doesn't do it for you, then the love story isn't really going to work now, is it? Same for the chicks about Hayden. If you fall in love with Nat and wannabe Hayden and the girls are ga-ga over Hayden, then I defy you to deny the lump in your throat when Padme confesses her love to Anakin. If you aren't attracted by these Actors you're going to think the love story sux.

I personally find Nat to be the nth of perfection the sexiest woman alive. If you don't like her body style, don't say she needs meat on her bones. She has a very healthy appearance, her body is meant to be that size and shape. No nutrition or fitness problems whatsoever as far as I can tell. Some men prefer larger chests on women and/or implants. I prefer naturally beautiful women.

If you aren't in love with Padme, sorry Attack of the Clones is probably not yor kinda movie. Get Titanic or Empire Strikes Back or Can't Hardly Wait.

I didn't want Padme and Anakin's relationship to be Han/Leia rehashed. But Anakin knows even less about women than Han. It's supposed to be more formal cause it's the Old Republic and all but it's not perfect. But I still like how much Padme cared for Anakin.

There are plenty of posts here about how good looking Natalie Portman is and how her performance was "good enough for me". That's great...but hot chicks and "good enough" performances does not a Star Wars flick make.

I don't think all of the blame should lie on Portman's shoulders... the Padme character is simply boring beyond belief. There is simply no spark, nothing to get me interested. Every line was spoken like a drugged-up college student (echoing real life? Nah.). She stutters during the picnic scene in AOTC. Even her "GET TO YOUR SHIPS!" line in TPM was calmed down in the final film.

Yeah, there may be some legitimacy to the "George wanted it that way" story and the "It's the Director's Vision" crap but it really comes down to a bunch of really dull characters. Who knew the Jedi were all a bunch of stiffs? Except for Obi-Wan's "good job!" line and Yoda's kick-ass fight, the Jedi have all the excitement of a bunch of casino-going assisted living residents. But that's for another post... ;)

Adventure heh excitement heh...a Jedi craves not these things. Never saw so many people writing so much about something they don't like. A dull character she is not; a subtle character she is. She dominates. She is in charge. Everybody is trying to shut her down. Gotta go, forget about it. Go to the Buffy board and rave about Sarah Michelle, k? The prequels are not for you.

Seiously, what was so BAD about Padme?

Seriously, what was so GOOD about Padme? Horrible acting, doesnt look good shooting a gun...I laugh everytime she shoots a gun! LOL! And I would rather see Anakin relationship with Obi develop more than his relationship with Padme. I am not saying take her out of the movies...I just dont like her character.

[face_laugh] Lol! Natalie does need some more meat on her body, I am a girl, but come on, do those skinny as a stick attract males *that* much? It doesn't with my male friends.

Han/Leia was better than Anakin/Padmé in my thoughts, your right, in Anakin/Padmé's time, it was the 'old' courting days as some would say, but really, as least in the old trilogy, it was *witty!* and laughable, not lame and stupid.

I was sinking into my seat during the fireplace scene, I couldn't believe I bought tickets to something like *that*! :(

*still* something is missing, I am still confused no matter what, married so soon? I was pissed when GL didn't make a scene has to how Anakin and Padmé decided to married.

Ranger Princess, I feel certain that Natalie Portman is neither underweight nor undernourished. Her physique appears to match perfectly her bone structure and small size. If she had any more weight on her, it would either be excess fat, or in the form of muscle--both of which would be inappropriate, in my opinion, for a romantic heroine and a Galactic Queen-turned-Senator.

As to the hurried choice to wed, we have seen that the two love each other deeply. They have expressed this through word and action alike. Should an already lengthy film be weighed down with a scene in which the heroes decide to get married? And where would you insert such a scene?? The wedding is meant to come as a nice surprise to the audience, but otherwise seems entirely natural and reasonable, given what we know about both bride and groom.

So, would you like a scene returning to Naboo--perhaps inserted behind the reconaissance between Dooku and Sidious, but before we see the Clone Army in all its glory--in which Anakin drops to one knee and asks for Padme's hand? Followed directly by the council with Kenobi and Yoda, and finally, the marriage scene??

My feeling is that that would be entirely superfluous, unnecessary, and silly. The fact that they're getting married means that Anakin asked Padme or Padme asked Anakin, or they just decided together. What is there to be confused about?

    Yesss!

I wanted that! It would have been the best romance scene! unlike the other corny ones!

But yeah, it's probably better the way it was, can't wait for Obi-Wan's reaction!

BTW, I am going to bed. Night all.

I am with you, RangerPrincess. I didn't buy the marriage either, and I creeped into my seat during fireplace scene.

I wanted the love story works, and to be honest it didn't for me.Yes, I know some people had written essays arguing the style of the love story, but it still doesn't make sense. Why would she fall for him? And why was he so obssessed with her?

Well, I think it's obvious why he was obsessed with her. As for her, I think she's just young and naive, as Palpatine said. Neither one of them really has the experience to know what love is. They just know they have a strong feeling for this other person, and with nothing to compare it to, mistake whatever emotion they're feeling for love. I think that's part of the tragedy: they made this great mistake that's going to have consequences not only for them, but for the entire galaxy.

Wait until Ep 3 to see how deep Padme's love for Anakin really is. Maybe you might consider her stupid when she still loves him after he becomes dark and all but it will make her decision to marry him more believable.

I've always thought she had a lot of Luke's personality but I guess her kids have more personality than her.

I think that Padme was the worst actor in AOTC even worse than Anakin. However, neither of these actors or completely to blame or even mostly to blame. After all this is George's story to tell. The dialogue was cheesy and unbelievable, I agree that he is trying for a very formalized courtly type romance, whatever, it didn't work and these actors couldn't pull it off. The best acting they did were in scenes where they were released from this burden, like the meadow scene and the tusken massacre confession scene and the ???? (oops I guess that's it).

I thought Anakin over played his scenes consistently and Padme was sleepwalking most of the time. She looked as if she needed to take some major vitamins to get some life in her skinny bones. Now don't get me wrong she is hauntingly beautiful and physically perfect for the role, as is Hayden. They however are young and shouldn't have been allowed to get away with this kind of acting on screen, thats what retakes are for. Therefore, this is Georges'fault these are the performances he approved for his masterpiece. I don't think the man is up to the challenge anymore. I long for someone else to direct EP III.

Also I loved AOTC on a whole, but the romance was bad primarily because of the dialogue and the acting. Since the romance is pivotal to the story it's a shame that those 12 minutes marred an otherwise great movie.

To BlueMules and others who question Anakin's love for Padme, and vice versa:

Love is a mystery. Who can say "why" this person loves that person? Haven't we all experienced an attraction for someone that feels stronger than friendship, deeper than lust, but we don't understand "why" we feel that way? Maybe we've known them five minutes; maybe they're not the ususal kind of person we're drawn to; and yet, there's something about them, a magical quality that is indefinable, indescribable, inexplicable.

So it is for our two heroes. There is no "why". It just IS.

i think the actors are like 50% to blame for the bad acting. You can tell that they didnt really research there characters history that much.It is her job to add a little spice to her character not just the directors.Maybe if she knew her character a bit more and her characters daughter a bit more...she could have been better.

Yusuafro, I categorically disagree. The acting in AOTC is simply delivered in a different, less naturalistic style than that of the OT (especially ESB). It's a "more civilized time," when formality was the social order of the day, and people were prone to suppressing their true feelings.

But look at the scene in front of the waterfall, when the two are discussing politics. Their social restrictions and political expectations falling away, Ani and Padme grow more relaxed with each other; and it shows in the performances. Portman's "stuttering"--as one poster here called it--is simply an example of a more natural style of acting, that will become more prominent as the old ways disintegrate.

Anakin in particular exemplifies this turn in style. He's all too willing to express his feelings, and, say what you will about his "cheesy" (I say "Shakespearean") dialogue, Christensen's performance remains stunning--all raw emotion and pent-up rage. The boy is a true talent.
