The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that television execs and advertising agencies think product placement and the 30 second commercial spot are not getting the respect they deserves from us consumers, so in order to combat us ignoring them, there will be pop-up ads taking up the lower quarter of your screen during normal programming. Not only that, but the ads will run during relevant portions of the programming (see a guy shaving in the mirror, get a pop-up ad from a razor company). Do "They" think we just don't see enough advertising in a day? If you aren't busy throwing things through your television yet, you can read the article over here (with no pop-up ads)."

    Grrrrrr!!!

I notice TV3 already do something along these lines. I was watching something the other night (might have been 24) and they scrolled an advert for Alias across the bottom of the screen.

Not to mention the annoying logo on TV3, TV4 and Prime (and probably the Sky channels) that's stuck on screen ALL the time, except for advert breaks of course.

yeh those logos are really annoying when you are trying to video movies.

Mind you a fortune could be made by anyone that could invent a "pop up killer" for the telly.

You can already get what are basically computers with large harddrives that you can use as a VCR and they can skip the normal advert breaks - as long as the breaks are encoded properly (there's some sort of "beep" in the shows that TV networks use to place the advert breaks. :)
