Why do the Seperatist planets feel it necessary to sucede from the Galactic? On what grounds were they leaving? Is this explained in the films?

They did because they wanted free trade and thought that the Republic was too corrupt to funtion properly.

Geez, there are only like a million other threads on this subject.

The sepratist movement was part of Palpatine's master plan. A war creates chaos, destroys infrastructure, and makes people more willing to give up individual liberty in return for more percieved saftey. Palpatine used the war to gain all the executive powers that allowed him to totally wrest control of the government from the Senate.

Once again, this shows a main reason for PT hate is a simple lack of understanding the plot.

jangoisadrunk, erm, yeah I realise why Palpatine would want a war and to create fractions within the Republic. My question wasn't about that. I asked why the seperatist planets themselves wanted such a situation.

EmperorSorridom, is this spelled out in the film or have you got this from the OS or EU? Thanks for your gracious answer, it's a shame not everyone can be so polite.

...because palpatine was good at blaming his actions on other people, he's place a levey on free trade, then complain to the sepratists that the wicked/corrupt republic was infringing on thier rights even though it was him
then he'd complain that the senate couldn't be trusted because they were corrupt, obviously, and the only way to rid them of the corruption was tor emove all people from power who challanged him, claiming they were responisible for his actions, and the only way to fix things was to give hime even more powers

I thought the neimodians were mad at Sidious so thats why they went to Dooku. SO why are Sidious and Gunray talking to each other in ROTS. and does GUnray know Sidious=Palps? In TPM Sidious says 'I will make it legal' meaing he must have some high ranking place in the Senate.

The corruption part is, and the thing about free trade is implied in TPM.

Other than that, this is stated in various other places, like the EU.

    Thanks for your gracious answer

    You're welcome. :)

"Once again, this shows a main reason for PT hate is a simple lack of understanding the plot."

Understood the plot perfectly; consider it to be an EXCELLENT story. Main reason for hating prequels is they are poorly executed, badly acted, too reliant on CG, driven by marketing, and they clash horrifically with OT.

    EmperorSorridom is right

palpatine couldnt have engineered the war if there was no suitable host for it
in order to spread the Sith infection he needed a host, he got two actually

one was the august republic which was more name than fact, the other are the commerce entities where he used them. neverthelss, palpatine or not, the commerce entities started the war for a reason of their own.

to the guy who said it all Sidious super-duper-master-plan; u know its really destroys the character of Sidious if u think everything that happened in PT was of his design. Sidious is the master manipulater, but he is Super Man. i really dont care when people say "ahh he planed to have Maul killed, ahh he plan to ... all along"

10,000 systems join the seperatists, these are just people and not part of the trade federation, so does the republic pre rots go after its former citizens?

To answer a question from above, Gunray and co. did NOT know Sidious = Palpatine. Dooku, though, obviously did.

The TF people were rather upset with Sidious after Naboo, but they had already gotten too entangled to back out easily.

And Sidious is not all-powerful, but he can see likely futures. He may not have intended Maul to die, but once he had, he (slightly) altered his plan going forward so that it still fit his vision.

i concur with that, obiously if we go back in time (movie-wise) and rescue Maul from death the storyline of AOTC with be dramatically different, but there are some fan that like to think linearly, so in their head if Maul was not killed (movie-wise) in TPM, the AOTC would be the same movie but with Maul as Dookue

they think Lucas planned the entire prequal trilogy from begening

SO dooks and Sids were the only ones who knew the war was a setup right?

Yea Sids didnt intnd on having Maul die, he wanted him to be his apprentice throughout the whole saga. He dies and Sidious sets his sights on Ani. "We will be watching your career with great intrest" you can't have a 9 year old sith lord so he went to the fallen jedi Dooku to do his work until Anakin was old enough and powerful enough. SO his plan didn't go perfect thier were bumps along the way, but he worked everything out and got his empire.

I think Palpatine could have seen Maul's death; he is very powerful and besides if Maul really did wipe them all out as instructed that would be the end of the chosen one who after all was the great hope of the Sith

As for the sepratists I am not sure they really wanted war (not all of them anyway) Dooku tells them that after their army is mobilized the Republic will have to agree to their demands but the Republic attacks before these demands can be put on the table. I suspect they called for reform with succesion as a last resort. Padme even mentions in ROTS that the war would have been avoided had there been some diplomacy.

Your suspicions as to what the separatists wanted are the only logical aims that we can ascribe to a political group whose name is the only thing we actually know about them.
Would systems who were wanting reform or secession suddenly be willing to go to war with the Republic over a battle which could be argued as having been provoked by Dooku. Obi Wan is on Geonosis following the trail of an assassin who tried to kill a Senator of the Republic (an act of war), if the separatist systems knew this wouldn't they have been more likely to try and kick the party responsible for this out of their movement instead of going to war? Part of the reason they wish to separate is because of corruption and indifference, wouldn't they want to eliminate that from their own ranks? Especially considering that the assassination attempt was on Padme, the Senator leading the fight against the creation of an army for the Republic. And Padme must be somewhat of a rallying call to the separatist movement in the first place, if they feel overtaxed and underserved by the Republic, what did the horror story of the Republic's inaction towards Naboo in TPM mean to them?
