Adnan is the victim of discrimination against Muslims.

 

In a fictionalized movie version of Serial, Adnan charms SK into fully believing his innocence. She fights to prove his innocence the whole movie, desperately seeking evidence to free Adnan.

His case makes it to appeal, and he's acquitted. He meets Sarah on the steps of the courthouse, and she gives him a warm smile, hugging herself in the chilly autumnal Baltimore breeze. He tries to say thank you. "Don't." she says, and he returns her smile--that same, bewitching smile she fell for the very first time she met him. They hug, and she tells him to go live his life. He assures her he will, and is escorted to a waiting vehicle by his councilor.

Sarah watches the car pull away, her smile turning to one of satisfaction at a job well done. Chivvis sidles up alongside her as they watch the car drive away.

"I know where to get a pretty good deal on shrimp..." she offers, with a rueful smile, ever the comic relief. Koenig chuckles, and playfully bumps her elbow into Dana's ribs as Dana wraps her arm around her friend and colleague. The two walk away in their friendly embrace, as the camera lifts over and past them back to the sedan Adnan left in, driving down the grey, otherwise empty street.

Cut to inside the cab. Adnan's head rests on the window. His expression is blank as he watches the multicolored leaves of the passing trees. Slowly, a smile tugs at the corners of his mouth and eyes; there is no mistaking its malevolence.

Cut to black.

In the Prisoners version where Don is a serial killer, Steve Carrell is Don. Mostly Foxcatcher, just a touch of Brick Tamlin.

 

This is very frustrating.

If Don did it, why did Jay get involved?

If Adnan did it, why is Jay's story so worthless and incorrect?

If Ronald is responsible, again, why is Jay lying, and how did he come by the whereabouts of Hae's car?

What about the prosecution?

How's this:

The prosecution sweated Jay to give them a story--any story--and he made something up, poorly, which they edited as necessary (which didn't take much, since there was so little to go on). Jay talked because he was threatened with being put away for what was probably way more time than his petty crimes deserved. Adnan can't recall anything because, probably, he and Jay were getting high. The only questions are, then, how did Jay know where the car was, and why were they so hungry for the conviction? And it still solves nothing, if that is the case.

Except...Jay is the one who contacted the police, right? So...

Cut to thirty something Asian woman driving her sedan. She is clearly harried and distracted by her kids arguing in the back of the car and while on her cell phone.

Cut to inside the cab. Adnan's head rests on the window. His expression is blank as he watches the multicolored leaves of the passing trees. Slowly, a smile tugs at the corners of his mouth and eyes; there is no mistaking its innocence.

Through the window beyond Adnan, we see the sedan heading for the cab at speed, as the driver flies through a missed red light, obviously going to hit right where Adnan is.

Cut to black for five beats.

Music begins playing...probably something by Sarah Machlan.

We see Koenig, still beaming. We see her answer her phone and listening for a few seconds, the smile fading. She collapses to her knees. Next to her, Dana looks on. There is no quip. Not this time.

 

It's pretty obvious that the killer is part of the shadowy criminal masterminds also known as Mail Kimp.
