I would submit that it was never a legitimate possibility.

The "golden age" was spent arguing about lengths of ships.

 

I still say Mace Windu survived the fall on Coruscant and somehow ended up on Sernpidal

 

The beauty of the original theory is that there turned out to be millions of people in the galaxy with Fett's exact biology (and in god knows how many varying states of mental health), so it's actually more easy now than it was in the first place to believe that, genetically speaking, he was Fett.

 

My personal theory is that it was Mace Windu. I mean, Maul survived being cut in half. Can't Mace withstand a little fall?
