I think they got the shorts Oscar acceptably right this year; Curfew was one of the two that I thought deserved to win, the other being Henry (and if I had to pick, I'd have picked Henry)

I kind of wish that that they'd put the shorts online on one site. I didn't get to see any.

That'd be a really good way to increase visibility for that category. You could even make it ad-supported to help allay the hosting costs.

Also, I haven't seen Argo - out of curiosity, did they mention any of Jack Kirby's involvement in that mission?

No they didn't. But it was still awesome.

The Lincoln assassination joke just reminded me of, "That joke was lamer than FDR's legs.... too soon?" :p

Yeah, Kirby showed up about twice, but I forget if they referred to him by name.

I went to one of those big dark rooms where they show moving pictures on the side. Crazy, I know.
Aren't the shorts on iTunes as well? I was pretty sure they WERE available through another means, as they advertise it at the end of each section in theater.

Yeah but I'm poor, I'm not going to spend money on seeing short films. I already have seen hundreds of them and frankly school has made me disinclined to want to see many short films for fun unless I can just watch them at home :p

You can watch them from home for a few bucks. I just checked, and I've got them on demand through comcast, so there's that plus itunes, plus who knows what else (Blockbuster I think has the animated shorts)

I don't even remember what my predictions were :p I just kind of fired off random guesses this year and didn't take the time to look into the shorts of doc categories so.... yeaaaaah. Not winning.

    Mike:

    1) I don't have a TV service.
    2) I hate apple and refuse to give them money.
    3) There's not a single Blockbuster open near me.

But again... I had to watch literally hundreds of short films in 3 years, and I don't like shorts much to begin with so... I'm disinclined to begin with.

So what you're really saying is, I want the ability to watch films and tv without there being any cost to me, because why should I have to pay to watch things?

No. I'm saying that, like it or not, people don't pay to watch short films in the US. It's just not realistic to expect that people are going to pay to see them. And I say this as someone who makes short films.

EDIT: Okay, I know she's lip synching and whatnot, but yay I love Chicago. And Catherine Zeta Jones is looking damn good for 10 years on from Chicago. Aaand now Dreamgirls. Hold on while the musical theatre nerd in me freaks out now :p

No, they said up front that this year's Oscars have a theme of honoring movie music. You can probably blame Les Mis, the most successful stage musical of all time, making it to film finally :p I'm not gonna complain. I'm sure some people will hate it but I freely admit to being a musical nerd.

Lol. Yeah so that was my favorite part. Instead of having patter, can't they just perform Les Mis in between awards? :p

Yeah I feel like they've had to neuter him so much to keep him inoffensive. I don't really blame him. I mean, this audience "oooh'd" at a joke about the Lincoln Assassination  They should have had him singing more. He was much more entertaining then.

And yay Les Mis for sound mixing. Even though I have no idea why there's an award for mixing and an award for editing, I genuinely think Les Mis deserves this award for the fantastic job they did with the live singing. That had to be extremely difficult considering how much ADR is normally done on films even when it's just regular dialogue. Nicely done guys.

    I said music, not auto-tune.
