Chapter 4

A few days after the memorial Wedge and Jesina, acting as XO in Tycho?s absence, were reviewing orders for the Lusankya task force. Tycho had been hiding away in his home the entire time since the service, refusing visitors and only occasionally answering calls. Wedge had been debating whether to take further action, but Jesina had expressed her sincere belief that her childhood friend would come around.

So, here they were ? alone ? looking over plans that made no sense to either of them. They?d been in Wedge?s office but Jesina had grown tired of the close confines and the two were now sitting cross-legged on the floor of the hangar just outside the door, datapads and datacards spread in a haphazard array around them. Wedge looked at his empty mug in annoyance before putting it aside.

Jesina frowned as she looked over the assignment list. ?I get the distinct impression that there?s something they aren?t telling us.?

Wedge heaved a sigh. ?Yeah, I got that feeling as soon as they said they were committing the Lusankya and two Star Destroyers to a diplomatic envoy.?

?Yeah, that sounds like overkill unless we?re escorting Leia,? she murmured, downing the last of her fourth cup of caf and making a face as she swallowed.

Wedge laughed. ?Cold??

She nodded, glaring at the mug as if it had betrayed her. ?Do we even know who we?re escorting??

?No, I?? Wedge began but broke off as he heard footsteps echoing through the hangar. Unbidden, his hand moved to the butt of his blaster, but he released it when he saw who the newcomer was.

Tycho?s face was pale, and his wrinkled civilian clothes did nothing to conceal the fact that he?d lost weight even over the short time since they?d last seen him. His face was unshaven, his hair uncombed, and the haunted look in his eyes chilled Wedge.

Jesina jumped to her feet faster than Wedge would have thought possible given the position she?d been sitting in and helped the shaking man to the nearest seat, a mechanic?s bench. ?Can I get you anything, Tycho?? she asked gently.

He shook his head and fixed his eyes on Wedge. ?You told me when you came over that night that I could come to you, anytime, no matter what.?

Wedge leaned forward, concern written on his face. ?Of course. It?s always been that way.? He had a knot in his stomach that was growing by the second. He?d seen Tycho through a lot in their time flying together, but he couldn?t remember him ever looking so?defeated. Something was very wrong.

?I,? he began, looking pleadingly at Wedge, eyes begging for understanding. ?I need help, and I don?t, I don?t know where else to go.? He drew a deep, ragged breath. ?I almost,? he paused again, shaking even more than before. ?I almost killed myself tonight.?

Wedge?s breath caught in his throat. The possibility had crossed his mind a handful of times over the course of the week but he hadn?t believed ? hadn?t wanted to believe ? that Tycho could be brought to that point. He glanced at Jesina and opened his mouth, but she beat him to it.

?I?ll comm Leia, tell her what?s going on, and ask her to get a message to Winter,? she said quickly. She headed to her own office ? Tycho?s office, normally ? to put a call through to the Solos.

Face walked into the Wraith briefing room on Lusankya and stopped short. All the Wraiths were lined up on their knees at the front of the room ? Kell included. After a moment he asked, ?Begging for watch duty, are we??

Shalla didn?t miss a beat. ?No, Kell told us that Cracken had reduced you to begging on your hands and knees and we wanted to offer our support, show you that we don?t mind that you?ve sunk so low.?

Face arched an eyebrow and looked over at Kell. At least they were in high spirits ? which would probably dissipate when they heard what he had to say. ?Well, I?d like to thank you all for your support and say that, unfortunately, my pleading was unsuccessful. I was unable to convince Cracken that my dear

Um, please hold all comments on my mental capacity at this point, but were the scenes with the Wraiths in the first version? I know I would've remembered them all lined up on their knees making fun of Face.

As Mag said, no, they were not. I'm adding lots of scenes. In fact, all of Chapter 3 was new (did you read/notice that) and Chapter 8 will be brand new too.
Originally, the Wraiths didn't enter the picture until the Rogues left for the mission.

I take it you liked the Wraith scenes? There's more to come, but they won't be as funny, not for a bit anyway. They're about to find out about Tycho...and other important things.

Yeah...looking back on the story and seeing all the stuff that I wrote then (and the stuff I completely ignored and/or forgot about)...the first version was so amateurish.
I also plan to do more with Lara/Kirney

I can't wait to see what else you have changed in this story.
There are a lot of new scenes. The basic plot remains the same, but there will be a lot more exploration of stuff that I either thought of later on in the first writing or stuff in the other stories, specifically Bitter Reunion, that I didn't take into account because I hadn't written that yet.

Expect reviews in your other stories as soon as I get caught up!
Take your time....there're a LOT of posts.
And don't mind the crazy chatting in Bitter Reunion.
