Obi-Wan Kenobi once called the fall of the Republic the 'Dark Times'. Others, after that, said his vision of what constituted the Dark Times was nothing in comparison to what Darth Krayt actually created, over a century thereafter. They would both be wrong. The true Dark Times began sometime after the Yuuzhan Vong War. They didn't occur for the galaxy at large, no. They occurred for the Sith. The dark times for the Sith came about after the Battle of Endor, when the numbers of Dark Jedi were replete, and the opportunities immense. But gradually their numbers dwindled, and their prices were vised from their grasp, leaving but a few dozen Dark Jedi and Sithlings hiding in Imperial and later, after the Bastion Accords, neutral space - until Darth Krayt came. He had a vision of all Sith kneeling to him, and he would brook no alternatives. And so he slowly but surely absorbed smaller groups, isolated more powerful ones, or outright hid behind others, letting the Baneites and the Lost Tribe of the Sith be destroyed so he could take advantage of their leavings, and others, such as the Acolytes of Darkness or Dominion of Darkness were co-opted, infiltrated and final expelled into the Unknown Regions. Some fought him, or sought to infiltrate his One Sith Order, such as the Maleficarum, or the enigmatic Hoole. Some were more ready for this, carving out regimes, such as the Acolytes of Darkness did with the Sith Imperium, but others holed themselves up in fortress worlds and waited, like the Dominion of Darkness. But these Sith were hardly the first darksiders who sought refuge in this region, and they would not be the last, coming across Sith older than the Republic, freshly awoken from their slumber, and the cult known as the Obscurum, which was making its move on the Chiss Ascendancy. They were shortly joined by the Guardians of Light and New Jedi Trials, factions of the broken Jedi Order, when Darth Krayt finally made his successful bid for galactic domination. And now, amongst unknown stars, the Jedi and Sith and Unknown Terrors fight a war, vying for the opportunity to conquer the region and return to Coruscant as conquerers and saviors. That was fifteen years ago, for some of them. Now it is 146 ABY, and the Shadow War is coming to an end. Who will be left standing?
