While the romantic exchange was brief, it's good to know Mara Jade remembers her fling fondly even if her creator would like to bury it.

It's Mara. It was "profitable," because you just know she charged for the "romantic exchange." I'm thinking Lando had a fiver on him, and might've tipped a couple of singles because he's a nice guy.

(You have to have seen O'Toole playing an Errol Flynn-type actor in My Favorite Year to get this. One gets the feeling that the part was not exactly a "stretch" for O'Toole, since his character is staggering drunk for most of the film.)

 

So she actually did spare Lando some grief by lying to Luke and saying nothing happened. I mean, I don't care if he is a farmboy and a Jedi Master, would you want the girl you were trying to get busy with but couldn't complete the encounter telling another guy about his difficulties?

Well, this is easy to see. The profitable part obviously means she made lots of money. What folks are missing on the unsuccessful part is that she couldn't get her hands on all of Lando's holdings or get him to sign an agreement that would promise that no matter what buisness dealings he had in the future she always got a portion of what went his way. That portion being the largest portion no less.

 

Hmm...from what I remember romantic-wise the whole Lando/Mara thing was pretty one-sided. Lando tried to woo Mara, and she pretty much told him that she didn't like him that way. They were able to build a business relationship though...which was the "profitable part."

Mara's one tough nut to crack. Even Talon Karrde knew that despite all his charm, he and Mara would never be anything more than business associates.

Besides, I got the feeling that Mara had eyes for Luke during the whole Sun Crusher crisis, even though she wouldn't admit it.

 

One of the reasons (one of the many, many, many reasons) I hated I, Jedi was that it attempted to do away with one of the few truly amusing and interesting character flourishes that Kevin J. Anderson gave us.

I mean, come on, we all know Lando's a player and Mara's a fairly unscrupled individual. It was totally fun and in character for the two to get into bed with each other.

And then Stackpole, wearing his new hat as "Fixer of all things I don't like," decides he has to come along and try to invalidate it . . . Sheesh . . . can't anybody just have free sex anymore? I mean, these are FICTIONAL characters and we're too uptight to let them have sex . . . what's that about?

 

IIRC, it was Zahn who attempted to retcon it in SotP.

I dopn't find Karrde charming at all. Smarmy comes to mind. Studied shmoozy shtick. It's fine to have friends like that.

Again, so what? Lots of people "have eyes" for someone. Doesn't mean that while they have eyes, they aren't sleeping with someone else. Be realistic. Of course she had boyfriends. She's attractive and rich. She hung around attractive, rich men that were just as shallow as she is. Luke can be jealous all he wants. So can she. Before you get together with someone, what you do is no one else's business.
