Well that's how I felt. Knowing that there's a happy outcome to the sacrifices made the ending bittersweet. I wonder if Disney and the folks behind Lucasfilm are already thinking about re-re-releasing the OT that includes a special ending scene in ANH that honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice to get the Rebellion to that moment. I don't feel as happy watching the celebration scene at the end of ANH after having seen RO.

This thread's been a great read, and I suspect more of these moments will hit me on second viewing.

What got to me the most was the Scarif sequence. There were moments when I got Saving Private Ryan vibes. The appearance of Red Leader and Gold Leader was euphoric, and I wasn't even around in '77.

Once the major deaths began, I was on the verge of tears the rest of the way, especially for Jyn and Cassian. If I remember correctly, Jyn glances up as she starts to move away with Cassian (showing her turn after what she had told Saw). It hit hard there, and right up through their final moments: the act of contributing something and never knowing the result; the likelihood that their names, their very lives, could be largely or entirely forgotten; and just facing a premature death. Yet they still find a sense of peace and resolution. Powerfully bittersweet.

So many moments, I'll be re-watching this movie for years to come. But these are the ones that really stood out to me:

    1. Vader taking out the Rebels ( This shows just how menacing Vader was and why he was feared)
    2. Jyn watching the Holo of her father ( Considering she hasn't seen him in 15 years, I thought Felicity nailed this)
    3. Jyn and Cassian just sitting on the beach knowing they were going to die. They were resolute though, they knew they had accomplished their goal, so they were at peace.

It might be a stretch to get the "Saving Private Ryan" vibes; but I will say that that last scene on Scariff was still pretty upsetting.

Yikes, I didn't realize until now the lack of weighty moments. Despite all the deaths of characters we cared about. In terms of excitement, the Vader scene at the end and the R2D2 cameo.

    Many great sad scenes.

For me the most emotional sad scene was K2SO fending off the stormtroopers and then telling Casian and Jyn to climb and escape. And then he was destroyed.

From then on they started going out/taken out. It was emotional and great.

The scene with Casian and Jyn on the beach kind of reminded me of other movies (Deep Impact for example) where we've been an almost identical death. It was also a mirror/similar to how Saw goes off.

Overall I felt this was way more emotional. The closest in emotion I've gotten are some scenes in ROTS, but the rest of the movie was distracting that somehow they don't have the same impact. Overall, and I know I'm in the minority here, RO is now the best SW film for me.

The Cassian/ Jyn death scene reminded me far more of "Death in Venice" than "Deep Impact."

Considering RO the best Star Wars film may be a minority position, but it's not that small of a minority - even here. For me, it's locked itself in as the best, just edging out ESB and ANH.

I didn't mean the level of intensity, certainly not the gore, but a general feel -- the blocking and the several major deaths in a climactic sequence. Not the best comparison, but I haven't seen many war films.

I wasn't talking about the intensity either. This thread is about the emotional moments. The last scene on Scariff was pretty sad; after having built up the characters. I was relating it to a particular scene in SPR, the one where the mother is told that three of her four sons were killed in action.

The most emotion I felt was severe anger for those few seconds I thought the AT-ACTs were AT-ATs and were being taken down with relative ease. Once I realized the difference, everything was ok. But wow those were an infuriating few seconds.

There's so much that has already been said on here that I absolutely 100% agree with in regards to the emotions Rogue One brought out of me when I watched the movie. I will say that for me, the one thing Rogue One did, is make me realize just how hard that struggle was against the Empire and how the events of the OT are suddenly far more impactful and meaningful knowing what a price was paid for that freedom. When the Rebel Alliance is celebrating on Endor and across the galaxy there will be a heavier and more realistic sense of the challenges and difficulties our characters we enjoy so much took to throw off the yoke of the Empire.

Rogue One took me to a time where you really felt, as an audience member, under the hard boot of the Empire. The Jedi are gone. Jedha and other worlds are ruthlessly occupied. Imperial soldiers search and arrest those who are in their way or simply at the wrong place at the wrong time. Hope is gone. The Rebel Alliance is far from united and even the Imperial forces are sniping one another to gain favor with Palpatine and Vader. I enjoyed every minute of the film. It made ANH better and honestly from this point forward the story of ANH is now a four hour long epic. You start with RO, you move to ANH.

    Seamless. Beautiful.

    After all there's always "Hope".

AT ATs can be taken down with ordinary fire, the snowspeeders just weren't well equipped enough and the X-wings were busy escorting the transports out of the Hoth system.

I got tears when I first saw Leia revealed, or maybe right before as everything was really coming together. It's the nostalgia of it all. Then the second time, after Carrie Fisher passed, it felt even more poignant.

I was under the impression the AT-ATs on Hoth were specially armored, "too strong for blasters." Luke seemed to learn after their first attack on them.

It's still Jyn and Cassian on the beach for me.

Jyn, who spent her adult life avoiding the cause ("It's not a problem if you don't look up"), staring down the incoming blast unblinking and unflinching. Whereas Cassian, who's been bleeding and killing for the Rebellion for twenty years ("I've been in this fight since I was six years old"/"We don't all have the luxury to decide when and where we want to care about something") is turned away from it, eyes closed, tucked into her shoulder like he's finally allowing himself to relax, to take comfort, to not deal with it.

Argh. It makes me tear up every time.

Baze's and Chirrut's compassion towards Jyn, and growing respect for her, was done with a very light touch, to be sure. But it was there, during a number of scenes, esp. the ones on the U-Wing. And then Jyn was there when their home was destroyed, so that was experienced together (and I assume Baze and Chirrut may have lost family and friends in that event). In that context, I found it touching that the big, hulking Baze would consider her as a family member. A little sister. And as he says it, I got the distinct impression from Wen's acting that he knew she would likely die on the mission, and that this was the last time they would see each other. I just liked the subtle way characters were dealt with in RO. None of the standard overwrought character development 101 we often get from genre films.

That said, I find stories about the creation of non-traditional families to often be touching. So this may be a bias of mine.
