Hm, so Leia's playing innocent, huh?

Poor Mara, I really feel for her here. What a horrible position to be in, not only with Luke so badly injured, but having to deal with Leia and Han as well.

You really know how to do the angst thing. Looking forward to reading more!

I wonder what will happen when Mara actually gets to see Luke. Hopefully he can make a speedy recovery but it sounds like there's a lot wrong with him... And now I'm all worried about Artoo! -- Artoo might have an easier time recovering than his master.


Jade_eyes: I'm glad Han took up for Mara so she could wait with them. I feel for her not being able to unload the full extent of her worry and anxiety, though of course she still might not choose to, if given the chance. -- Han's pretty perceptive, but then, Mara's pretty secretive. Luke had better recover fast so he can get things out in the open.

Very moving part about the things that might be shattered--chances for a happy future. -- Ah, someone noticed what the title referred to.


RedGold: You'll find out a little more about Luke's fate in this next post. But mind you, just a little.


smiley_rancor: Wonder whether it was just a crash or something much more sinister? -- Just a crash. My plots are about as complicated as I am. LOL!


Darth_Marrs: I like the dynamic you've created between Leia and Mara. They're not bonding, they're just co-existing at this stage. -- Yep, you've nailed it. Remember, it was only one book ago (SotP) that Leia met Mara on Wayland and had her doubts about being able to trust her.


Blue_Milkshake: Jinkies! I've been worrying about Artoo for weeks now. I sure hope he's okay. -- Do they make bacta for droids? And I'm sure Threepio would be more than willing to donate any parts needed.


VaderLVR64: That's our Mara! -- Mara's not about to let a little thing like a droid guard keep her from her true love!



verybusy: I guess I am too weird, right now I should be scared about Luke, shouldn't I? ...but I am rather looking forward to more "conversations" between Leia and Mara here..... -- It'll be awhile before Leia or Mara feel like conversing with each other. But don't expect them to become best buds over this, either.


cupid7: Liked the Mara?Leia interaction. You established Leia?s mild distrust and disregard for Mara in a few well chosen words. -- See my answer to Darth_Marrs above as to my influence on how I think Mara & Leia would interact at this point.

And the word ?holoshills?. Is that general SWFF-speak, or did you think of that? -- I'm sure I've heard it before, but don't remember if it was in fanfics or pro-fic.

 

Yes, once again a slightly early post. Schedules, smedules.

This is a little longer post than others. So I didn't have room to squeeze in the scene where Wes Janson consoles Mara in the waiting room. You all will just have to imagine that union for yourselves.

Chapter Four

Hours stretched into half a standard day, and Luke hadn't yet come out of surgery. Even the medical droids began avoiding the waiting room after Han ambushed the tenth employee passing by, badgering him for any information regarding Luke's condition. No one could tell them anything other than multiple injuries meant multiple surgical procedures. Three teams of specialists had rotated in and out of the operating theater.

Mara stayed huddled in 'her corner,' watching the sun go down, the city's lights flicker on, the rain beat against the window, the rain stop, and the sun come up.

And still Luke lay on an operating table.

As the hours wore on, the waiting area began to swell with visitors. Winter held Leia's hand as Han paced back and forth in helpless frustration. Wedge Antilles and Tycho Celchu talked quietly in a corner. Lando kept excusing himself to answer comm calls. Bibberry muffins brought by Iella sat untouched on the room's low table, though the caf maker was working overtime. It seemed everyone was straggling back to Coruscant about the same time, each of them offering words of comfort to Leia. No one tried to comfort Mara, for which she was thankful. Faughn had commed the first hour, asking if Mara needed anything, and to say that Karrde would be returning in two days. But he could come sooner if Mara wanted. She declined.

President Gavrisom had made an appearance, talked to Han and Leia quietly, then retreated to his office. Something was up, Mara could tell. Something political. But she didn't think it directly involved her or Luke, so it didn't matter.

Han had succeeded in finding Artoo-Detoo at the crash site. Or at least, what was left of him. The droid's outer casing was beyond recognition, but he could be rebuilt. Most importantly, his memory bank was intact. The New Republic's best technicians were already working on the astromech, and had reported that they were confident that the Caamasi Document could be saved.

Mara had this insane notion that Luke cushioned Artoo's fall, more concerned over his metal friend than his own safety. Or maybe not so insane. It was the kind of thing Luke would do.

She overheard Han describing the crash site to Lando, making sure he was out of Leia's hearing. Horrific ? Nothing but a pile of twisted metal ? Don't know how the kid survived ?

Shifting slightly, Mara dug her fingernails into the palms of her hands to keep from crying. It had been barely a week ago that her heart had felt torn in two, when she'd feared that Luke had been killed by the Chiss. Later, she'd learned that Luke had had a near-meltdown when her Force presence had suddenly disappeared. Now she was once again filled with anxiety-riddled pain. Was this some wicked byproduct of loving someone? If so, she could better understand Luke's initial reluctance to let himself love her.

Mara forced her thoughts toward the beautiful, warm feelings that Luke invoked in her. There was no doubt in her mind - their love was worth any heartache that life could throw at them.

She only hoped that life would give them the chance.

Anxious faces all turned one direction as Dr. Panio entered the somber room. "Councilor," the tall Chandrillan medic began before glancing at the large group. "Perhaps we should go into my office."

"Everyone here is a good friend of Luke's." Leia's red-rimmed eyes swept the room, pausing briefly on Mara before turning back to the doctor. "Please, tell us his condition."

The doctor nodded, leading Leia back to her seat on the couch. "Master Skywalker's injuries were extremely severe?"

Leia gave a small gasp, bracing herself for unwanted news.

"? but he came through the surg

Poor Mara. She has to steal ID to see Luke. At least she gets to be an official visitor now.

I can't wait for the awakening.

The whole story has been great,but I have to agree that this was the best post so far. I really can't wait for more.

Poor Luke. I'm glad he's expected to be okay though. I'm glad Leia and Han finally got to see him, and Mara sneaking in was perfect.

I do like that Mara has maintained appearances as his best friend. And I loved the part where she wondered why him and not someone else -- and then her shame at the thought. Han and Leia are beautifully characterized, too! Awesome job!

With Han, you have to wonder if they're avoiding because the ambush involved his DL-44.

Yeah, I can picture that easily. Luke is probably the most selfless character in Star Wars.

It's too bad Mara can't tell them about her engagement to Luke so she can visit him

Mara's eyes narrowed as a white-clothed technician strode out of the ward, her identification badge swinging on an orange lanyard. She casually followed the young Ishi Tib toward a nearby employee locker room. Thank the Force, there was no droid monitoring the door. Slipping in unseen, she plucked a clean uniform tunic from a stack of laundry. Now all she needed was one of those I.D. tags.

I forgot, this is Mara. She doesn't have to tell anyone anything, she can just do what she wants

That was nice of Dr. Paino to put her on the allowed list.

Great post, Jedi-2B Very emotional, especially the scene with Mara seeing Luke for the first time You really did a great job describing her feelings, and I particularly liked the way Mara starts theorizing about the crash, wondering about what Luke might have done. Also loved the way she sneaked into the med room

Can't wait for the next post so we can find out some more

For a minute there, I thought you might put Luke into a Vader suit or some such terrible condition. But no, it sounds as if the physical damage will be overcome - so now it's a question of the effect on his mind. I notice that there was no mention of brain damage or other psychological concerns in his prognosis...

 

He's going to be okay!!

Was touched by the crowd of friends in the waiting area giving moral support Can totally sympathize with Leia and Han wanting to be assuring to the kids, while also worrying to death. Mara "borrowing the ID"
Total Aw-ness moment:

Shaking her head wearily, Mara tried to clear her muddled mind. It didn't matter how the crash happened. She could quiz Luke after he recovered, after she
hugged him, and kissed him, and scolded him for scaring her half to death. Right now she just wanted to be with him, sending him Force energy for healing,
and sharing with him the warmth of her love.

Mara brought her fingertips to her lips, then pressed them against the cold smooth surface of the tank. "I love you, Luke," she whispered.

Thanks for proving that drama/angst can be mushy.

She spent the night slumped in one of the visitors' conform-chairs, slipping out when she felt Han and Leia arrive at the medcenter the next morning.
It was a pattern she would repeat for the next five nights.

I hope Mara is taking care of herself during all this. Talon will make sure she's okay.

 

I agree completely, perfect Mush Moment based an drama/angst.

I just love the way you write Mara here, so perfectly in character, but the feelings I expected her to have for Luke at the end of VotF coming through perfectly. This is just a scene that could make me cry....

Finally had a chance to get online! Wonderful post, as always. Poor Mara.... being Luke's fiancee, and not being able to see him. - She needs to confide in someone on the inside to Luke's family circle. I vote for.....

And it's now time for Wes to sneak into the hospital room and sabotage Luke's bacta tank, so he can at last have Mara's love as she rebounds!!! I just love insane plot bunnies, don't you?

 

Heart wrenching chapter, gal! You amaze me with being able to write humor, and romance, and angst--all all with ease. Poor Mara, not being able (or not being willing) to disclose her true relationship with Luke. At least that doctor was able to get her on the list allowed in to see him. And poor Luke. Sounds like a long, long recovery period is ahead. Great update!
