Shield Generator around Hoth...

Gotta question about the Hoth shield generator. General Veers states that the shield is strong enough to deflect any bombardment, so Vader orders a surface attack. But how could the transports that took the walkers and troopers down to Hoth make it past the planetary shield?

 

It's not a planetary shield. The shield only covers the Rebel base. Planetary shields take up much too much power for a puny Rebel Alliance to generate.

And, at any rate, Hoth wouldn't have a planetary shield. It's too unimportant.

It's just a shield around the base. A planetary shield would be much larger than what we saw in the film; the one for the Death Star II was huge, and I doubt it was as big as Hoth.

I could be wrong; but I don't think that was said. Please correct me if my memory is bad.

 

You might be right. Now I remember someone saying something about beyond or outside the shield. Could be Vader, could be another film. I'm tired, leave me alone.

 

I think they had to open the shield so the transports could out, then so the ion cannons could work.

 

I'm 99 percent sure the shield was just an air shield around the base, hence the imperials marching in from the 5 marker (I think it was the 5th). Then veers destroyed the shield allowing the forces to drop right on the base.

My guess: The field's strength near the ground was lower, so AT-ATs would be able to walk through it - like the battle droids did with the Gungan shield in TPM.

that's one of my fave lines by the way

 

They landed at the edge of the shield, then marched in.
