I can write, but I don't know what you have in mind. Are you thinking of a fanfilm or something original?

hey this is great...two interested parties! i wasnt thinking anything specific at this point...fanfilm, original...either way. at this pont i think we need a minimum of six people to get things moving. then we can start throwing ideas around and work from there.

what sort of writing have you done?

Nothing professional, but it's a hobby of mine and I do run a lot of RPG's and have recently taken up proposal writing for a charity where I live.

    I've been told I'm good.

If you want to see a sample I can send you a script for a fanfilm I wrote a few years ago.

If you're interested in film as a hobby and would like to eventually pursue it as a career, in whatever speciality that may be, Facebook networks are a great way to meet people in the Edmonton film community. There is a core network of folks in town who are primarily involved in anything that is ever shot or produced here. Many of the veteran pros have worked on almost every major studio film that has brought a project here to shoot scenes.

We all pretty much help each other out on our private projects in whatever capacity we can whenever we have the available time. This is probably going to be your best shot at getting a crew together that has the experience and the knowledge to offer you sound advice on how to plan and carry out such a task. They are also terrific contacts to have when you need to put something together for low - no budget. I'm convinced Secrets of the Rebellion wouldn't have half the visual range it does now without guys like David Puff and Brett Manyluk.

Search "Edmonton Film" on Facebook and you'll see what I mean. There's probably more acting talent in there tha production people but there ought to be more than enough to get started on a basic no budget short if that's what you're thinking of doing.

heya AOE thanks for the info. im connected in those circles a bit and doing what i can to further then. i was just hoping to get a sci fi project together. ive noticed most 'regular' filmmakers arent that juiced about doing scifi so i went to the source! plus i thought i would connect with like minded folks to see where things might go. id rather not try and do a one man show.

I'll be the first one to say doing sci-fi is a huge pain in the ass for your first project. It can be viable because it's simple to do with limited locations and a lot of people will jump on the band wagon for no pay but the sheer amount of effects work is pretty daunting and can hold the production up from finishing for a long time. There's a huge difference between running around with a camera and some friends shooting things for kicks and organizing a full blown film production with full staff, logistics management and a production schedule. At some point it changes over from one person organizing the whole show to requiring teams of people to put it together. How involved it gets will depend on what type of scale you want it to reach.

okay folks, im looking at starting two groups.

the first would be for the short film so that people have a place to banter ideas, keep up with its progress and general chat regarding the (when it happens) project.i have had enough interest to start this up so its time to work on making it happen.

the second is for those interested in screenwriting. one of the biggest problems with getting projects off the ground is the lack of scripts! i was thinking of copying a formula a friend of mine is using in australia. he started a group that meets up every two weeks or so. before each meeting everybody gets a copy of what people are working on. they then do a round table critique on everybodys piece of work. it can be pretty gutwrenching to hear people talking about your work but people have found they gain a lot of insight from the meetings and peoples writing has improved greatly.

so for those interested parties in either group please email me direct at excit97@hotmail.com

im hoping to get a response!

Writing workshops are not only a whole helluva lot of fun but can be extremely productive. You have to be careful about the number of people involved though. Too many cooks can spoil the stew and it gets harder and harder to streamline ideas or stay on track with too many perspectives.

That being said it's been my experience that 3 people is the prime number of writers to have working on any given project. It provides multiple perspectives, a fresh pool of ideas and doesn't overcrowd.

Our group always meets at the same place every time (2nd Cup on 112 st, Jasper ave) whenever we want to work on a project.

For example, when it came time to write "Day Players", Stephen, Nathan and I all got together, pounded out a basic plot line in two meetings and then I was able to write most of the script with the two of them contributing here and there to solve problems, add dialogue etc.

I've found that us three seem to have comedy come to us very naturally. Day Players looks very realistically like it will be full financed and rolling into production within 6 months give or take.

The next time around, Fearless Fred Kennedy, Nathan and I got together to work on a concept Fred has always wanted to develop about a small town radio station threatened with being bought out by an unfeeling corporate media conglomerate. His 10 years in radio and extensive notes gave us a huge head start on that one but bringing everybody together for the plot breakdown process was very helpful.

And then most recently, Stephen, Nathan and I reformed again to pound out S.W.A.T (Super Wicked Awesome Team) which I am going to personally exec produce with some of the profits I pull in from my Day Players pre-sales.

Making the first meeting dedicated to just working out the central plot line from beginning to finish and doing it with people you gell creatively with are the keys to successful writing. By doing this I've found that we were able to write material with far more impact, originality and marketable viability than anything I've had submitted to me from external sources over the past 2 years.

I don;t know what it is but it seems anyone thinks he can be a writer if he picks up a book on it and follows a formula. Hollywood may prefer formulaic structure but you still have to be a talented writer to make the film something that stands out to producers and to an audience.

I'm certain now that writing for the screen is 75% natural talent and 25% honing ones skills through education, research and creative collaboration. Get 3 talented creative people together to work together toward a common goal and you'll strike gold without having to pay an option fee for it.
